This is an SATB arrangement but you can drop out the tenor line and the three part arrangements will work with just about any combination of parts. I have tried to keep it as simple as possible, although the F major chord just before the end of the chorus does make the chord progression a bit tricky! It's a well-known song though, so shouldn't need too much work to get it down.There are no minimum order quantities on this piece as I arrange all my songs to be taught by ear.

I remember hearing it all over the radio when The Zutons released it in 2006. Little did I (or they) know how huge it would become just a year later when Mark Ronson teamed up with British soul superwoman Amy Whinehouse and recorded it for his collaborative covers album Version. This SATB arrangement is an easy win, with simple repetitive choruses and a good dollop of unison to keep the choir happy. It's not without its quirks though - the third verse includes a few scrunchy oohs and aahs and the harmonies have stayed true to the song's jazz/soul influences. Piano accompaniment included.

This arrangement is for four voices with piano accompaniment.Piano is a part of an act, starting too loudly and ‘shushed’ by four cats in bar two who are satisfied in bar 3 with mp playing. Bar 4 of the piano accompaniment adds an extra note to please all four cats. Please treat this music like a dialogue of four characters with the high authority from the bass line. The discussion turns to perfect harmony in bar 34 (Andantino) to move to dialogue between three voices against the soprano cat which wants to show of with the final cadence. This could be treated accordingly to soprano’s range and imagination. The given ending is only a suggestion. It can easily end on top ‘C’ or 'F'. The most important is the accuracy and security of each voice. They need to reflect the spirit of the characters. It is interesting how one simple miau can make this music so expressive. It is fun to sing and a treat to listen to. This is a very good choice for a light-hearted number for any concert, from an opera to recital. Four single voices could be doubled if once prefers. It could be challenging for the choir to keep the tight accuracy of each line but not impossible. Definitely a good choice for four secure voices who are eager to entertain.

Finding a balance between the comfort of traditional hymn voicings and contemporary jazz inspired harmonic movement- this arrangement keeps things fresh, while also embracing the simple beauty of the melody we all know and love. It honors the folk tune feel, but with subtle modern flavor. It is a challenge to sing at some points, but is bookended by satisfyingly lush, and intuitive, full voicings. Though it is not an easy arrangement, it is written with achievability in mind. I urge you to let your ensemble give it a try. I hope you find the joy in singing it that I had in writing it.

The first two exercises of each time signature have no ties while the remaining two exercises in each time signature include ties. In Book 1 of this series you’ll find difficulty levels 1 to 5, while Book 2 completes the set with levels 6 to 10. The exercises in this collection are intentionally random and difficult to internalize. They don’t follow any predictable or standard groove pattern, but instead are random successions of eighth- and sixteenth-note groupings within the prescribed difficulty level. In keeping the rhythmic material as unpredictable as possible the door is left open for the materials to be used in conjunction with any number of exercises, while forcing the user to process every rhythm as its own event without relying on pattern recognition to help in identifying the rhythms. To curate the difficulty of rhythm in as objective a way as possible I looked at all of the possible eighth-note and sixteenth-note groupings within the basic unit of one beat. Each difficulty level builds on the exercises of the previous by adding groupings that are slightly more conceptually challenging. Difficulty Level 9 contains all possible groupings, while Level 10 focuses on the more challenging groupings by omitting easy ones. Some suggestions for how to use this book include: Practice sight-reading. When doing so it is encouraged to cycle through the exercises quickly rather than dwelling on a particular exercise for a long period of time. The goal in practising sight-reading is not to learn the material but to develop the skill of reading new material. Use a metronome! The most important thing you can do with this material is learn how to read these rhythms and play them in time. Advanced metronome work: Place the metronome click on weak beats. With the metronome clicking only on the beat you run the risk of relying on the metronome to give you the time. Placing the metronome click on non-strong beats forces you to take responsibility for the time. For example, instead of putting the metronome click on each quarter-note in 4/4, play the exercise with the metronome giving the second eighth note of each beat, or the last sixteenth note, or beats 2 and 4, or only the downbeat of each bar. Be creative with this one! The possibilities are limitless. Develop independence between hands by playing a repeating pattern in one hand while reading an exercise in the other. Expand on this by adding patterns in hands and feet while reading a rhythm with a remaining limb. This is a great exercise for drummers and percussionists but any instrumentalist could benefit from coordination practice. Use these rhythms to practice scales. Instead of playing scales in straight sixteenth-notes, try playing them in the rhythms given in these exercises. Write in sticking patterns, dynamics, accents, phrase marks, or other articulations for you or your students to practice. If you’re not happy with the ties I included, feel free to add some of your own. Combine the above exercises in any way that you think will be beneficial to your practice. As with any of the Dots and Beams books, the uses for this particular collection are limited only by the imagination of the musician using it. An SSAB bossa nova arrangement for an advanced high school vocal jazz ensemble. Opens with a rubato a capella section, before settling into a relaxed groove with some textural variety in the vocals. The piano part is rhythmically straightforward, and the vocals range between simpler sections and flashier moments (with brief baritone splits) to impress the audience and challenge the students. The range is less ambitious than some high school arrangements, keeping the sopranos to E4 and lower, and allowing basses to split down if asked to go above a D4. Please enjoy it as a change of pace from the usual high school repertoire! And yes, that is my last name.
