Program note — Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble for its February 2023 Planet Home concert, Extinction sets the poem “An Extinction†(2022) by Kim Stafford for SATB mixed chorus. The three stanzas of the poem get distinct musical treatment: the first some text-painting and dissonance, the second rhythmic parts underpinning canonic melodic lines, the third a rich chorale. During my work on this piece, I happened to be traveling by train. The pitches of the train whistle snuck their way into the score as a dissonant chord. A nature soundscape may sometimes accompany this piece, although the tongue click sounds create a bit of their own aural ecosystem. Drawing attention to the unfolding catastrophe of mass extinction, Extinction hopes to inspire humans to action to prevent further loss of species biodiversity.

English.My dear colleague, the renowned low flute player Peter Sheridan, lost his mother, Pauline, in 2014. One of my best friends, the very talented artist Malcolm Tuffnell, lost his mother, Jacqueline, in 2010. One night, Malcolm posted some of his late mother's poetry on a social networking site. I was so moved by the ones I saw that I immediately asked to see more of them. I narrowed down my choices to eight sea-themed poems that became the basis for Seascapes. First performance March, 2023 by Schola Cantorum of Silicon Valley.One morning in early 2022, after having somewhat unexpectedly lost my two aunts and one of my best friends in the world over the previous year or so, I woke up and this piece, along with some tears, poured out in about 15 minutes. For Us the Living contains echoes of Brahms' German Requiem (Denn alles Fleisch ist wie Gras), Shawn Kirchner's Cornerstone, and Dolly Parton's Light of a Clear Blue Morning (another a song about loss). The words are partly based on a short poem I wrote after my father passed away. I ended to him, Go to sleep, rest a while. So, perhaps obviously, the piece is like a lullaby. What I'm saying is that the purpose of mourning is first to comfort the survivors, and a call to take care of each other -- but also to not just wait for salvation, but to use the memory of our loved ones, to be inspired to pick ourselves up and make ourselves useful while we're on this Earth.Â

Across the Borders - in memory of those who lost their lives to Covid-19Across the Borders is an original song for SATB and piano by singers of Felixstowe Harmonies and their Musical Director, Chandra Grover. The project was inspired by the thoughts and feelings of the singers who collaborated on the lyrics while in isolation during the Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020. Their Musical Director set these lyrics to music. The verses are ballad style with lyrics reflecting the feelings of loneliness, heartache and of those we knew. The chorus has a strong and uplifting message of solidarity, of friends uniting and how singing lifts the hearts across the borders of our world.The YouTube link is
