Amen. - St. Francis of Assisi's Prayer before the Crucifix NOTES from the composer: One year ago, I had the privilege of participating in the Leadership Pilgrimage to Assisi and Rome (2011) sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, Franciscan Healthcare, and Viterbo University. I carried with me, not only the responsibility of bringing back a hint of Francis’ lived experience to my students, but the desire to compose something wholly Franciscan. The San Damiano Cross is one of the most distinctive Franciscan images we have on campus. The gentle Jesus that hangs on this 12th-century icon will forever be linked to Francis’ dramatic step from citizen to sainthood-welcoming his earnest prayer to enlighten the darkness of his heart. The Basilica of Santa Chiara in Assisi holds both the San Damiano Cross and the remains of his confidante, St. Clare. It seemed a good place to start getting serious. Copying the prayer in at least six different languages, I tucked it away in my travel books, not digging it out again until the following summer (2012). The opening phrases in the piece came easily enough (Altissimo, glorioso Dio), but I stumbled through a handful of ideas before coming up with the mantra (illumine le tenebre…). It made sense that Francis would joyfully address God singing forte (Altissimo and Signore), while quietly chanting his humble prayers for faith, hope, charity, and knowledge. The friendship between Francis and Clare can’t be missed, not only in the intermingling of SATB voices, but in the setting of che faccia lo tuo santo e verace comadamento (that I may carry out your holy and true command). The phrase is sung only once by the women before the final return of the illumine chant (which is repeated throughout by the men). Maybe I chanced on weaving some of Clare’s courage with Francis’ persistence into Illumina le tenebre, all while trying to compose something wholly Franciscan?  ---Mary Ellen Haupert, October 2012. Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.924875). Composed in 1906, the secular art song Nebbie (Mists) by Ottorino Respighi (1879–1936) is a setting of poem by Ada Negri (1870–1945). I have been drawn to this song ever since studying voice at The Boston Conservatory. The words focus on loneliness and the darker aspects of nature, and the music is appropriately fatalistic-sounding in response. The deceptively simple-sounding scaler motion of chords in the piano combined with the melodic line that mirrors that motion but adds dramatic intervallic leaps, results in a very dramatic song. The addition of choral lines here enhances the drama inherent in the harmonies. This is a great choice for choir directors seeking a different kind of challenge for their groups. It can even be used in Halloween programs. Italian and English.

UPC: 000308060669.Remembering the events of Jesus' last hours leading up to his crucifixion and death is one of the extraordinary opportunities Christians have during Holy Week. This service of worship dramatizes the events and recaptures those solemn and sacred moments. The Canonical Hours of Matins and Lauds, recited and sung on the evenings of the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before Easter Sunday, is called the 'Tenebrae,' which means 'darkness' or 'shadows.' It is named for the practice of extinguishingall but one of the prepared candles in the worship space during the course of the service. Mr. Wagner's service of Tenebrae focuses on seven episodes in the Passion and Death of Our Lord, and his choral music, all original, is passionate, dynamic and devotional. In addition, he has arranged his choral accompaniment for either keyboard or string ensemble. The piece opens with a constantly descending scale as a mother sings to her sleeping child. As more voices are layered in, the texture becomes increasingly lush, but still soothing. The third stanza of text is marked with peaceful harp-like figures (as thy softest limbs I feel) while the voices take over the calming decent into deeper, more peaceful sleep. The mother’s concern suddenly changes as the descending scale transforms and (the cunning wiles that creep) set in. Anticipation of escaping the terror of potential nightmares escalates as the ascending textures grow more tense and dissonant. The tension finally peaks with a breathless silence before resolving with (then the dreadful night shall break). The final phrase of the piece is a slightly transformed iteration of the opening vocal phrase and is a subtle nod to Johannes Brahms’ Wiegenlied: Guten Abend, Gute Nacht, more commonly known as Brahms’ Lullaby.Cradle Song was commissioned by Rincon/University High School Concert Choir in Tucson, Arizona; Directed by Mareena Boosamra.www.RRonnebaum.com

Daneben hat er aber immer auch Kammermusik und Vokalmusik komponiert, wobei die Chormusik einen besonderen Stellenwert hat.
