Perhaps the most often-sung processional hymn on Palm Sunday, “Ride On, Ride On in Majesty†was written in 1820 by Anglican cleric, poet, and scholar Henry Hart Milman (1791-1868) and first  published in Reginald Heber’s Hymns Written and Adapted to the Weekly Church Service of the Year (1827). The hymn references Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem prior to his Passion, as recorded in Matthew 21:1-11.Writing for the Hymnology Archive of The Hymn Society in the US and Canada, editor Chris Fenner notes in his analysis of the text that:“This hymn ... is much less a narrative or paraphrase of the triumphal entry (Matt. 21, Mk. 11, Lk. 19, Jn. 12) than it is a forward-looking hymn pointing from the palms to the cross to [Jesus’] ascended position on the throne. The triumphal entry itself is a fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 (‘Behold, your king is coming to you . . . humble and mounted on a donkey’). The recurring opening line is possibly an allusion to Psalm 45:4 (‘in thy majesty ride prosperously’). “Some hymnological commentators connect this hymn with the idea of the great reversal in Philippians 2:5-12, where we find the Christ who humbled himself in a crucified death, later to be exalted, name above all names, to which every knee will bow. As Canadian hymn scholar Stanley Osborne observed, this hymn’s poetic strength is in its exploration of that duality:'Objective, robust, confident, and stirring, it possesses that peculiar combination of tragedy and victory which draws the singer into the very centre of the drama. All rights reserved.Composed by Adrienne Inglis in 2014 and premiered in 2014 in Austin, Texas, by the Westminster Presbyterian Church Sanctuary Choir, In Heaven and on Earth for SATB chorus, flute, and clà rsach, draws inspiration from the tune Love is the Cause of my Mourning from The Caledonian Pocket Companion Book 1, p. 27. The piece opens with the tune altered to G mixolydian mode. As the word exploited appears, a sinister-sounding E flat enters the harmony. Open octaves between soprano and bass show the emptying, followed by a shift to E phrygian mode with the word slave. Several dissonances emerge as the narrative gets darker. The flute and clà rsach represent chaos or hell with an aleatoric interlude of extended techniques involving tongue rams, flutter tonguing, multiphonics, spoken syllables, and lever glissandi. The harp then joyfully proclaims the new tonality of G major in a fanfare to introduce the text of praise and exaltation. The original source tune returns harmonically restored to G major.

In chapter two of Paul's letter to the Philippians, Paul begins speaking to his readers about encouragement, comfort from love, participation in the Spirit, and godly affection and sympathy for one another. He says, we are to count others as more important than ourselves. He pleads, Complete my joy by doing these things. From this point, Paul breaks immediately into this other known 1st century Hymn to Christ (Verses 5-11), which I have called, The Great Humility of Christ. The hymn text is a beautiful exposition of the Gospel; Christ in the form of God, did not hold onto (grasp) His equality with God, but humbled Himself and took on the human form of a servant (slave) and poured Himself out for all of mankind. The anthem is composed for SATB (a cappella) choir in two stanzas, with a bridge section and a coda. The piece is scored in D minor, but weaves between D minor and G Major (representing the dual natures of Christ-fully God and fully man). After the first stanza, regarding Christ’s taking on human flesh, the unthinkable happens; Christ humbles Himself in holy obedience to be put to death, even a humiliating and repugnant death on a cross. Here in the anthem we find the musical bridge between the two stanzas with the sopranos holding onto a single note (high D) followed by a cascade of dissonant suspensions, one voice handing off to the other, finally resolving in a descending scale.The second stanza declares God’s having exalted Christ as a consequence of His sacrifice, giving Him a name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. The final coda (in G Major) trumpets the pronouncement that; Every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of the Father.

Written for SATB choir with a version for small orchestra, and one for organ, it provides a very interesting and modern setting for a special Christmas performance. Both versions feature the harp. Both versions also include a “vocal rehearsal piano score†which may be copied for your choir members to facilitate rehearsal. This organ version includes a score, organ only part, and harp part as well as the vocal rehearsal score. I couldn't get the organ sound on the computer rendered mp3 to my liking. You may want to listen to the mp3 of the orchestra version (available elsewhere on this site) to get a better idea of the sound. Obviously an organist will make a suitable registration for performance.

I Can Not Say the Sad Good-Bye was one of her notable songs published in 1873. She was both influenced and encouraged by Ella Wheeler Wilcox who she attributed her success to. Her most popular poetry volume entitled Love or Fame and Other Poems was published in 1880 by W.S Bryan of St Louis and she continued writing for many years. ON THE LAKE There's a beautiful lake where the sun lies low, And the skies are warm with their summer glow; And a beautiful picture there I see Where the winds are warm and the waves are free, And the waves lie still in the sun As the flowers at night, when the day is done. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844381). For this Christmas here is a dramatic a capella piece that is a Fantasia based on the old English carol God Rest You Merry Gentlemen. It is an eclectic fusion of Classical music and 1950's Free Jazz and West Indian/Caribbean rhythms with exuberance and pulse. It is in verse-refrain form, but is very freely treated and each of the four verses is wholly unique while expressing, and sometimes expanding upon, each word. There is no Time Signature and thus irregular measures which change every few bars which would utilize 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 7/4, but always maintains a strong pulse. It contains abrupt changes in dynamics and a rubato tempo. This is a challenging work with dynamic results.8 pages (I have only printed the refrain once (after the first verse) and it is repeated the same after every verse. If I inserted it after each verse this would have been a 19 page score to print. Best to just memorize the short catchy refrain.)4:45 minutesI originally wrote this as an a capella piece. Years later I also transcribed it for Instrumental Quartet. If you do not wish to do this piece a capella there are 15 different Instrument Quartet combinations also published on this site which double the four voice parts and are all in the same concert key and can be used as accompaniment. Â The recording attached is of the Brass Quartet version which exactly doubles the SATB voices so that you can get an idea of the rhythms and harmonies. Â
