Frost referred to the poem as his “best bid for remembrance.†It was published, along with other celebrated poems, including “Fire and Ice†and “Nothing Gold Can Stay,†in his collection “New Hampshire†in 1923. I intended the slow repeating tone cluster chords in the last section as a solemn meditation on death. It's great for: - Church Services - Missionary Farewells and Homecomings - Firesides - Youth Choirs - Adult Choirs - Soprano and Tenor Duet Purpose/Message: The medley's purpose is to invigorate us and to encourage us to be brave in sharing truth. It emphasizes the concepts of pressing on, having courage, and not fearing. Difficulty: Medium (There are some independent singing sections, some notes at the top of the soprano and tenor range, and a couple spots with less typical harmonies. It is, however, not a difficult piece overall. Those who are accustomed to singing in choirs will have no trouble but will be challenged enough to enjoy the piece.) Range: The notes are within range for a somewhat experienced or serious singer. If using in a choir, you can have the higher notes sung one octave lower by those out of range, or add a harmonic note as needed. There are only a couple of instances where this might be needed. Solutions to Problems: If you have youth afraid to go on missions, this song will help them take courage and be brave. The original name Duetto Buffo di Due Gatti (Comic Duet for Two Cats) composed by Giacomo Rossini is a comedy composition in an opera style. This arrangement is for four voices with piano accompaniment.Piano is a part of an act, starting too loudly and ‘shushed’ by four cats in bar two who are satisfied in bar 3 with mp playing. Bar 4 of the piano accompaniment adds an extra note to please all four cats. Please treat this music like a dialogue of four characters with the high authority from the bass line. The discussion turns to perfect harmony in bar 34 (Andantino) to move to dialogue between three voices against the soprano cat which wants to show of with the final cadence. This could be treated accordingly to soprano’s range and imagination. The given ending is only a suggestion. It can easily end on top ‘C’ or 'F'. The most important is the accuracy and security of each voice. They need to reflect the spirit of the characters. It is interesting how one simple miau can make this music so expressive. It is fun to sing and a treat to listen to. This is a very good choice for a light-hearted number for any concert, from an opera to recital. Four single voices could be doubled if once prefers. It could be challenging for the choir to keep the tight accuracy of each line but not impossible. Definitely a good choice for four secure voices who are eager to entertain.

To match the topic and brevity of the poem, the work itself isn’t long, lasting only one-and-a-half minutes. The accompaniment delicately yet persistently ticks away, slightly ahead of a second to emphasize the perception of time quickly passing by. The word “short†is always given an eighth duration followed by a rest in the chorus so that a quasi-staccato articulation is perceived with each occurrence. With its sensitive text setting, interesting harmonic palette, and atypical accompaniment, this work makes for unique concert programming. This work may be performed in conjunction with Look back on Time with kindly Eyes (43) to create a multi-movement setting titled Two Dickinson Poems on Time. Duration: 1:30.

Athmospheric voicings of the well knowns chords set the tone for a slow and eerie interpretation that features the basses with most of the melody. The other parts accompany with sighing glissandi and polyphonic phrases that culminate in a powerful bridge. Sopranos have only few optional splits. Altos, sopranos and tenors sing in comfortable ranges while the basses are set a little higher now and then (top note d4). If your singers have a rich vocal sound palette and enjoy musical story-telling with huge dynamic ranges this arrangement is perfect for them.

Of the four, only Christopher Marlowe’s seductive “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love†and Shakespeare’s wise and insightful Sonnet 116 address requited love. On the other hand, John Donne’s “The Message†is a “hate-songâ€, an angry poem about love gone wrong, bursting with bitter recriminations. And Elizabeth I’s “When I Was Fair and Young,†is wistful and full of regret: the Queen realizes that her own youthful pride has obstructed her opportunities for happiness. Together, these poems offer four dramatically contrasting views about love.
