The harsh life of the Andes takes its toll on vicuña young, leaving behind grieving vicuña mothers. The Aymara people suffer similar losses and also cry for their lost loved ones. This yaravà lament includes expressive cadenza sections for both violin and cello, traditional key and rhythm, and a choral setting of Humire’s poignant poetry.

Humire’s poetry reassures us that there is enough uma (water) for all. The popular indigenous huayño dance predates the Spanish conquest. This choral setting celebrates cooperation and sharing of water with embellished instrumental sections and optional panpipes (sikus or zampoñas) played in hocket (trenzado) and charango. Occasional shouts (gritos) may add to the excitement.

Challenged by my friend André Granjo, I wrote this piece for Wind Instruments Group of Coimbra (GISC)​​, where André is now conductor. It is expected to be premiered during the first months of 2013, in collaboration with internationally renowned saxophonist Jean-Yves Fourmeau. I've been teenager GISC saxophonist, and with the group traveled through several European cities, which otherwise would have been impossible for me. I dedicate the Martim’s Legend to GISC and Professor Adelino Martins, who directed the group for decades, until his retirement this year. I related his name with a book I read, A Lenda de Martim Regos written by Pedro Canais and published in 2004. Martin, the main character, is born in Ribatejo (Portuguese province) in the fifteenth century, and his fate led him through Africa, America and Asia. Its amazing fictional story inspired me this music, because of travel, discovery, persistence and distracted absorbing knowledge.

The entire work was completed over the course of the next three years. It received its premiere performance nearly twenty years later by the Elmer Iseler Singers, Lydia Adams director, on February 5, 1999, as winning the composition in the Ruth Watson Henderson Choral Composition Competition for that year. Kyrie, Credo, and Agnus Dei borrow directly from liturgical chant, or are otherwise inspired by the spirit of that repertoire. Missa Brevis is intended both for liturgical and concert use, and may be performed by a quartet or chamber choir. Duration: 14:00.

This heartfelt ballad is from the hit Broadway production Waitress the Musical, written by Sara Bareilles. This arrangement originally premiered at the Barbershop Harmony Society's 2019 International Convention by Momma's Boys, a men's quartet, but all voicings (SSAA, TTBB, SATB) are available. This piece works well for small ensemble (quartet minimum) or a large choir.
This song is contestable in Barbershop Harmony Society contests, Sweet Adeline's International contests, and Harmony Incorporated contests.
