SET A: SATB Choir/Organ (optional brass quintet and timpani-sold separately ) Now Thank We All Our God was originally written ca. 1636 by Protestant minister, Martin Rinkart. The melody is attributed to Lutheran Hymnist, Johann Crüger and was used in three J.S. Bach chorales but the most common version we hear today was harmonized by Felix Mendelssohn in 1840. Martin Rinkart was a deacon in Eisleben Germany where he served during the Thirty Years’ War. The city of Eisleben and Rinkart’s own home became a sanctuary for political refugees during the war. The resulting overcrowding in the walled city resulted in a horrible plague which hit its peak in 1637. Rinkart was the only surviving pastor in the city and before the plague was over he would preside over 4000 funerals include that of his own wife. Despite this, it was during this time that he wrote Now thank we all our God. This new setting of Now Thank We All Our God draws on Rinkart’s fierce spirit of optimism and faith in a time of desolation and despair. To paint the picture of the circumstances in which Rinkart wrote the hymn, this setting opens with the text from Psalm 13: How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?The setting turns quickly, in an act of disruptive optimism and faith, to a lopsided dance of joy. In the end, the setting returns to the opening question of Psalm 13, How long? only to be answered by Rinkart’s declaration, Gifts of love today!

The text is from Ps 28:10b, 11b: Sedebit Dominus Rex in aeternum: Dominus benedicet populo suo in pace. The Lord will sit on his royal throne for ever; the Lord will bless his people in peace.A NOTE FROM THE COMPOSERWhen Fr. Scott Haynes, SJC, sent me the words and original chant material for ‘Sedebit Dominus Rex’ it immediately conjured a vision of a medieval King seated on a throne, grave and powerful. But the figure surprisingly descends to His people and blesses them with peace.Having worked with St. John Cantius’ Saint Cecilia choir on ‘Missa Chicagoenis’ in June 2017, I know these splendid voices have a wide dramatic range, so I wrote expressive music for them, and for Corrado Cavalli, I wanted an interesting organ part with lots of colour.The original Gregorian chant melody presents a pentatonic gesture, so I used that idea, and, combined with some medieval cadences, some Duruflé-inspired counterpoint, and a sprinkling of Wagnerian harmony, I painted the musical picture with an ecstatic, twenty-first- century ending.

Published by Sylvia Miles (A0.1229657). Ar Lan y Môr is a popular tradtional Welsh folk song, and as with many folk songs, there are various versions. My personal preference is for this version; it paints a seashore picture that I can imagine, and I'm completely convinced by the romantic element!Musically speaking, I love the alternating 3 and 4 beat bars; they make me think of waves coming irregularly to the shore.Pronunciation notes: slight roll on all 'r' sounds; rye - 'ye' as in bye-bye; 'ch' as in loch, back of throat; 'll' is said H L - run them together 'hl'. Everything else is written phonetically.Translation: 1. Beside the sea grow red roses, and white lilies, and there lives my true love, sleeping all night and rising in the morning. 2. Down where the sea laps at the flat rock, we walked together, and spoke words of love; lilies grow there, and branches of rosemary.3. By the sea are blue pebbles, golden flowers, everything that's beautiful - and also my dearest sweetheart.
