Pupils also could practice the same lesson in different keys for educational and musical purposes. Each arietta is accompanied by historical notes, interpretative advice and handwritten notes (where present indicate in italics) by Vaccaj himself. All the verses of Metastasio have been rewritten with the orthoepic accents correctly marked on all words of dubious Italian pronunciation. The phonosyntactic doublings are also indicated. An orthoepic legend precedes the method. The appendix includes both the detailed historical notes of each work from which the verses are taken, and the series of intervals to be sung that Vaccaj wrote for the historical editions. The basso continuo has also been made of these sung solfeggios to facilitate their performance by young pianists. This new complete edition of the work, edited in the graphics and paginated from scratch for easier and clearer reading, is further enriched by the precious presentation of Maestro Antonio Juvarra.

To match the topic and brevity of the poem, the work itself isn’t long, lasting only one-and-a-half minutes. The accompaniment delicately yet persistently ticks away, slightly ahead of a second to emphasize the perception of time quickly passing by. The word “short†is always given an eighth duration followed by a rest in the chorus so that a quasi-staccato articulation is perceived with each occurrence. With its sensitive text setting, interesting harmonic palette, and atypical accompaniment, this work makes for unique concert programming. This work may be performed in conjunction with Look back on Time with kindly Eyes (43) to create a multi-movement setting titled Two Dickinson Poems on Time. Duration: 1:30.

Spirituals were birthed and rooted in the experience of chattel slavery in the United States—and arose out of, as Arthur C. Jones asserts, “deeply meaningful, archetypically human experiences, relevant not only to the specific circumstances of slavery but also to women and men struggling with issues of justice, freedom, and spiritual wholeness in all times and places.†The original text of Soon Ah Will Be Done is as follows: Soon ah will be done with the troubles of the world (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God No more weeping and a-wailing (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God I want t’ meet my mother (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God I want t’ meet my Jesus (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God When I sang this spiritual growing up, I was struck by both the withering sorrow and expectant hope throughout. The melody and emotion has stuck with me since. When approaching my own arrangement, I hoped to honor the voice of the original writers and their experience of slavery, and I also sought to extend a voice to people today who are suffering from oppression and discrimination. I hoped an appropriate way to honor the experience of the original writers might be to invite the contemporary listener to envision and commit to a better, more just world today—a world of inclusion, radical kindness, compassion, love, and grace—a world where we have the courage to champion the inherent dignity and value of all people, a world where we will be done with all the ways we deny a person’s worth. A world where “heaven has come to earth.†In this arrangement, spoken word is incorporated throughout, intended to heighten the intensity of the performance, and meant to give a sense of immediacy to the challenge for the choir and audience to work together for justice, equity, and wholeness. Spoken word has often been used as the language of protest—and I include it intentionally as a way of giving voice to the choir members (and listener)—where all can stand in solidarity against oppression and injustice. If desired, choir members are encouraged to write their own spoken word text that speaks to issues of inequity and injustice in their own communities. I am writing this program note not long after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, MN, on May 25, 2020. As a Minneapolis area resident for the past 25 years, I want to take a more active role in working towards justice in my community. All proceeds received from the sale and performance of Soon We Will Be Done will be directed to ISAIAH—a multi-racial, state-wide, nonpartisan coalition of faith communities fighting for racial and economic justice in Minnesota. Published by Dana Usealman (A0.897947). 2018 Holiday Contest EntrySSAATTBThis arrangement should be performable by a high school choir, but can also be appreciated by a more advanced choir.Willie Nelson's iconic song, made famous by Roy Orbison, was written about a disabled street vendor that would sell gift wrap, ribbons, and pencils during the holiday season. It was later embellished and published as a short story. It's a beautiful, yet somber song, that reminds us that not everyone is jolly during the Christmas season. This is a good piece for the middle of a concert to provide a contrast to the typical Christmas genre or to bring awareness and support to those that struggle during the season. Pretty Paper is typically a simple country song with swinging 8ths, but I've arranged it with full harmonies and straight 8ths for a completely different feel. You could still perform it with swinging 8ths if you'd like more of the original character of the piece. I originally thought it would be an a Capella arrangement and arranged all of the voice parts first, but felt it needed a bit more rhythmic pull and added the piano. It could still be performed a Capella for a more simple, thoughtful performance.
