The music begins the first stanza of words in a slow moving tempo in D major, creating a bit of bittersweetness to the listener. Immediately following is the key of E minor, attempting to convey the emotions of sorrow over words such as Every moment becoming a memory. Finally, the piece modulates to the Dominant, A major, as a means to present hope from the final stanza describing the hope of A place that I have never known/ A place where I'll never grow old.

This poem is a monologue, in which one soldier speaks to the fiancé or girlfriend of a dead soldier of his death- mourning his loss and regretting that he will never have the pleasure of the dead soldier’s company again. The poem was inspired by the supposed death of Ivor Gurney’s best friend Willy Harvey in August 1916. Reality told a happier story than the drama described in the poem: Harvey was not in fact killed, but had been made a prisoner of war, returning to his fiancé Sarah Kane at the end of the war.

This work approaches the matter of change, perhaps ironically, via minimalistic techniques and an uplifting perspective. This song is an entirely secular work in Latin. It touches on some minimalist techniques and could be integrated into secondary school music lessons as a means of discussing minimalism and also as a means to introduce students to singing in Latin while avoiding religious ties. That is the story I tried to capture in the poetry and the music of this piece. The text draws on the 'human-ness' of the Christ Child and everything He represents, punctuated by the descending scale heard in the angel's recurring motive 'Gloria in excelsis Deo' that represents the physical act of moving from heaven to earth. What is unusual about the hymn is the position of its doxology (Father, Son and Holy Ghost) in the middle of the hymn, rather than after the last verse, as is common in most settings of psalms, canticles and many hymns from the last 200 years. This enables it to retain a biblical freshness, in which the Son of God is the main focus of attention, with theological reflection secondary to the primary reality that he is the giver of life.
