Traditionally sung before the Gospel Reading on Pentecost Sunday, this piece is also suitable for confirmations or retreats, or any other time in the church year.

While searching for liturgical texts associated with Pentecost, I was immediately drawn to the sequence of Veni Sancte Spiritus as an invocation of all the divine qualities that are recognized across the world’s major religions. I was particularly moved by a recording of the Gregorian chant on this text, in which groups of three phrases alternate between low and high voices. I began my own setting of the sequence by adapting many of the Gregorian chant phrases, from memory and with varying degrees of similarity to the original melody, passing them through different modal colors. I followed a similar pattern of formal alternation between high and low voices, while expanding each phrase of the chant into a two-part texture. Elements of both Late Medieval and Renaissance counterpoint are adopted in combination with more Eastern-influenced heterophony, in which two voices follow the same melodic outline with individual variations and ornamentation. As the piece progresses, overlapping duos expand into three-part and finally four-part texture. I aim to evoke a sense of connection with ancient ritual and musical forms, alongside a more modern harmonic gravity that favors certain dissonances in relationship to unisons, fifths and other “perfect†intervals.

Each movement takes it's inspiration from individual postcards containing pictures of St. Michael's Cathedral in Coventry, England. When performed in sequence, Reconciliation can serve as a worship service however, the individual movements also can stand alone. The postcard associated with this text shows the remains of the bombed out original cathedral shell through a window with the famous Charred Cross prominently in the foreground. This cross is comprised of two wooden beams found in the shape of a cross among the rubble immediately after the bombing in WWII. The repetition and layering of the text represents Jesus making His journey from afar and subsequent triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The joyful welcome from the crowd and shouts for Him to save them is short-lived. His journey must continue until all prophecy is fulfilled and our reconciliation

The piece is composed in three sections, representative of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The close harmonies create the mournful emotional tension. Word painting and story telling is apparent throughout, especially in passages such as resúrget, in which a solo soprano soars above the choir representing the ascension to heaven, and the repeated Lacrimósa, paints an image of tears falling down ones face. A sense of urgency begins to build in the Judicándus section, and the melodic and harmonic structure changes. As the harmonies build and tempo increases you can feel the fear of the unknown future which lies ahead. Begging and pleading for forgiveness ensues as the voices call out, párce Déus, to be seated at the Father’s side. As the tension builds and harmonies become more complex the piece escalates to its climax and comes to an abrupt end. After a slight pause, the calm settles in. Judgement has been passed and the tenors transition us to the PÃe Jésu section with Dóna éis réquiem, surrounded by the return of the melodic motif meant to appear as the angels delivering the assurances of God’s mercifulness. The final phrase dóna éis réquiem, is sung with cross voicing found in the tenor and bass section representing the ascension to heaven as the harmonies settle into their final resting place.

The five verses pass through a sequence of keys, returning to the opening key for the final one. This is then always followed by a rich chordal passage of 'added note' harmonies, in a reverential and meditative manner. The piece is designed for most good choirs to be able to perform unaccompanied, and parts invariably move by semitone or tone movement. The choral-orchestral setting of the shortened Catholic Mass for the Dead in Latin is the best-known of his large works. Its focus is on eternal rest and consolation. In seven movements, the work is scored for soprano and baritone soloists, mixed choir, orchestra and organ. Different from typical Requiem settings, the full sequence Dies irae is omitted, replaced by its section Pie Jesu which is often used as a 'stand alone' movement for religious occasions, notably funerals and memorial services. The original single soprano line is retained and the ATB voices provide an accompaniment. Effective as a solo quartet but also suitable for larger choral forces.
