Published by SCHOLTES EDITIONS (A0.1075505). Land of the Silver Birch is a popular Ontario/Canadian folk song, also known as a 'Canoe' song and sung often at campsites. It became popular in 1920. It is inspired by the indigenous peoples, and the text is said (perhaps erroneously) to have been written by Pauline Johnson (1862-1913), a Mohawk author and poet who celebrated the heritage of her people in poems that had immense appeal in her lifetime. Walter Scholtes also wrote German lyrics that express love of the homeland [available on request].

Although the English translator/lyricist is unknown, one source attributes the translation to Laura Underwood in 1884. The melody derives from a Latin and Czech hymn from before 1500 contained in the Gradual of the Czech Silver Museum in Kutná Hora. This new arrangement treats the lyrics as a joyful call and response (anitphonal) celebration of the birth of Christ.
