There was no king of Judah in Zechariah’s day. The former exiles who had returned to Judah were under the authority of the Persians. Any king would have to be authorized by the higher secular authority. But Zechariah foresees a king who will enter Jerusalem, riding on a donkey. ♫ The choice of the animal here is important. The donkey is the beast of burden of the common man. (Analogous to an economic or dilapidated automobile.) Horses were primarily used by soldiers; something like a victor riding into town in a tank. Mules (Jewish law forbade the breeding of hybrid animals) were the choice of the wealthy. In Judea, they were evidently imported. David had Solomon ride into Jerusalem on his mule (something like a sports car.) But Zechariah sees Messiah will presenting Himself as king riding the transportation of the common person. On Psalm Sunday, about a week before Jesus’ death, the crowds quoted Zechariah 9 and Psalm 118 as Jesus offered Himself to the nation as king. ♫ Hope of the World is made of 2 suites of songs that present messianic prophecies from the Old Testament that are referenced in the New Testament. The first 8 songs center on the birth of Christ, the last 9, Christ’s life and passion. ♫ Includes 1) full score 2) SATB choir part on 2 staves 3) optional shofur part 4) optional trumpet part 5)full score for 10 inch tablet ♫ (Tell your computer which pages you want to print. This is a chorale piece based from Nehemiah 9:5-6. Although It may be difficult to sing, due to the unconventional chords, it is also flexible. It can be pitched down if the soprano notes cannot be reached. It is not professionally written and is, in fact, a first chorale composition of mine. So if you're looking for something different and new, here it is. This song is very high energy and has lots of echos, but I wrote very few of the dynamics into it, so here's your chance to improvise. I suggest having the echos be quieter and fade out. So play with it, and have fun.

Returning home, he began his law practice and eventually became mayor of Guben. As an avocation, the Lutheran politician wrote poems–and soonbecame known as one of the leading hymnists of his time, ranked only behind Gerhard. He is credited for the creation of a group of so-called Jesus hymns, building the foundation for the pietistic hymn movement that would later sweep through Europe. Franck once wrote that poetry should be the nurse of piety, the herald of immortality, the promoter of cheerfulness, the conqueror of sadness, and a foretaste of heavenly glory. Indeed, his hymns echoed his own spirit of encouragement.Lyndell Leatherman (b. 1953) was born into a Nazarene parsonage in southeast Kansas. After studying church music and composition at Olivet Nazarene University (Kankakee, Illinois) and Illinois State University (Bloomington-Normal, Illinois), he launched into a life of music ministry. Since 1977 he has enjoyed a diverse career as church musician, editor, accompanist, composer, and arranger. In 1998 he became aware of Franck’s eucharistic / Advent hymn, translated either Deck Thyself with Joy and Gladness (Mattes) or Deck Thyself, My Soul, with Gladness (Winkworth). Because the text was unique in its unusually exultant treatment of the sacrament of holy communion, Lyndell felt that the hymn was worthy of renewed consideration in the third millennium of Christian worship. So he updated the language and gave it the new musical setting used here. ************It has long been my passion and privilege to create customized arrangements for the churches and schools with whom I have been associated. The New Colossus is a sonnet written by American poet Emma Lazarus in 1883 to raise money for the construction of a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty. In 1903, the poem was cast onto a bronze plaque and mounted inside the pedestal's lower level. 'The New Colossus' reinvented the statue's purpose, turning Liberty into a welcoming mother, a symbol of hope to the outcasts and downtrodden of the world. John T. Cunningham (an American journalist and historian) wrote: The Statue of Liberty was not conceived and sculpted as a symbol of immigration, but it quickly became so as immigrant ships passed under the torch and the shining face, heading toward Ellis Island. However, it was Lazarus's poem that permanently stamped on Miss Liberty, the role of unofficial greeter of incoming immigrantsâ€. In the current political climate, Lazarus's words remain relevant and poignant.

I Will Sing and Praise the Lord is an original piece by Mark Lewis. Written for a cappella choir, the lyrics are adapted from Psalm 61 and the tune is entirely original. It begins with a fanfare asking God to listen and moves into a dance-like prayer for God's blessing with the chorus repeating a simple statement of praise to God. This piece is quite achievable by most groups. The sopranos and basses do spend a fair bit of time towards the extreme of their ranges but there is only one (optional) note that can only be reached by a true bass so most singers will have little difficulty performing it.

Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787250). SONG OF THE MOUNTAINS is a setting for mixed (SSAATB) choir with piano accompaniment of text adapted from prose by American naturalist John Muir (1838-1914). Commissioned for the Combined Choirs of St. Joseph's School, Seattle, directed by Rick Boyle, who premiered the piece at Benaroya Hall's Nordstrom Recital Hall on May 6, 2004, in the second annual New Works New Hope concert for the benefit of Gilda's Club Seattle. The piece was revised in 2007 and the premiere of the revised score was given on November 16, 2007, by the Queens College Chorus, Cindy Bell conducting, at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York. It was selected by the Portland Vocal Consort for their 2013 Best of the Northwest program. Duration ca. 6 minutes. Conductor Cindy Bell says, Driven by a refreshing text of American naturalist John Muir, Bartholomew has created an accessible work that flows easily through both key and meter changes, and features expressive, lyric melodies contrasted by exciting rhythmic drive. Song of the Mountains is almost cantata-like, or through-composed, in that each line of Muir's text receives equal and interesting interpretation. Occasional use of the triplet rhythm creates both a relaxing effect (grasses cease waving) and driving sense of forward motion (Vibrating!). Effective use of dynamics and interweaving of choral parts make for each section having a musical life of its own. The trees wave and the flowers bloom in our bodies as in our souls, and every bird song, wind song, and tremendous storm song of the rocks in the heart of the mountain, is our song, our very own, and sings our love.

In 1 John, we witness the Apostle (that Jesus loved) writing as the elder statesman of the faith in the last third of the 1st century. In chapter two, verse seven, John refers to the church as beloved and proceeds by telling them of a new commandment. He says (verses 9-11), Whoever loves his brother, abides in the light and there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. From this text, John immediately segues into verses 12-14, to affirm for his followers that as far as they are concerned, there is no darkness in them for they are the children of the Light to whom he was earlier referring. John achieves this transition by employing yet another 1st century Hymn to Christ, which I have entitled, Through His Name. This anthem is an affirmation of the faith, first to the little children, then to the fathers, and then to the young men. What is very interesting is that the first stanza is written in the present tense (I am writing to you) but the second stanza, with very similar wording, is written in the past tense (I have written to you). It’s as if to say, you heard the Gospel message before, and you believed, and I am writing it to you again, so that you may continue to believe.

Program note.The greatest challenge of the Stabat Mater text is to figure out how to set twenty stanzas of pain and suffering without making it all sound too depressing. So, before I began composing, I looked at a number of scores and recordings of Stabat Mater by various composers: DesPrez, Palestrina, Pergolesi, Boccherini, Vivaldi, Haydn, Dvorak, Rossini, Poulenc, Szymanowski, Penderecki, et al. It was fascinating to see what each composer did with regard to text setting: the variety of musical textures from movement to movement, different approaches to the use of fast or allegro music to offset the mood of the text, solo versus choral sections, etc. Each composer took a very personal and creative approach to the task. It was a fascinating study! After weeks of listening and scrutinizing, I decided to divide the twenty-stanza text into six sections.
