I was tasked to think about what songs my grandparents sang to me. Que Sera, Sera, although not a folksong, was the first that came to mind. My maternal grandmother had sung this to me in my younger days. Not long after, my grandmother announced that she intended to sell her house - the very house that I spent most of my growing-up years in. This was followed by many weeks of packing her belongings, uncovering forgotten treasures, and recalling the days of my childhood. Quite aptly, arranging this piece gave me an avenue to express my sentimental thoughts, and say goodbye to an old house filled with so many memories. I hope that both the performer and the listener can be transported back in time, even if just for a few minutes, to reminisce the happier and more carefree days of our lives. Furthermore, let us count our blessings in the present, as the future’s not ours to see. Que Sera, Sera. Lyrics: There Is a SpiritThere is a spirit which I feel that delights to do no evil, nor to revenge any wrong, but delights to endure all things, in hope to enjoy its own in the end. Its hope is to outlive all wrath and contention, and to weary out all exaltation and cruelty, or whatever is of a nature contrary to itself. It sees to the end of all temptations. As it bears no evil in itself, so it conceives none in thoughts to any other. If it be betrayed it bears it for its ground and spring is the mercies and forgiveness of God. Its crown is meekness, its life is everlasting love unfeigned; it takes its kingdom with entreaty and not with contention, and keeps it with lowliness of mind. In God alone it can rejoice though none else regard it or can own its life. It's conceived in sorrow, and brought forth without any to pity it, nor doth it murmur at grief and oppression. English.The second piece of Two Pickthall Songs' suggests that whatever is in our hearts may remain there so that we are never truly parted. The music has three main sections which correspond to the three main images of the poem: Love, in whom all things are; Love, in whom all things nest; and Love, in whom all things hide. The main melodic idea is sustained while the harmonies meander. This is to represent the notion that events in life can be unexpected; things change, and we must forge a new path. The opening line of the text, Love, in whom all things are, is repeated to act as a cleansing phrase to end the piece, and to return us to the idea that we can find love and compassion in everything. All we have to do is to look. Duration: 2:30.
