English.This text from an old Southern folk hymn is given new original music in this anthem setting for SATB, cello, and piano. The piano part can easily be adapted to organ. The voice parts are accessible. The tenors and basses do sing a verse alone, but in unison to two parts. The sum total makes a sort of contemplative tapestry in which the cello moves in and out of the foreground and so do the voices. Set mostly in C minor, there is a middle section where the chorus sings wordlessly against the cello line and the emphasis shifts to E-flat major. Despite the despair in the text, there is also comfort and reassurance here.

This arrangement opens with the first verse as it is seen in the originalSouthern Harmony of 1835 (transposed down a fourth). Subsequent verses borrowmuch from the stark sound of the original. This style of song is part of the living"Sacred Harp" tradition (so named after a later collection of these songs) in whichpeople have gathered and sung in for over 150 years.This arrangement was premiered by Phoenix Rising at the 2008 Comunity EasterCelebration held at the Alpine Tabernacle in American Fork, UT.

The lyrics are partially anonymous but most published versions include verses that seem to have been added by the arranger of that version. This Epiphany song has similar themes to We Three Kings but is definitely a refreshing change from that well known tune. This fun arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for Baritone soloist, SATB choir, a woodwind instrument, and bass instrument. Included is sheet music for C, Bb, and Eb instruments and a bass line which can be played by many different bass instruments depending on what the group has available. The instrumentalists can transpose their parts to different octaves for ease of playing if necessary. The Baritone soloist should be a well experienced intermediate singer and the bass line is very active at times, but the choir and woodwind parts should be performable by most intermediate groups. The text is thought to be loosely based on his conversion to Christianity. One of the most common tunes to be associate with the text is Restoration, sometimes known as Arise. This pentatonic tune comes from the Southern Harmony collection. This a cappella arrangement by Mark Lewis passes the melody between all four voice parts with key changes that place the melody nicely within every vocal range. Alternating between arpeggiating and homophonic accompaniment, this arrangement provides a wide variety of singing experiences for the choir over the course of the song.

And the Rio Grande referred to in this song is that one in the southernmost part of Brazil known as Rio Grande do Sul.
