The text, like many freedom songs, celebrates both earthly emancipation and the freedom from burdens in the world to come. It has been recorded and performed many times, notably by Odetta, and by Joan Baez at the 1963 March on Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his indelible I Have A Dream speech.Both the text and the melody have evolved over time, and variations abound. This setting reflects my own interpretation of several traditional versions, and combines traditional and more contemporary harmonic choices. It is set for a cappella SATB choir and features 1-3 soloists.

A vivid and at times raucous celebration of Saturnalia, in Latin, for an ensemble of voices and instruments (including various percussion, woodwind and brass instruments). The sound sample is a sung performance by the composer with an electronic preview of the instruments. Further explanations: Song for Saturnalia - a raucous and fun romp - in whole tones (since there is scant evidence of the types of scales used in those days - whole tones just seem to work in this context). The Latin words make references to relatively modern times but the spirit of Saturnalia is timeless, after all. The pileum (also written pilleum) is the little cap that slave wore during Saturnalia to show they were free men and women on that day - they would point to their cap and say libertus sum (I am a free person) and omnes aequales sumus (we are all equal). The words (and translation - both by me) are as follows: Saturnalia Song Io Saturnalia! Hodie igitur dominus noster non es. [Hooray, it’s Saturnalia, so today you’re not our boss] Hodie omnes aequales sumus. Io! [Today we are all equal, hooray!] [spoof of USA Anthem] Salve O Frutici [Hi there, Bush] Ecce meum pileum: [Look, see my little cap of freedom] libertus sum [I’m a free man] [spoof of UK Anthem] Salve O Campestri [Hi there, Blair] Ecce meum pileum: [Look, see my little cap of freedom] libertus sum [I’m a free man] [spoof of German Anthem] Salve O Candelari [Hi there Brandt] Ecce meum pileum: [Look, see my little cap of freedom] libertus sum [I’m a free man] Io Saturnalia, Io! [Hooray, it’s Saturnalia, hooray!] [Note on the invented names (used in the vocative in the song of course): Fruticius is based on the word frutex a bush - it’s also used to mean blockhead in Roman comedies, but I can’t help that!. Campestrius is based on campester - a plain or place of clear ground (Blair is the Celtic equivalent word - a forest clearing!) Candelarius is based on candela - a taper or candle - ie something burning hence Brandt (yes, I know he’s earlier than the other two politicians, but, hey, it’s all a bit of anachronistic fun!)].

About the ComposerBorn in the prominent Hall family of Coffeyville, Kansas on May 17, 1919, Verna May Hall (birth name) emerged as a motion picture actress, recording artist, television and radio host of “The Word with Dr. Verna Hall Linzey,” and “Operation Freedom.” She was a bestselling author, master of biblical languages, Bible translator, and speaker. In the motion picture Iniquity, which is a modern version of the account of David and Bathsheba, her role was that of the lead juror. The songwriting and poetry of Verna May Hall Linzey portrays her philosophy of life that made her an American English icon. Verna received the 2006 “Best Non-Fiction of the Year” Award from the San Diego Christian Writers’ Guild for her book, The Baptism with the Holy Spirit, She also authored The Gifts of the Spirit, Spirit Baptism, and Pearls of Gold (The Poetry of Verna Hall Linzey). She received the Gold Record Award for “Best Vocals in Southern Gospel Music” from the International Biographical Centre for her CD, O Blessed Jesus in 2012. This album included the Triumphant Quartet and Sisters singing backup vocals. The Triumphant Quartet was nominated for a Grammy Award and has been voted as the number one quartet in Southern Gospel Music for several years in a row.In 2015, Verna received the Best-Selling Author’s Award from the National Critics’ Choice as the translator of Proverbs for the Modern English Version Bible. The MEV has been in the top ten-selling English Bible translations in 2015 according to the Evangelical Christian Publishing Association. Verna is the Chief Editor of the New Tyndale Version Bible translation.On Sunday, May 8, 2016, a commemorative edition of the Modern English Version Bible was presented to the Queen, Her Majesty Elizabeth II, at Windsor Castle by Verna Linzey, the translation committee, and her publisher. Verna was subsequently named “Mother of the Fleet” by Admiral Frederick C. Johnson, USN (Ret.) and his staff of Navy and Marine officers at MCAS Miramar in San Diego, California. Charles Wesley’s (1707-1788) Advent hymn, “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus,†from Hymns for the Nativity of our Lord (1744), reflects the dual nature of Advent for Christians, in that it recalls the first coming and incarnation of the Messiah while also anticipating His return.Each stanza presents a different idea: Stanza 1, the longing for freedom from sin and fear; Stanza 2, attributes of or names for Christ; Stanza 3, the Messiah's birth, kingdom, and purpose; and Stanza 4, a prayer for Christ's rule in believers' hearts. Among the Scriptures referenced in the hymn are 2 Corinthians 4:14, Revelation 3:21, Isaiah 61:1-2, Luke 4:18-19, and Romans 6:22. In this setting of Wesley’s text to an original tune, a short introduction is followed by verse 1, presented by women’s voices (soprano, alto) and verse 2, presented by men’s voices (tenor, bass). Spirituals were birthed and rooted in the experience of chattel slavery in the United States—and arose out of, as Arthur C. Jones asserts, “deeply meaningful, archetypically human experiences, relevant not only to the specific circumstances of slavery but also to women and men struggling with issues of justice, freedom, and spiritual wholeness in all times and places.†The original text of Soon Ah Will Be Done is as follows: Soon ah will be done with the troubles of the world (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God No more weeping and a-wailing (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God I want t’ meet my mother (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God I want t’ meet my Jesus (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God When I sang this spiritual growing up, I was struck by both the withering sorrow and expectant hope throughout. The melody and emotion has stuck with me since. When approaching my own arrangement, I hoped to honor the voice of the original writers and their experience of slavery, and I also sought to extend a voice to people today who are suffering from oppression and discrimination. I hoped an appropriate way to honor the experience of the original writers might be to invite the contemporary listener to envision and commit to a better, more just world today—a world of inclusion, radical kindness, compassion, love, and grace—a world where we have the courage to champion the inherent dignity and value of all people, a world where we will be done with all the ways we deny a person’s worth. A world where “heaven has come to earth.†In this arrangement, spoken word is incorporated throughout, intended to heighten the intensity of the performance, and meant to give a sense of immediacy to the challenge for the choir and audience to work together for justice, equity, and wholeness. Spoken word has often been used as the language of protest—and I include it intentionally as a way of giving voice to the choir members (and listener)—where all can stand in solidarity against oppression and injustice. If desired, choir members are encouraged to write their own spoken word text that speaks to issues of inequity and injustice in their own communities. I am writing this program note not long after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, MN, on May 25, 2020. As a Minneapolis area resident for the past 25 years, I want to take a more active role in working towards justice in my community. All proceeds received from the sale and performance of Soon We Will Be Done will be directed to ISAIAH—a multi-racial, state-wide, nonpartisan coalition of faith communities fighting for racial and economic justice in Minnesota. Maya Angelou's work inspires me, so I set her poem Caged Bird to music with divisi SATB choir and English horn, which represent the cage and the bird, respectively. The longing call of the solo reed instrument tries to escape the clutch of the choir narrating its predicament with voice. It was nice not having to write my own text, but I did choose this poem intentionally at the dawn of the Covid-19 pandemic. My aim was to embody the hollow feeling of living in a society that offers freedom with one hand but firmly directs people with the other. The PDF download includes the score followed by the English Horn part. The piano reduction, not audible in the recording, is nice for rehearsal but optional for the performance.
