Ken Litton (ASCAP)As an SBC music missionary active in Brazil I quickly discovered the hymns missionaries had taken with them as the work gained impetus from the 1890s when the Bagbys arrived to build on the foundation laid by early pioneers like Solomon Ginsburg. I found myself leading those hymns from the nearly 100 year old Cantor Cristão (Christian Singer) in the strongly attended evening services at the Igreja Batista Rio Doce (Sweet River Baptist Church) in Recife, with people literally leaning in through the windows from outside to sing along. Just a normal p.m. attendance or... curiosity about the missionary leading? No, certainly it was the message of the gospel in these great hymns and in the Brazilians’ creative work as well. I mainly remember holding that small print hymnal in one hand and leading with the other (shaking badly) and singing in Portuguese!From that kind of congregational participation I vividly remember the hymn Blessed be the Fountain by Eden Reeder Latta (1839 - 1915) and Henry Southwick Perkins (1833 -1914) with it’s energetic dotted eighth and sixteenth rhythm figures and text of confession based on Zechariah 13:1. That text was very important in the lives of disciples in Brazil and in my own heart. Here I have used only the verses of the text and tune, simply smoothing out the rhythm and adjusting the lyric to more modern usage (yet preserving the devotional pronouns Thee, Thy and Thine).The tune BLESSED BE THE FOUNTAIN is altered in rhythm, tempo and one descending interval from the original. The arrangement is by me, having built the intro, interlude and key change as well as the ending from the material that constituted the refrain in the origina. As a bridge and additional textual/musical impulse into the key change and final verse I’ve interpolated the refrain from the well-known gospel hymn Whiter than Snow (FISCHER) by James Nicholson and William G. Fischer.The voices include a wide variety of unison, two-part and four-part passages that are well within the capability of the average church choir. The accompaniment difficulty level is about as minimal as it can be I hope, while still reflecting support for the voices, a measure of variety as well as some real independence.I certainly think choirs of some ability and their dedicated accompanists will enjoyWhiter Than the Snow as much as I have in developing it.

Having a lot of fifths and blending can make this piece beautiful and clean. The humming bits (the mms) can be adjusted to an oo, oh, or ah sound depending on the director's preference. The music reminds me of little children skipping with glee under a bright blue morning sky. It needs to be sung with joy in the Lord, Who hears us when we call, forgives our sins, and gives us grace to love Him, keep his commands and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. It should be a wonder morning service anthem, but why not try it in the evening, too, in anticipation of meeting God at the beginning of the next day. The key to the style of this piece is rhythmic vitality. The 6/8 meter should be conducted in two, but singers (and the conductor) must feel the eighth note division of the beat as the composition's energizing rhythmic subtext. After the choir has learned the words, pitches and rhythms of the piece, have them let the text go for awhile, and replace it with the syllable doo for every eighth note value. That is, for every eighth note sing 'doo once; for every quarter note sing it twice; for every dotted quarter note sing it three times, and so on. You will hear some giggling from your singers. Published by TALLULAH TUNES (A0.933412). 2016 Choral Contest Entry - In late 2014, Dan Korneychuk, music director at the Bel Air Presbyterian church in Los Angeles, asked me to score one of his favorite poems which was written by Samuel Grossman in 1664. It had been put to music unsuccessfully, some felt, several times in the past. I decided to write a ‘hymn version’ first, much as it would appear in a traditional hymnal. Unfortunately, the text traversed the extremes of emotion in the telling of Christ’s passion rendering the melody inappropriate in places. I decided to keep to the hymn version as much as possible, but when the emotional story differed from the musical one, I used harmonic variation and dissonance, utilizing the wide palette of the orchestra to tell the story. This piece has been performed on Palm Sunday. Versions exist in the form of a hymn, an arrangement for 10 brass and 2 percussion, an arrangement for SATB/piano, An arrangement for SATB/organ, and an arrangement for orchestra.Questions or comments? However, its intense and sometimes dramatic treatment and universal addressability due to its well-known and rather concentrated text, yet also due to eliminating the „Filioque†(which would still fit the rhythm of the repeated „qui ex Patreâ€, should any Catholics ever wish to perform this as a mass) make it rather a „liturgical oratorio for all nationsâ€, more appropriate in the concert hall. The work has had a long gestation: imagined in 1984 after the composer’s first contact with Beethoven’s masterpiece, then sketched first in 1987-1989, and many of its themes date back from those years. Its working out is quite polyphonic, discretely modal and cyclical, and also full of centuries-old musical symbols traditionally associated with the setting of the mass text: e.g. unisons for the more dogmatical parts, Baroque dotted rhythms at the Nativity (the first coming of the  King of Kings), „rex caelestis†and also at his Passion (whose setting is discretely inspired by folkloric Romanian laments), the „anabasis†gesture at „Gloria in excelsis Deoâ€, „et ascendit in caelisâ€, „in remissionem peccatorum†and the resurrection, a flute trill standing for the Holy Spirit who has come ’like a dove’ at „et incarnatus estâ€, a cross-shaped texture at „crucifixusâ€, and some word-painting (hushed sonorities at „et invisibiliumâ€, anticipations between orchestra and chorus at „et exspecto†etc.). Moreover, certain symbolic roles are assigned to the instrumental groups when alone (the organ represents God the Father and transcendence, the winds and/or solo voices represent God the Son and humanity, and the strings represent the Holy Spirit). „Kyrie†is restrained and soft, besides the powerful chords opening the respective sections of its tripartite, simple structure, and it leans towards Palestrina’s serene modality and counterpoint. „Gloria†begins with a colorful orchestral introduction depicting discretely the shepherds who kept watch over their flocks right before the Nativity, and then gradually the bright revelation. „Credo†has an orchestral introduction as well, but powerful, recurring and based on the beginning of the plainchant hymn „Pange linguaâ€, made famous by Mozart’s last symphony and by other Classical composers. Both „Gloria†and „Credo†end with extended, powerful and elaborate fugues („in gloria Dei Patris†and „et vitam venturi saeculiâ€, respectively) with dramatic modulations and sometimes with enthusiastic syncopations at odds with the words’ accents, a la Stravinsky. The same sections plus „Agnus Dei†end with soft quartal harmonies suggesting transcendent appeasement (similar harmonies appear powerfully at the beginning of „Sanctusâ€). „Judicare†quotes the beginning of the well-known „Dies irae†plainchant tune, and the Consecration between the „Sanctus†and „Benedictus†sections is represented by a contemplative prelude for solo organ, quoting Lutheran chorales, too. Another long orchestral introduction, suggesting the Last Judgment and based on traditional Byzantine hymns, opens „Agnus Deiâ€, which includes another quotation (the famous ’Dresden Amen’ at „qui tollis peccata mundi†and „dona nobis pacemâ€). In the final section, with its refined simplicity, the choral voices enter in descending order, and the „Kyrie eleison†theme is briefly remembered, then it ends softly and peacefully. Total duration: 50 min. The rhythmic material in this series is organized into 10 difficulty levels. Each difficulty level contains four exercises in each of the following time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8. This gives exercises in 2, 3, and 4 beats per bar in both simple and compound meters. The first two exercises of each time signature have no ties while the remaining two exercises in each time signature include ties. In Book 1 of this series you’ll find difficulty levels 1 to 5, while Book 2 completes the set with levels 6 to 10. The exercises in this collection are intentionally random and difficult to internalize. They don’t follow any predictable or standard groove pattern, but instead are random successions of eighth- and sixteenth-note groupings within the prescribed difficulty level. In keeping the rhythmic material as unpredictable as possible the door is left open for the materials to be used in conjunction with any number of exercises, while forcing the user to process every rhythm as its own event without relying on pattern recognition to help in identifying the rhythms. To curate the difficulty of rhythm in as objective a way as possible I looked at all of the possible eighth-note and sixteenth-note groupings within the basic unit of one beat. Each difficulty level builds on the exercises of the previous by adding groupings that are slightly more conceptually challenging. Difficulty Level 9 contains all possible groupings, while Level 10 focuses on the more challenging groupings by omitting easy ones. Some suggestions for how to use this book include: Practice sight-reading. When doing so it is encouraged to cycle through the exercises quickly rather than dwelling on a particular exercise for a long period of time. The goal in practising sight-reading is not to learn the material but to develop the skill of reading new material. Use a metronome! The most important thing you can do with this material is learn how to read these rhythms and play them in time. Advanced metronome work: Place the metronome click on weak beats. With the metronome clicking only on the beat you run the risk of relying on the metronome to give you the time. Placing the metronome click on non-strong beats forces you to take responsibility for the time. For example, instead of putting the metronome click on each quarter-note in 4/4, play the exercise with the metronome giving the second eighth note of each beat, or the last sixteenth note, or beats 2 and 4, or only the downbeat of each bar. Be creative with this one! The possibilities are limitless. Develop independence between hands by playing a repeating pattern in one hand while reading an exercise in the other. Expand on this by adding patterns in hands and feet while reading a rhythm with a remaining limb. This is a great exercise for drummers and percussionists but any instrumentalist could benefit from coordination practice. Use these rhythms to practice scales. Instead of playing scales in straight sixteenth-notes, try playing them in the rhythms given in these exercises. Write in sticking patterns, dynamics, accents, phrase marks, or other articulations for you or your students to practice. If you’re not happy with the ties I included, feel free to add some of your own. Combine the above exercises in any way that you think will be beneficial to your practice. As with any of the Dots and Beams books, the uses for this particular collection are limited only by the imagination of the musician using it. I encourage anybody using this book to find as many uses for these exerci.

Metrical, mostly homophonic, and conservative in technical challenges and ranges, these canticles are accessible for small choirs and those of moderate ability, yet musically satisfying for large and accomplished groups. Phos Hilaron (“O Gladsome Lightâ€) is one of the earliest known Christian hymns (ca. 3rd-4th century) recorded outside of the Bible. Intended to be sung at the kindling of lights in the evening, it is sometimes known as the “lamp-lighting hymn†and has been adopted by some Anglican bodies as an optional invitatory canticle immediately preceding the psalm(s) appointed for the day.Magnificat (The Song of Mary) is a scriptural canticle based on an account in the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, visits her cousin  Elizabeth, the expectant mother of John the Baptist, who will prophetically proclaim the coming of the Messiah. Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith and subjection to God’s will, and Mary responds, “My soul doth magnify the Lord ... for he that is mighty hath magnified me ... and his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.†The Magnificat is said or sung immediately after the first lesson (scripture reading) in the service of evening prayer. Nunc Dimittis (The Song of Simeon) is also a scriptural canticle taken from Luke (2:29-32).  Simeon, a devout Jew, had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. And beauty can still be found in sadness, or endings whether the be falling leaves in the park, or even with the events that are said , we grow and learn, being grateful for what we have , and learn to find our voices to speak out for the things that truly matter in life. This music, which is much like a hymnal, especially in the beginning of the piece, is perfect for this message. A message of peace, reflectiveness and hope and courage. As a side note , this piece should be played with lots of thoughtful rubato, and when the meter changes for 4/4(5/4) to 12/8, the beat does not change from quarter to dotted quarter .In the middle, minor section, I really added and improvised my musical skills per chord and melody of the song which makes my arrangement very distinctive, individual and unique. This would be great for a movie themed concert, all by it's self, for a funeral, for Arbor Bay/ Tree ceremony , for fall or autumn music/ themed programs, recitals, etc. Sure to be a well used piece in your collection. In 1958 Shanklin had suggested the song to a California lounge circuit duo Art and Dotty Todd. They liked the song and produced a demo recording, which was later released as a single by Era Records. Si Je Peut T'Aimer details the emotion of love through various seasons from the fruits of Spring to the requiems of Winter, and the roller-coaster rides throughout. Near the end, desperation starts to show, but as acceptance starts to settle in, the music slows and ends with a cadence signifying that it's time to move on.It can be performed by anyone who'd like to use, I have no set audience in mind. It can be performed by schools if they so wish and can be used to show the various displays of emotion that music can display using different methods of composition. However, I would refrain from any sorts of religious service as this is best served as entertainment. In regards to the choir, stagger breathing is highly recommended for the difficult parts, or whenever feels necessary- which could be after ever dotted half note/ measure, or after every phrase. The dynamics are left to the director or the people who shall perform it. This leaves it to be personalised for each group, and unique to each one's own story; I just gave the template. To note: one can replace the choir with another 2 cellos and 2 violins, if desired. It is also important to note that when playing, the choir is the accompaniment to the piano and strings, and serves to reinforce the story that is being told, not explicitly telling the story itself. .

Even though it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion, being intended for beginner students who want to immerse themselves in the universe of romantic music, and nothing better than starting with the transitional composer of this period, which also does not prevent professional teachers from using it for recitals, academic presentations or didactic material in their classes as an ensemble practice. Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor sharp, Op. 27, No. 2, is one of his most popular compositions and was an audience favorite even in his day. Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).
