English.The Seasons was commissioned by the South Bend Chamber Singers, Nancy Menk, conductor, and first performed on March 3, 2013 by the South Bend Chamber Singers with the Euclid Quartet in a concert devoted to music about the weather. The texts for this work were selected by the composer, and they represent three different time periods, the 17th, 19th and early 20th centuries, to show that writers have long been fascinated by the seasons and by the distinct weather conditions that each season brings. Although certain types of weather, such as wind or rain, may occur in any of the seasons, the descriptions of weather in these four poems present specific weather conditions which commonly occur in each of the four seasons: a still, hot, sultry day interrupted by the movement of a light breeze from the hills (summer); the cooling morning mists and light frost which signal the coming of winter (autumn); the bitter iciness of fierce winds and frozen air-in this poem, further compared with man's ingratitude (winter); the warm rains and southerly winds that melt the ice and bring about new life (spring). Throughout this piece various musical devices are employed to underscore or even interpret the words. These devices include text painting, contrapuntal structures (double canon and fugue), and dramatically shifting harmonic colors as each season unfolds. The contrasting performing forces of mixed choir and string quartet are particularly well-suited for presenting, very colorfully, the various musical depictions of the weather conditions and characteristics of each of the seasons. -Frank FerkoDuration: 2:40.

Re-imagined for double reed choir, it is a challenging and fun setting for this fugue. The different instruments take turns entering with the subject of the fugue, and interplay back and forth with the other instruments. The timbres of the different instruments adds a whole new textural dimension to this already fascinating work by J.S. Bach. I considered the need to breathe for each of these wind instruments, which obviously wasn't an issue for the original version intended for organ. This piece would be appropriate for advanced high school students, college students, or professionals. It would do well in a chamber music concert, in a church, or between acts of a larger ensemble concert, perhaps in another location of the auditorium while a (quiet!) set change is taking place. It would also work well as prelude or lobby music. The duration is just over three minutes (or longer if you prefer to take it slower). Each measure is numbered individually for convenience during rehearsals. I hope you will enjoy performing this piece as much as I have enjoyed arranging it! German.Since an invitation to the Emerald Isle, Harald Genzmer (1909-2007) has been fascinated with the local tradition and culture. Therefore, after the songs 'Irische Harfe', he wrote another cycle for mixed choir at a ripe old age: 'Lieder einer Insel'. In three parts with ten choral settings altogether, the composer tells stories from the mythology of the Emerald Isle in the Irish poems, in the texts of old and modern lyricists, describes emotions, desires, laments: from 'Weissagung Cathbads' to 'Lobgesang der Gerechten', from the bright 'Mönch und seinem Lieblingskater' to the sad lament 'Das Lied in einem Mädchenherzen', from the tender 'Anrufung des Friedens' to the contemplate 'Abendgebet'. The freely tonal settings range from simple, chordal-homophonic via declamatory to expressive. Of intermediate difficulty, these choral miniatures are suitable not only for professional ensembles but also for ambitious amateur choirs.

English.Although I had already set separate Latin versions of both the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, this is the first time I’ve made a setting in English of both texts for use at Evensong. I have often attended Evensong in the Cambridge college chapels: it’s a service whose meanings and spirituality are quite different from any other, and it has its own special atmosphere. Evensong’s coupling of Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis texts is fascinating: the exuberant celebration of the former contrasts so marvellously with the intimate reflections of the latter. In my Evening Canticles I have tried to make the most of that contrast. The Magnificat is forceful, replete with sprung rhythms, polymeter, and bright harmonies showing off the brilliance of the choir. Some use is made (especially near the opening) of free rhythms in which every singer performs a passage at their own speed, creating a spray of sound. The Nunc Dimittis, on the other hand, is predominantly clear and transparent, even austere, allowing the singers to shape melodic lines with expression and lyricism, as befits the text. I was enormously excited to be invited to compose my Evening Canticles for Andrew Nethsingha and the Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge. I want to thank all the performers for giving the work such a splendid launch, and for the magnificent recording on this CD. The work is dedicated to Andrew Nethsingha. JA 2019.

In reply to the question what, to him, makes up the charm of these poetic gems, the award-winning (choral) composer said: 'The poems which were set to music in the 1980s fascinated me with their mysterious look at a world behind things. This is the space in which I have always wanted to move musically. The music is mainly atmospheric, linear and freely tonal.'.

Written for SSAATTBB Choir.I have long been fascinated with setting old Latin texts to music; particularly ones outside of the traditional sacred poetry found in the various requiems that have been composed throughout the centuries. Rather, I was particularly drawn to a poem written by the Roman poet Catullus. Simple in nature, the poem is only 3 phrases yet delivers a strong message of the turmoil found in the human psyche. “Odi et Amo†translates to “I hate and I loveâ€. The poem embellishes the poets struggle to balance the extremes of the human emotion and how torturous it can be to navigate 2 of our strongest emotions. The call of the opening “Odi et Amo†is repeated numerous times throughout the piece to drive home the 2 emotions of Hate and Love. The work commands exceptional precision of intonation between the 8 parts. While slow in nature though its tempo, the piece has numerous harmonic classes of 2nds to create not only tension, but a longing passion desperate for resolution. -Aaron Gage.

So, before I began composing, I looked at a number of scores and recordings of Stabat Mater by various composers: DesPrez, Palestrina, Pergolesi, Boccherini, Vivaldi, Haydn, Dvorak, Rossini, Poulenc, Szymanowski, Penderecki, et al. It was fascinating to see what each composer did with regard to text setting: the variety of musical textures from movement to movement, different approaches to the use of fast or allegro music to offset the mood of the text, solo versus choral sections, etc. Each composer took a very personal and creative approach to the task. It was a fascinating study! After weeks of listening and scrutinizing, I decided to divide the twenty-stanza text into six sections.
