There’s a beauty found where minds meet that no one person can achieve alone.   So, in search of that beauty, before I even started to work on this piece, I met with the students of Waukesha North High School at the end of their 2023 school year. And we talked. We talked about how life was going. The good and bad. The ups and downs. Things lost. Things found… They shared some laughs and even some tears… The conversations we had were unexpectedly poignant and stuck with me throughout the writing process.   School is a time of great change in our lives and often we are so focused on “getting through†that we don’t really stop to appreciate it until later. This piece celebrates that part of the process. The way we build onto ourselves- acknowledging and accepting that our experiences we have during this time, both good and bad, are crucial to our identity and our ability to move forward in life. They are the cornerstones of who we are and who we become… Inspired by these experiences we shared, I wrote this text. It’s about building a house. The “house†being our self.

Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719733). As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include Break Thou the Bread of Life, Come, Ye Thankful People, Come, and We Gather Together.

Through the utilization of the overtone series, “Despondency†portrays a haunting soundscape that gradually builds into a solemn tone cluster, evoking a sense of emptiness and sadness. The overtone series serves as the foundation upon which the composition unfolds, weaving together a tapestry of natural harmonies that resonate with an ethereal quality. Despite the simplicity of its text, consisting of only four sung words – Nothing. Aching. Empty. Broken. – these words reflect the raw and unfiltered experience of despair and sorrow. “Despondency†is movement 3 of Jay Dougherty’s Phoenix Cantata, which is a six-movement vocal and piano work that explores the themes of resilience and the transformative power of change. The music and lyrics are the creative work of Dr. Jay Dougherty, with a piano accompaniment by Justin La. Drawing inspiration from the mythical symbolism of the phoenix, this cantata narrates the journey through life's challenges and tribulations and explores how we can learn to comprehend, embrace, and grow from them. Although the Phoenix is not explicitly mentioned, the underlying message resonates with the tale of the phoenix: after facing adversity or transformation, we emerge stronger and more beautiful. Each of the 6 movements centers on a flower garden, the gardener's affection for the garden, the looming storm that could devastate it, and the gardener's eventual realization that, even after the storm, the garden remains beautiful and precious. Movement 3, Despondency, is performed a cappella and makes use of the overtone series and chord clusters to convey the gardener's torment and heartbreak as the garden has lost its innocence after a torrential storm.
