I’ve returned to it often, to read and to make use of passages in compositions. The Prophet is a wondrous treasure trove of amazing poetry – covering life, death, and everything in between: love, friendship, children, work, power. And time.I always focus carefully on any texts I wish to use, read and rhythmize them in different ways they could be read and interpreted, and choose words and sentences that deserve to be emphasized, to stop and ponder on, or simply let go and flow. So too in this, in my opinion, magnificent poem. Sometimes there’s very little movement, sometimes it courses on in a mighty and unfathomable manner. Never predictable. I hope I managed to bring out the timelessness. – Sven Hagvil.

Here is a new melody and melodic interpretation of the familiar text by Frederick Faber. The choral writing is not difficult though it has some chromatic alteration in the 3rd line of each verse with the harmony somewhat different each time. The relaxed piano accompaniment is generally very supportive of the singers so the piece should be accessible for most choirs. It would make a nice addition to the church choral library.

The vocal parts are all within normal ranges and of no particular difficulty. The piano accompaniment is of medium difficulty. Meter changes set off the verses from the chorus melody, one verse may be sung a cappella and there is one key change. This is appropriate for both worship services and any public Christmas program venue. Performance time is five minutes. There are two other arrangements on the website, one for vocal solo medium voice and one for two-part women's chorus or duet. The lyricist, Bruce C.
