Voicing: SATB a cappella, with rhythm section (piano, electric bass, drums) Style: Bossa Nova This arrangement of Ray Conniff's Favorite Theme from Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto will bring to mind the writing style of Clare Fischer for his 2+2 vocal groups. Though still a challenge, especially with the optional vocal soli, this Conniff-themed edition has been adapted from a more difficult version previously performed by Vocalogy on their 2005 Distilled release. The piece opens with a pulsating rhythm section figure as pianist, bassist, and drummer enter one by one. The wonderful moments of tension have been maintained beneath Rachmaninoff's soaringly romantic melody, and the wordless vocal provides an ethereal quality. With the optional soli, this is an Advanced level arrangement. There is room for improvising regardless of whether or not the soli is performed and, with no soli, this is an Advanced Intermediate arrangement.  Included individual piano, bass, and drum parts play from individual parts with chord symbols, slashes, and rhythmic notation. The Promise of Liberty, available for either SATB or unison/2-part treble choir with optional guitar or piano accompaniment, is an adaptation of the sonnet The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus (1883). The sonnet was written to raise money for the construction of the Statue of Liberty's pedestal and has graced the entrance to the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor since 1945. The chorus for this work is adapted from the Lazarus poem, while the verses are new text written by the composer. Duration ca. 3 minutes. The Promise of Liberty Winds blow fierce and foul storms rage. Safe shelter seems a hopeless dream. But in the dark a promise beams, a beacon to a golden age. [Chorus] Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Give me the wretched from your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door, I lift my lamp beside the golden door. So cries the strong heroic woman, raising her arm to light the way. Published by Jane Berry (A0.928298). Kimbra's unique style and use of looping techniques make her music very well suited to accapella arrangements. This arrangement of Settle Down strikes a good balance between being accessible to a wide variety of groups regardless of size or skill level while still holding tons of room for nuance. The voicing is SATB throughout and there is a small section involving homophonic divisi in the sopranos. This arrangement includes a layer of very basic beat boxing/body percussion (very simple vocalization, clap, and snap patterns) that can be done by the full ensemble of by a soloist or small group.

This is the first publication of a new Christmas song, set for SATB a cappella and ideal for community or professional choirs. The words are those of a poem by Leonard Clark (1905 – 1981). He was an English poet who was raised in The Forest of Dean, in the west of England. The Forest became his great passion and inspiration; much of his poetry reflects that upbringing and often relates to nature. In 1972 he published a slim little book of Christmas poems, of which ‘The Birth’ is one. What I like about this poem is its simplicity and clarity – and its narrative development through the verses. It starts with the poet waking in the pre-dawn. He then realizes that it is Christmas Day and in the stillness of that time his mind turns to the birth of Jesus, as traditionally told; tenors and basses start this verse. Then he steps out of time and space and looks through his bedroom window to contemplate the mystery of incarnation; sopranos and altos begin this third verse. And he finishes at the stable, offering devotion to the newborn Lord. This song is also available in a version for voice and piano. Drawn from the same book of poems there is available another new Christmas song, called Singing in the Streets; that one is set for baritone and piano. Ian Calvert.
