I was tasked to think about what songs my grandparents sang to me. Que Sera, Sera, although not a folksong, was the first that came to mind. My maternal grandmother had sung this to me in my younger days. Not long after, my grandmother announced that she intended to sell her house - the very house that I spent most of my growing-up years in. This was followed by many weeks of packing her belongings, uncovering forgotten treasures, and recalling the days of my childhood. Quite aptly, arranging this piece gave me an avenue to express my sentimental thoughts, and say goodbye to an old house filled with so many memories. I hope that both the performer and the listener can be transported back in time, even if just for a few minutes, to reminisce the happier and more carefree days of our lives. Furthermore, let us count our blessings in the present, as the future’s not ours to see. Que Sera, Sera. Inspiration Each year Fall and Winter bring an end to the growing season ushering in a dormant period within the seasonal cycle. Spring and Summer follow with new life and a time when we can again enjoy nature at its fullest. Our own lives mirror similar cycles; sometimes we are faced with events bringing us sadness and despair and other times peace and joy. In the end Jesus and God's great love are our Spring and Summer. This piece attempts to portray this contrast, comparing the seasons to our own lives and reminding us that in the end We Have A Friend who helps us. The Music The piece begins with soloists portraying the seasons of the year and how they relate to our lives. A transition then occurs where we're reminded that when we are down and out, and we need a helping hand, we have a friend in the Lord Jesus.

There’s a beauty found where minds meet that no one person can achieve alone.   So, in search of that beauty, before I even started to work on this piece, I met with the students of Waukesha North High School at the end of their 2023 school year. And we talked. We talked about how life was going. The good and bad. The ups and downs. Things lost. Things found… They shared some laughs and even some tears… The conversations we had were unexpectedly poignant and stuck with me throughout the writing process.   School is a time of great change in our lives and often we are so focused on “getting through†that we don’t really stop to appreciate it until later. This piece celebrates that part of the process. The way we build onto ourselves- acknowledging and accepting that our experiences we have during this time, both good and bad, are crucial to our identity and our ability to move forward in life. They are the cornerstones of who we are and who we become… Inspired by these experiences we shared, I wrote this text. It’s about building a house. The “house†being our self.

The first verse's gentle, flowing feel is the comfort of knowing we've been walking a path together. The second verse, a bit stronger, with the full choir entering, builds this comfort and joy of common experience. The third verse, with its darker text, should also have a more misterioso feel, but don't let it drag. Our parting is approaching. The fourth verse should have a lighter, more sparkling feel, with streams and snowflakes and growing understanding that though what may seem final is not, merely a new way of being. The resoluteness of the fifth verse reflects the strength of knowing that the path we have shared together regardless of our proximity, and gives us strength and joy in knowing that our lives are bettered by our shared experiences. The coda, beginning in measure 95, brings us back to a more settled feel, as we are comforted by the memory of those shared experiences. By the final bars, we arrive at a restful state, comfortable knowing that though time has passed and circumstances have changed, we have been blessed by what we've experienced together.
