BYZANTINE HYMN: O THRINOS TIS ALOSEOS: Lament over the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 (after Simon Karas) arranged for soloist and SATB choirConstantinople (ΚωνταντινοÏπολη=Constantin's City), had been the capital of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) empire from 330 until 1453, when it fell to the Ottomans. It continued then as the capital of the Ottoman empire, and has since 1930 been called Istanbul, the Turkish understanding of the sound of Greek: Stin Poli (= to the City). This Hymn survived in the Greek Orthodox Church and has both a secular and a religious character, as it records the end of the 1100 years glorious era, as well as it is lamenting the religious restrictions the Greek Orthodox Church was subjected to as a result of the Islamic Occupation. Bach, consists in a counterpoint explosion of the harmonies through a melodic construction that sometimes corresponds to one of the themes identifiable in the original piece and sometimes has been entirely reinvented; to facilitate the vocal performance of each of the four voices, Alessio Niccolai adapted a text to the musical sequences: it is made up of a set of ancient Latin proverbs.The execution is not the easiest: a casual pronunciation of Italian is certainly optimal for being able to correctly execute the Latin passages. Furthermore, the organ has its own native difficulty which could be significantly reduced with the performance on the piano (possibly in combination with an instrument that operates in the lower registers of the sound range) because the percussion of the hammers increases the auditory perception of the rhythm.However, the performance is not impossible even for an advanced amateur choir and guarantees an impact on the public.The idea of a transcription for choir of a purely organist work like this, was born in Alessio Niccolai's head from his first listening.

Published by Marilena Zlatanou (A0.1343531). BYZANTINE HYMN (Apolytikion) for St. DIMITRIOS arrangement for SATB choirSt. Dimitrios was born around 280-284 in Thessaloniki (N. Greece), and martyred under Roman Emperor Diocletian in ca 306. He had become a Roman army officer but was incarcerated after converting to Christianity. In prison he met with Nestor, a gladiator set out to fight the famous and feared Lyeos. Dimitrios gave Nestor his blessing who then won the fight, something that enraged Maximilian (then governor of the city and later emperor), and who then ordered the execution of both Nestor and Dimitrios.
