After a retirement due to health concerns, his second Christmas hymn dating from about 1849 was published in The Christian Register. Of it a fellow minister by the name of Morrison wrote, I always feel that, however poor my Christmas sermon may be, the reading and singing of It Came Upon the Midnight Clear are enough to make up for all deficiencies.”Here the tune is NOEL (CMD). The arrangement begins in Eb moving up to F, followed by an expressive (optionally a cappella) section in Dm. After a brief return to F for the final stanza (with a descant limited to top space F) there is a subtle surprise by joy to Em and on to a singable ending in G, with options for second soprano. The voicing range from unison to 2-part and on to 3 and 4 parts, but in a singable, approachable range for choirs of medium ability and only a hint of easily sung divisi.The accompaniment is active but playable and the score suggests a harpsichord voice as the keyboard option. The reggae bass pattern sounds a little bit tricky for not reggae affiliated singers, but is still not too unusual. For better understanding of the rhythm pattern a shaker is added to give the otherwise empty beginning of bar 21 for example. The solo synthesizer part in the middle is divided up to Soprano, Alto and Tenor for more fun and according to the tone range of each voice. The ending has an open chord imitating the question mark of the title, saying: Find your answer (and the ending chord) by yourself!.

Published by Kevin Longley (A0.1019370). Bring His LoveInspiration (below is a note I sent to my sister) Hi Karen! In the fall of last year I started working on a new church anthem for FUMC. Over the years your choir has sung several pieces of mine; so I felt I should do something in return. I quickly got an idea for the music only (sometimes I will get some lyric ideas also, but didn't this time.) By the first of the year I had the basic structure sketched out on paper but then put it aside for Easter Rehearsals. When the pandemic stopped all church choirs I returned to the music and by early May had the score in the computer, close to completion. At that point I still didn't have any lyrics but began feeling that it should be about God's creation. All I could envision was a singer with his arms stretched out to the sun, the ocean, the moon, etc. while singing this piece. So I started searching for a possible prayer that might fit and came upon Canticle of the Son. As I read it through I liked the structure and began sketching out the lyrics. I couldn't help but wonder what our response should be to God's creation. How should we thank him or praise him or take care of it? I then turned my thoughts to FUMC and considered this - what phrase would sum up this churches mission? I almost immediately got Bring His Love. From there the balance of the lyrics fell into place. So attached is the recording and the music. I have no expectations but hope you and the choir enjoy the music. The Music The piece starts with 16th note broken chords in the upper register of the piano which lead to the opening theme. A tenor soloist begins by singing God's praises for all he has given us; ending with the thought How can we thank such kindness?; The answer Bring His Love the B section. At its conclusion we are returned to the opening theme, this time sung by the choir which again leads us to the same questionHow can we thank such kindness?, The answer Bring His Love the B section. A C section is then introduced with a change to a more beat driven accompaniment with the vocals alternating between the upper and lower voices. A return to the opening theme, with minimal chordal accompaniment, features the original soloist but then adds a second voice leading to a duet and a return to the broken chord accompaniment.. Finally the B section,Bring His Love is repeated and concludes in a rousing fashion.. Program Notes The piece could work very well for Earth Day celebrations.

Dia was born 10 weeks early and weighed less than 3 pounds. The doctors told us that she would not live. My father began to pray and certain scriptures came to his mind. Soon, he and my mother began to remind each other of these scriptures. Dia ended up making it. I tell her God must have something planned for her if she survived such a rough start.Performance: The piece opens with a joyful piano solo followed by the higher voices' entrance. These are the mothers exclaiming their joy for the new coming baby. The lower voices then make their statement in their own melody. They are the fathers expressing the excitement of the chlid's birth. The piano takes a turn into the minor key. A soloist represents the doctor delivering the bad news as the rest of the choir makes waiting room sounds. Have people texting or talking on the phone, flipping through magazines, or rustling papers. The alto soloist then repeats the doctor's message. The higher voices began to weep and cry as the father begins to pray. The 3 basses (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) answer in scripture. The father begins to recite the scripture with God and soon the rest of the choir joins. The key modulates to the Major 3rd as the piano solo returns to represent the child living.

I wrote this specifically for the senior students of the Performing Arts. It has many leading parts for both sexes and has a hint of the 60-70 style of writing found in those musicals of the times but modern in context. The story line includes opportunities for many individual performances covering song and dance numbers, group singing, contemporary dance, dramatic interludes and strong comedy parts. This is an original story taking a humorous look at a possible visitation from our space neighbours. The story begins with the arrival of GS2, an ‘Interstellar Space Surveyor’ on its mission to map this part of the Universe. Whilst reporting its position to the home base ‘Niva’, the surveyor informs them that one of the planets (Earth) appears to have intelligent life forms. On receiving this information Niva decides to dispatch a party of college students to study this unique planet, much to the annoyance of GS2 who take umbridge at being appointed, what he calls a Galactic Nanny! Events take a dramatic turn when the surveyor is called away on an ‘emergency rescue mission’ so has to beam the students down to planet Earth, where during transmutation, they are warned not to integrate with the population. It is made up of seven movements: 1) Feet of Jesus; 2) Prayer; 3) Shout; 4) Litany/Sinner; 5) Fire; 6) Angels Wings; 7) Spirituals. It is approximately eighteen minutes in length. It has been performed by church choirs, professional choirs and amateur choirs, as well as university choirs.I was very fortunate to have Anders Paulsson believe in the beauty and significance of Feet of Jesus. He promoted it in Sweden and returned to the United States to perform it in San Francisco. In May of 1997, the Saint Jacobs Chamber Choir under the direction of Gary Graden recorded Feet of Jesus, along with some other original works by Anders Paulsson and arrangements of spirituals. I requested that the soloists be African-Americans, Marymal Holmes and John Williams. The cross-cultural exchange was a vibrant one and proved to be enlightening. The very idea of what was truly considered spiritual in music was put to the question and answered admirably by Gary Graden and his marvelous Swedish choir. The BIS Northern Lights CD was released under the title Spirituals.

Published by Tyler Merideth (A0.782530). Agnus Dei is the tenth movement from a larger work entitled Reconciliation, a set of 12 Latin prayers. Each movement takes it's inspiration from individual postcards containing pictures of St. Michael's Cathedral in Coventry, England. When performed in sequence, Reconciliation can serve as a worship service however, the individual movements also can stand alone. Although the tenth movement in Reconciliation, Agnus Dei was the initial small seed catalyst that grew into the idea to write a 12 movement work. The idea came to me when I first visited Coventry Cathedral and saw a statue entitled Reconciliation by Josefina de Vasconcellos. The statue depicts two figures kneeling in an embrace. What makes this statue so powerful is that the placement of the statue is among the ruins of the original Cathedral after the bombing by German Aircraft in WWII. I immediately sketched an idea for this movement on the bus after my college choir rehearsed in the cathedral. When I returned to the United States, I wrote a rough vocal line and string orchestra accompaniment. The composition then lay dormant for more than a decade with no major changes. It was only this past week (almost fifteen years later) that I rewrote the accompaniment for piano and cleaned up the choral part. The opening unison vocal line can be timeshared among the voice parts. Since it covers a wide range, let the lower voices sing what range they sing well and the higher voices reciprocate. Please feel free to vary the tempo with rubato throughout the piece to allow for proper breath support. Do not be shy leaning into the dissonances found in the suspensions as the ultimate resolution in the grant us peace

However, I realized I had more to share once I joined my high school choir, so I started writing for my choir. I had created several pieces, but this one truly felt like the best out of the bunch. It took a while because I forced myself to write in a way that made me uncomfortable and challenged me, but I believe it turned out pretty well.
