Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976727). It was one of those accidents where you find something useful when you’re looking for something else. While reading on the nature of worship, a particular blog article ended with Adoniram Judson’s early 19th Century baptismal poem, Come Holy Spirit, Dove Divine. The flowing text called out (at least to me!) for a musical setting. Accordingly, some melodic and harmonic ideas began to percolate in my thoughts. However, before getting very far along in writing a tune, there were two surprises in store. First many others had already set the text to music before (with a multitude of tunes) going back to at least 1833. Second, despite being a Baptist for over forty years, I discovered that this hymn has been in the Baptist Hymnal since 1956 yet I have no recollection of every singing it! Well, chagrined at my ignorance, I carried on writing a new melody and harmony for this deserving text. I sought to make it friendly to congregational singers while still containing rich and sing-able harmonies and so aimed for a four-part hymn-style form. However, as I suspect my ignorance of the hymn is a common condition, a fresh and modern tune which would be at home in varied musical styles and have popular appeal was also pursued. The result is a delightful and uplifting tune, easy to sing, with an optimistic and forward momentum, commensurate with the meaning of believers’ baptism, Buried with Him in baptism; raised to walk in new life. The music is flexible in application to many church music styles: praise team and band, choir and organ, congregation and piano, or mix and match to fit your needs. May you find Come, Holy Spirit, Dove Divine, singing a much needed text, a means for your congregation to joyfully join with new believers in celebration of their baptism!

La Mort des Amants, for SATB div., is a piece composed for the French poem La Mort des Amants by Charles Baudelaire, a poem which answers the prompt of a lover telling her love I'm scared of this love, to which the poet replies We will have great memories, and our love will be like mirrors and flames, a constant connection of life and happiness. But there will come a time when you will die, and slowly but surely, my mirror will tarnish and my flame will die away. But at that moment, when my mirror is completely tarnished and my flame is nothing but ashes, an angel will swoop me up and bring me back to you. This piece's suspensions represent the flames, while the constant passing of motifs represent the mirrors. I urge you to enjoy singing this piece.

As time passed, I began to get more involved with the piece. I wanted something that was not only simple, but also calming and reassuring. I express my gratitude to the Vox Coeli Youth Choir of Dogok-dong Cathedral, who first performed this song. Without the voices of Vox Coeli, this song might never have come into existence. Un destino che, ancora oggi, la sorprende a ripensare a quell’amore ma senza indicarle una nuova strada dove poter andare, perché, anche se tutto quell’amore, io l’ho spazzato via…, fa male non pensare a te. Nel ritornello, emerge una speranza (sottolineata dall’apertura della melodia): Io non ti perderò, oltre il tempo e le distanze andrò…; speranza che viene confermata nell’ultima strofa: È chiaro il mio destino … io ti raggiungerò, quando la ragazza capisce anche che non tutto dipende da lei: proverò a gridare e forse sentirai, la mia voce che ti chiama, se vuoi.. The song is about a woman who reflects on a past story. A story that she herself wanted or had to close, but certainly not without regrets; What a woman I will be, if you are not with me and if I will love you more and more.... And she thinks: Strange is my fate, that brings me here…; a fate that compels her, for some reason, to reflect on her past, bringing her back to the moment in which she decided to leave away in silence. A destiny that, even today, surprises her to rethink about that love but without indicating a new way to go, because, even if all that love, I have swept it away ..., it hurts not to think about you. In the refrain, a hope emerges (underlined by the opening of the melody): I will not lose you, beyond time and distance I will go ...; hope that is confirmed in the last stanza: It is clear my destiny ... I will reach you, when the girl also understands that not everything depends on her: I will try to shout and maybe you will hear, my voice calling you, if you want . And hope, become certainty, returns with the repetition, emphasized by the melodic impetus, of the concluding sentence ... not to leave you, anymore.
