Latin.Herrmann Schroeder (1904-1984), one of the most important church music composers of the 20th century, wrote this Latin mass in 1961, i.e. at the beginning of the Second Vatican Council. The Council marked a turning point in the field of church music: Masses in the respective native languages gained more and more acceptance, Gregorian chant faded into the background, stylistic features of popular music were also taken up in church music. Today, about 50 years after the beginning of the Council, one can see a return to Gregorian chant and polyphonic vocal music, and this is why even works such as Schroeder's Latin Missa melismatica arouse great interest again. The work takes the free intonation of the Gregorian chant as a starting-point and is enriched with wide-spun melodic arcs in elaborate polyphony, according to Schroeder's opinion that Gregorian chant and polyphony are particularly suitable for giving expression to the mysticism and irrationality of religious faith in the liturgy. A demanding work for good choirs, duration ca. 16 minutes.

Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed. “Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. A Selection of Christmas Songs from PIAE CANTIONES for SATB choirPIAE CANTIONES is a Swedish-Finnish manuscript, the earliest collection of songs from Scandinavia (1580). In this selection of 14 Christmas-songs from this manuscript, the arrangements are presented as found in the original, with very few and simple additions, in an effort to preserve the authenticity of the period-sound. The order of the songs, the choice of number of verses, the voice-part distribution, the noted tempi and dynamics are my own suggestions - choices intent to hopefully be in accordance to what is known on musical practices during the Medieval and Renaissance periods in Scandinavia, and indeed all-over Northern Europe. The original manuscript contained only the vocal parts and may therefore be performed a cappella, or separately, but I dare suggest that all the songs will benefit greatly and work beautifully accompanied by an early music instrumental ensemble, (ex.: lute and fidle), or an organ, to double the voice parts and improvise bridges between the songs. An Open World, When I Land and And the Wind are three settings of poems from Fletcher LaVallee Bartholomew's collection entitled And the Wind: Gnostic Poems 1945 - 1979. When I Land is duration ca. 5 minutes. Minneapolis native Fletcher Bartholomew spent most of his life in aviation, beginning with a childhood flight in a Curtis Robin in 1929. His work in aviation started with a job as an inspector in an aircraft factory. He went on to become a test pilot in World War II, serving at the South India Air Depot at Bangalore, India. He often spoke later of his experience on the ship to India and the people he met travelling around the subcontinent. He subsequently worked in aviation in Munich, Germany, and in Lima, Peru, before he concluded his career working in airport planning and management. The Queen version did not chart as high in the UK, but did chart in North America in 1996. William Hawley's Catullus Songs are settings of five of the Latin poems of Gaius Valerius Catullus (84-54 B.C.) for SATB voices and piano. The work was commissioned by Michael Paine, and nos. 4 and 5 of the set were premiered by Mr. Paine at the piano with Amanda Hamley, Soprano, Prudence Raper, Contralto, John English, Tenor, and Kevin O'Donnell, Baritone, in St. Anne's Church, London, September 6, 1998, in their World Premiere. The live recording of this premiere has been lost. The audio clip is the opening of the first piece, Vivamus, Mea Lesbia in the Composer's Virtual Instruments Demo.
