A wonderfully unique and emotive choir and ensemble arrangement of 'A Thousand Years' by Christina Perry for SATB divisi, piano, cello and bass. This bespoke score, commissioned by the Wiltshire High Sheriff for the Massed Choir Finale of Uncelebrated Journey. This concert was a wonderful collaboration of local performing arts groups, musicians, dancers and choirs, to celebrate local poet Alfred Williams, also known as 'The Railway Poet'. His story and works were brought to life through drama, dance and music, with an uplifting choral finale combining the voices and talents of Wessex Male Voice Choir, Janice Thompson Performance Trust Choir and vocal harmony group, 'Ten in a Bar'. Kirstie Smith has sensitively re-crafted this beautiful song to reflect the deep love shared between Alfred and his wife Mary, and their enduring love for each other is further painted through the second verse's Shania Twain / Mutt Lange style duet. It is versatile and catchy, and has also been performed by our Vocal Bands with one voice per part, as well as our Kids A Cappella class.This arrangement has a gospel vibe (complete with a shout chorus), but with the groove of the original track provided by the addition of rhythm and bass.VOCAL LAYOUT:The melody, or lead line, is divided amongst the vocal parts to give variety. The B.G (background) parts replicate the instrumental accompaniment of the original track, filling out the arrangement and creating the contemporary texture that is at the heart of Pop A Cappella. When it's performed, it should be heavy on the rhythm and bass! The Rhythm (Beatbox) and Bass should be a feature, and they provide the arrangement with the groove and vibe it needs.The dynamics give an indication which vocal parts should be strongest at any given moment, but changes may need to be made depending on the number / balance of singers, and the strengths of each vocal section. As a general rule, the melody or lead should be strongest, followed by any harmony parts (those with lyrics), followed by any background parts (Mmm's / Dmm's, etc).The full arrangement is scored for SATB including clicking, clapping and Vocal Percussion (beatboxing). When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, written by the Father of English Hymnody, Isaac Watts, in 1707 and later matched with Lowell Mason’s 1824 tune, HAMBURG, has long stood at the forefront of English hymnody.This arrangement, taken from my Passion Week cantata, Wounded, Bleeding, Still Proceeding, allows the full talent-spectrum of the Body of Christ to contemplate His sacrifice and offer their devotion.The first two stanzas feature an alto/soprano duet, set in a minor key with frequent diminished and augmented chords to reflect the despair and loss of a witness to the crucifixion. The entire third stanza, set for SATB chorus, never really moves off the F minor tonic until the end. That, and the relentless pounding of the bass line, ponders the witnesses anguish and our vicarious experience of it through Scripture. So, sing these stanzas sadly – they are sad! When the choir enters, be sure to observe the swelling crescendos/diminuendos as the sorrow and love mingle together.The fourth stanza offers optional congregational participation and may be used to provide a responsorial to the Word of God or a preparation for the Table. The choir sings this stanza in four part harmony as the congregation joins on the melody. It stays in a major key and closely follows the traditional consonances used in Lowell Mason’s harmonization; thus, the choral parts will feel familiar and the congregational melody will flow naturally. Take the text literally (Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.) and sing it firmly, enthusiastically, passionately, but never triumphantly. Sing it as a song of personal devotion to commit all that you have, all that you are, and all that you will ever be, to the one who humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Phil 2:8b) so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Cor 5:21)The music is well within the grasp of any ensemble competent with traditional SATB anthems. The piano/organ accompaniments are straightforward yet very colorful. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross is an unapologetic Christian worship anthem suitable for sacred services, yet does not compromise on artistic expression.The parts provided in this version include a full score, a piano-vocal octavo (which may be performed alone), and organ and timpani/percussion parts. Neither organ or timpani are required but adding either or both provides a deep and rich experience. Parts for reduced orchestra (strings and single winds) are available separately.

Released originally in 2000 on the album Burn to Shine, this song lends itself perfectly to the a cappella genre. The rhythm laid down by Ben's guitar part becomes almost a Doo-wop song when voiced with syllables, and the bass line compliments the upper voices by filling in the space between. The second verse has a country feel with your men in 3-part harmony. Later on, a percussion beakdown gives you the option to do group percussion, body percussion, or fill the void with the talents of your vocal percussionist. This arrangement can be learned easily in just a few rehearsals and would be fitting for a high school or college ensemble. .

This chart reimagines The Band's original song as an a cappella swing tune straight out of the 1940's. The bottom voice thumps along on neutral syllables of your choosing just as an upright bassist would in the big band. If you don't have any singers who can take on this part, an actual bass instrument could be substituted. The guitar accompaniment of the original song is now replaced by complex jazz harmonies and rhythms sung by your upper voices to compliment your soloists. The last 1/3rd of the song has a breakdown that layers and overlaps your voices one by one until they come together for a final build into the last chorus. This section also offers an opportunity for a small quartet to sing an optional harmony part. While this piece is challenging, it offers a unique spin on an old classic that will surely hold your audience's attention if performed well. .

The lyrics are partially anonymous but most published versions include verses that seem to have been added by the arranger of that version. This Epiphany song has similar themes to We Three Kings but is definitely a refreshing change from that well known tune. This fun arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for Baritone soloist, SATB choir, a woodwind instrument, and bass instrument. Included is sheet music for C, Bb, and Eb instruments and a bass line which can be played by many different bass instruments depending on what the group has available. The instrumentalists can transpose their parts to different octaves for ease of playing if necessary. The Baritone soloist should be a well experienced intermediate singer and the bass line is very active at times, but the choir and woodwind parts should be performable by most intermediate groups.
