Feature a soprano soloist or the section on an ethereal descant that elevates the texture to sublime heights.This piece came about for two different reasons. The initial musical idea evolved while I was working on a short study for piano, so the piece was strictly instrumental.The other idea stemmed from a discussion with my friend and mentor Dr Phillip Cooke, about why the word “Alleluia is so commonly used in choral music. Apart from the obvious reasons – “Alleluia being a significant word in the sacred music tradition, and so on – we discussed the multiple possibilities a composer has with a word like that, in the sense that different syllables can be stressed, such as alleluia, alleluia or alleluia.This was something I used as the other structural building block in the composition, and I added “Alleluia as the only word, but with the emphasis moving to different syllables throughout the piece. For me, the setting of a single word like “Alleluia is far from any texts I usually set. The word, however, has a strong anchorage in musical tradition and composers have always set this word in all kinds of different ways.In this composition, I am interested in the word itself, the build-up of the word, the structure of the music, and adding something to the musical tradition of setting this famous word to music.This piece was premiered by the University of Aberdeen Chapel Choir at King’s College Chapel in Aberdeen, Scotland. The performance was conducted by their Director of Chapel and Ceremonial Music, Stuart Muir. – Henrik Dahlgren.

This piece uses the Hail Mary prayer in both Latin and English as lyrics. Unique and beautiful harmonic progressions are used to bring the words of this prayer to life. All breaths and dynamics/dynamic changes are evident and obvious which should make things easier for the choir. Although there is a tempo marking, much of the piece, especially the beginning, should be done freely and chant-like. This song is difficult in the fact that it contains a lot of dissonance between parts, but because of the voice part writing, it should be relatively easy for each part to find their note. If you ever need a break from the soundbyte theology found in so many contemporary Christian lyrics, why not revisit the words of Isaac Watts (1674-1748), who could stretch a single coherent thought across multiple verses of his hymns? Watts was a prolific writer on many subjects, including geography, astronomy, ethics, and psychology. His book on Logic became a standard university text, being used at Oxford for over 100 years. But his greatest desire was to assist Christians in the worship of God and it is his hymns for which he is best remembered today.These old words are here set to new music which represents a blending of three different traditions: First, and most obvious, is the rustic sound of early American shape-note singing. Second is the strong linearity of 13th century Ars Antiqua voice leading, in which each part was more or less independent. And third is my own fondness for mixed meters and sonorities built on fourths and seconds. Yet it all works somehow: these are actually very singable hymns once the choir has acclimated to the style. Most fall comfortably into a simple diatonic language and would present no jarring problems for the listener. Five of the hymns are for standard mixed voices (SATB); one is for men’s voices (TTB); one for women’s (SSA) and the last, a Doxology, is in six parts (SSATTB) with a florid threefold amen. There is admittedly a certain sameness about these settings; perhaps it’s best if they are not all sung in one go, cover to cover. Taken individually, however, there is no reason they couldn’t make for a refreshing change from the usual church anthem, and a group of three or four could easily find a place on a choral recital program.

Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719738). As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have mostly elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. (See below for more comment on the texts in this set.) There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The hymns in this set are Children of the Heavenly Father, Day by Day, Thy Holy Wings, and Beautiful Savior. A note on the texts in this set: Having grown up in a Swedish Lutheran church, the grandson of Swedish/Norwegian immigrants, and currently being choir director of another Swedish Lutheran church, these hymns have a special place for me. This set was originally arranged for my church choir with the first verse of each in Swedish. Being under copyright, permission was obtained to use the more familiar English translations of the first three songs for local use. For this edition, I have opted to create my own texts for the first and third hymns while the second is a translation in public domain. I have also provided a verse in English in lieu of the Swedish for those Nordically challenged. The fourth hymn is not a Swedish melody but for obvious reasons is a mainstay of the Lutheran hymnal. Like the other hymns, the first verse is in Swedish while the other traditional verses are also public domain.

With a slight liberty, I have set the angels' voices for the ladies to sing (SSAA) but the human response is in the men's voices (TBarB). Another liberty is to suggest that the Angels' response He is not here. He is risen as foretold must also be the message of Christians everywhere and in all times. Hence, we end on a glorious three-octave, seven-part ascending scale representing the resurrection in music. One for the more advanced choirs, but not difficult as such. An obvious choice for Easter or for concert use.

Looking for something to add a sense of oriental exoticism to your amateur orchestral/choral concert? This may be what you're looking for! This charming little suite of six dances lasts about 15½ minutes. It consists of a Pavane, Bourée, Sarabande, Allemande, Basse Danse and Galliard, which vary widely in character. As a whole the suite provides some interesting challenges for both performers and listeners. Apart from conventional strings, flute and harp (which can be either pedal or lever) you will need:- One or maybe two Arabian ouds. The parts are playable also on a fretless acoustic guitar. (Needs to be fretless because of the quarter-tones in some of the Arabic modes used.)- A cimbalom (the part can be played on a piano also, with slight modification). You might get away with using a hammered dulcimer but you'd need to make a number of compromises.- A doumbek and a djembe. These beautiful drums are a must for Middle-Eastern or African music. They're fairly easy to find, though finding somebody who can play them properly may take a bit more doing!- Finger cymbals and a gong. These are regular western instruments.- A wind-chime. Anything that produces a nice shimmering spangle of sound will probably do!- A group of singers (SATB). Nothing particularly challenging but see below.The primary oud part, the strings and the singers need to have sufficiently good intonation to pitch quarter tones. These are the exception rather than the rule, but nevertheless play an important part in the character of the music. Apart from this, the music is relatively straightforward and probably playable by any reasonably competent amateur or high school orchestra.In the spring of 2020 I wrote a set of short music tracks for a charity of which I'm a trustee. In order to protect my intellectual property rights in the music, I decided to bring it together into an attractive if not intellectually challenging little suite, hence An Omani Dance Suite. Originally the dances were all in Arabic quarter-tone temperament, but obviously quarter-tones cannot be played easily (if at all) on the flute, harp and cimbalom. So I have made some adjustments but retained the Arabic temperament wherever reasonably possible. I had thought initially of using a santur instead of a cimbalom, but the santur lacks the range and the dynamic capability to be used with a string chamber orchestra. The cimbalom doesn't need to be a concert grand model; in fact it doesn't even need to have dampers.The Omani was something of an afterthought: a musician friend of mine had worked in Oman and commented on how authentically Omani the Basse Danse sounded. First performance March, 2023 by Schola Cantorum of Silicon Valley.One morning in early 2022, after having somewhat unexpectedly lost my two aunts and one of my best friends in the world over the previous year or so, I woke up and this piece, along with some tears, poured out in about 15 minutes. For Us the Living contains echoes of Brahms' German Requiem (Denn alles Fleisch ist wie Gras), Shawn Kirchner's Cornerstone, and Dolly Parton's Light of a Clear Blue Morning (another a song about loss). The words are partly based on a short poem I wrote after my father passed away. I ended to him, Go to sleep, rest a while. So, perhaps obviously, the piece is like a lullaby. What I'm saying is that the purpose of mourning is first to comfort the survivors, and a call to take care of each other -- but also to not just wait for salvation, but to use the memory of our loved ones, to be inspired to pick ourselves up and make ourselves useful while we're on this Earth.Â

Published by Stephanie Daige (A0.796870). This little fugue is one of Bach's most famous and beloved organ works. Re-imagined for double reed choir, it is a challenging and fun setting for this fugue. The different instruments take turns entering with the subject of the fugue, and interplay back and forth with the other instruments. The timbres of the different instruments adds a whole new textural dimension to this already fascinating work by J.S. Bach. I considered the need to breathe for each of these wind instruments, which obviously wasn't an issue for the original version intended for organ. This piece would be appropriate for advanced high school students, college students, or professionals. It would do well in a chamber music concert, in a church, or between acts of a larger ensemble concert, perhaps in another location of the auditorium while a (quiet!) set change is taking place. It would also work well as prelude or lobby music. The duration is just over three minutes (or longer if you prefer to take it slower). Each measure is numbered individually for convenience during rehearsals. I hope you will enjoy performing this piece as much as I have enjoyed arranging it! The influence of Chick Corea is found in the simple repetitive harmonies and driving rhythms. Written for SATB choir with a version for small orchestra, and one for organ, it provides a very interesting and modern setting for a special Christmas performance. Both versions feature the harp. Both versions also include a “vocal rehearsal piano score†which may be copied for your choir members to facilitate rehearsal. This organ version includes a score, organ only part, and harp part as well as the vocal rehearsal score. I couldn't get the organ sound on the computer rendered mp3 to my liking. You may want to listen to the mp3 of the orchestra version (available elsewhere on this site) to get a better idea of the sound. Obviously an organist will make a suitable registration for performance.

It has been used in film and television programs and known to almost everyone in Britain. Skye (also known as “The Isle of Skyeâ€) is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides. With an area of about 640 square miles, the island is about sixty miles long and lies close to the Scottish mainland.  The boat in the song (“Speed bonny boatâ€) refers to a small sailing ship that in 1746 “carried the lad who was born to be king†to the Isle of Skye. The lad in question was Prince Charles Edward Stuart known affectionately as “Bonnie Prince Charlie.†The song also refers to the Battle of Culloden of April 1746, the last ever battle on British soil, fought between the British Army and the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie.  In June 1746 and disguised as a maid-servant, Charles was secretly transported from the Hebridean island of Benbecula to the more southerly Isle of Skye. This is the event to which the song refers. The Skye Boat Song has its roots in a traditional Gaelic melody. The lyrics in this arrangement are the familiar ones written in the 1870s by Sir Harold Edwin Boulton. This is an easy SATB arrangement, with all vocal parts well within range and difficult leaps avoided. There are no divisi sections or solos, though can obviously create solos if you want. The keyboard part also avoids technical hurdles. Your singers will surely enjoy this joyful melody, with its contrasting verse and attractive counter-melodies. Vocal ranges are Soprano: D4 – D5; Alto: A3 (only once) – B4; Tenor: D3–D4; Bass: G2-B3.
