A seminal jazz ballad selection, Niema (also known as Naima) was written by John Coltrane, with lyrics by Jon Hendricks and arranged by Lenora Helm Hammonds. The 2nd chorus features a vocalese with the arranger’s lyrics, written to pianist Tommy Flanagan’s solo from the original recording. The soloist for the vocalese can be soprano, high alto or a high tenor and is quite harmonically and rhythmically challenging. The arrangement features, some section unison features, dense chorus harmonies, and a vocal bass line in the bridge for the baritone and bass voices. Notes: The first chorus is performed by the complete ensemble, followed by the vocal solo. An instrument solo is also optional as an additional chorus separating the vocal solo and the return to the top of the form with the return of the ensemble (as heard in the demo.) The demo depicts the vocalists performing with piano, bass and drum as a rhythm section supporting the vocals. However, the arrangement can be sung a cappella for advanced groups or with just piano accompaniment.

Despite never leaving Portugal, Seixas collaborated with Domenico Scarlatti, who was the chapel master of the Portuguese court. Seixas is considered the most important Portuguese baroque composer of keyboard music. Although none of his original works survived, he is credited with composing approximately 700 toccatas. The lyrics are partially anonymous but most published versions include verses that seem to have been added by the arranger of that version. This Epiphany song has similar themes to We Three Kings but is definitely a refreshing change from that well known tune. This fun arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for Baritone soloist, SATB choir, a woodwind instrument, and bass instrument. Included is sheet music for C, Bb, and Eb instruments and a bass line which can be played by many different bass instruments depending on what the group has available. The instrumentalists can transpose their parts to different octaves for ease of playing if necessary. The melody is mainly in the soprano part, apart from verse 2 where it is taken by the tenors. The arrangement moves from a melody line (which could be sung by a soloist rather than all the sopranos) over 'do do' backing, to a polyphonic second verse, before moving into a homophonic structure with minor splits in the alto and tenor parts and finally full eight part harmony in the fourth verse. This arrangement is for average- to larger-sized SATB a cappella groups, and sits at a intermediate-advanced difficulty for high school/collegiate groups. This arrangement is similarly for the a cappella group looking to explore cluster chords while fulfilling a slow, but moving ballad slot for your song set. While there isn’t a vocal percussionist part in the score, there is a slight amount of body percussion involved in the second verse, which can be replaced by a vocal percussionist if desired.This arrangement features incredible harmonies, including many cluster chords that sound full and rich; these cluster chords are often met with two- and occasionally three-part splits within each voice part, which makes it crucial for each part to be solid. If your group does not have enough members to satisfy the three-part splits, one of the notes can be omitted for a similar sounding product. Additionally, there are two solo opportunities featured, each with the exact same range. If only one solo is desired, the soloist can simply follow the melody.
