COWKEEPER'S TUNE (TV's Woodentops theme) - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLEFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This arrangement is taken from a String Nonet version (2 first violins, 2 second violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos and 1 double bass).It makes a great quartet for a guitar ensemble of modest ability, and those with more experience will be able to generate a wonderful soundscape with a rich clear overall sound.The pitch range of the original has to be compressed onto the pitch range of a guitar ensemble and I’ve achieved this by raising the lower voices, rather than altering the top voice, where the piece calls for a lighter texture. The dynamics of the original are retained in my arrangement, but the fingering is left to the players... Playing the lower parts up the neck will give a rich, cello-like, sound, but a first position performance will be robust and will use many familiar guitar shapes.This is a charming, gentle, pastoral piece and the sweet sound of the guitar suits it well.Those UK players of a certain age might just remember that this music introduced The Woodentops, a children’s string-puppet TV series which ran in black and white from 1955 till 1957, and was regularly repeated until 1973.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

FANTASIA UPON A CABBAGE - GUITAR QUARTET/large ensembleFor Classical or Acoustic GuitarPerfect for School Music Teachers and for adults with a sense of the ridiculous...Derek Hasted writes This really does need a bit of explanation. Well, more than a bit...As a Guitar Teacher I often have to teach beginners how to read music, and of course the seven names of the musical notes can be made to spell words. Like CABBAGE.This, then, is a little piece of kitchen-based nonsense, cooking up a rather unappetising dish comprising cabbage, egg, beef and a lot, lot more cabbage. Iâ??ve arranged it (if that is the word) to include nods to the renaissance and baroque periods.The scores contain mark-ups to show where a particular player has an item of food in their motif.As well as EGG, youâ??ll find some GEG (thatâ??s scrambled egg) and a BAD EGG (and some sad music). Youâ??ll also find that the recipe includes a helping or two of BEEF.Bach comes in for a special mention, as thereâ??s a fugue-like section where the subject comes in a fifth away from the starting key (which Iâ??ve loosely interpreted as being a recipe in a foreign language) and thereâ??s some stretti (well, just about) at the end, when the fugue subjects overlap a tiny, tiny amount. And we also pay homage to the pedal section of an organ, where the CABBAGE subject comes in down low at half the speed of the original.The final, jazzy, chord at the end contains seven notes that collectively spell CABBAGE.Guitar 4 is supplied in treble and bass clefs - either or both will work in a large ensemble.So there are lots of teaching points, lots of things to ask the audience to listen out for, and a lot of mischief in a compact piece.The musical refrain CABBAGE is not the greatest motif to work with, but on reflection, when you have this much cabbage, itâ??s much better to listen to it than have to eat it...I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. SUCCESSION TV THEME - for 4 GUITARS/Large EnsembleDerek Hasted writes Originally set in the key C minor, this quirky, short, TV theme tends to prove something of an ear worm with those who hear it. Perfect to close the first half of a concert, then!I've moved the piece into the key of E minor, partly to make best use of the guitar neck, and partly to allow open string harmonics to recreate effortlessly the octave jumps in the original piano chords.I’ve added fingering where I hope it will help. The main theme moves from player to player, so that no single player has extended runs at speed and the audience will enjoy an amazing stereo effect too. The dynamics show where the tune needs to be brought out.The original is very fast, and you may find, as I do, that it breathes better on guitar if taken 10% slower, with the bonus of making the piece just that little bit longer too.I have also arranged this for guitar duet, in an arrangement that is slightly more demanding - find it from my website below.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. PORTSMOUTH - 4 GUITARS or LARGE ENSEMBLEFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes Although this piece was made famous by Mike Oldfield, it first appeared in John Playford’s “The Dancing Master†in 1701, and also found fame in the hands of Ralph Vaughan Williams. My arrangement starts with a slow, teasing, introduction, and introduces the famous melody very slowly and gently. “What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor†also makes a few appearances before we let the brakes off and burst into the tune that many people know. The music isn’t hard to play, and each line has some music interest, though only Guitar 1 has to venture up the neck. It’s ideal for a mixed ability ensemble, and runs at nearly five minutes, to make a substantial concert item that builds up and up. This arrangement was a firm favourite with the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra (HAGO) and their audiences. I hope you enjoy this piece as much as HAGO did!

To do that, Iâ??ve moved the key down one tone to make the keys in this piece familiar ones. My arrangement will suit a mixed ability ensemble from early intermediate to intermediate. Guitar 4 has the bottom string tuned down to D, and thereâ??s a bass clef version of the same line to suit a normally tuned bass guitar or upright bass. You can have one or both lines in your performance.Iâ??ve deleted a tiny piece of repetition near the end - the words change in the original but the music doesnâ??t - as an instrumental there was too much of the same phrase! The piece finishes with a final chord instead of a fade to nothing, as it works so much better in concert.The resulting piece still runs for four and a half minutes. PATAPAN - traditional carol - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLE For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.There are TWO ARRANGEMENTS in this one edition.Derek Hasted writes This Burgundian Carol, first published in 1720, usually has four verses in the French version and three in the English. This arrangement has three verses, all in slightly different styles.The melody and the onomatopoeia in the lyrics are together meant to symbolise the fife (“Ture-lure-luâ€) and the drum (“Pata-pata-panâ€).In both arrangements Guitar One has melody, and it fits nicely in a mix of IV and V position. There is no fingering, because your ensemble might want to choose between two different approaches...A less experienced ensemble might prefer to venture up the neck just to reach for the A and B notes, and return to the first position as soon as possible...A more experienced group might want to stay up the neck to get a more rounded tone throughout. Depending on your choice of fingering, slurs might be possible to improve the flow.There are two versions of the lower parts. In the first arrangement, in “SATB†style, Guitar 4 plays the bass; Guitar 3 provides, in the three verses, percussion, a choral countermelody, and finally a Hurdy-Gurdy style drone; Guitar provides a countermelody.In the second arrangement, the roles rotate at the end of each verse, so that all the accompanying players have three very different verses to play. Guitar 1 stays with the tune, because in a mixed ability ensemble, moving the tune about tends to highlight any weaknesses. This arrangement highlights the strengths!Percussion (the X-headed notes) works well if you tap the guitar near the bridge to get a deep bass drum.At the end, the brave amongst you can shout “Patapan†to bring the piece to a surprise conclusion...I hope you enjoy this piece!
