Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811269). Bach's Three-Part Inventions, BWV 787-801 (also known as Sinfonias) were composed in Köthen, Germany around the year 1720 for harpsichord. Each work is characterized by the contrapuntal working of a single melodic line. The fifteen short pieces cover eight major and seven minor keys.Bach included with the collection of the Two and Three-Part Inventions these instructions to students of music:Forthright instruction, wherewith lovers of the clavier, especially those desirous of learning, are shown in a clear way not only 1) to learn to play two voices clearly, but also after further progress 2) to deal correctly and well with three obbligato parts, moreover at the same time to obtain not only good ideas, but also to carry them out well, but most of all to achieve a cantabile style of playing, and thereby to acquire a strong foretaste of composition.Ralph Sauer has brilliantly arranged these great works for Three Trombones in one single collection (he first arranged these in the early 1970s in several volumes with different publishers and are now out of print) and is appropriate for advanced performers.

One of that set was called Roadside Inn, which I have arranged for Instrumental Trio. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of contrasts and constant shifts between dynamics, articulations, and themes. There are interpretive marks in every measure as each part independently adds to the stunning polyphonic weaving. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. A great piece to show your musicianship as a group. A new set of 3 beautiful sounding Corelli Trio Sonatas for Trombone Trio transcribed by L.A. Philharmonic Principal Trombonist, Ralph Sauer. Opus 1, No. 2 in D major, Opus 1, No. 3 in G major, Opus 4, No. 1 in C major. Each trio of about 8 minutes in length is in a 4 movement structure of Slow- Fast-Slow-Fast. There are many great pure chorale harmonies, plus each 2nd movement has a contrapuntal style to it, which is great for building up keen ears and ensemble sense. These sonatas are of moderately advanced difficulty, in tenor and bass clefs. Endurance is not a problem because of the masterly editing of Mr. Sauer, who is legendary for his transcription skills. These trios can be performed by most College/University students and some keen high schoolers. Range goes from a pedal A for Bass Trombone to one high D for the 1st part, but most of the tessitura is in a normal range.

In Memoriam: A Chorale After Bruckner was composed in memory of Murray Crewe, former Bass Trombonist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Murray was my private trombone teacher at Duquesne University where he maintained a large studio of private trombone students and directed the trombone choir. During my lessons with him and in trombone choir rehearsals, Murray was contagiously positive and encouraging with a sense of humor all his own. He was also an artist of immense depth and sensitivity who daily sought to create and encounter moments of beauty in the world. Some of my greatest musical memories of Murray are of his leading the trombone choir in playing transcriptions of Brucknerâ??s choral motets. There are obvious parallels between the voice and the trombone, and Murrayâ??s artistry combined with Brucknerâ??s profound compositions created a deeply moving experience for me as a young musician. I wrote this piece with those memories in my mind. The sonorities are intentionally vocal, and performance of the piece should be approached in a similarly sustained and expressive style. The first trombone part remains rather high without rest; it may be played by either a tenor or alto trombone depending on player preference.

This easy arrangement for trombone trio has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students because of the ease imposed on the piece. It is often performed at wedding ceremonies slowly and reverently, challenging the effect suggested by Bach in his original score for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuous bass. This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works.

Therefore, it is great for school, church, lessons, or with friends in a room.This easy, lively arrangement is divided into five 8-bar sections: Intro, Verse 1 with accented rhythms, Chorus with a jazzy walking bass line, Verse 2 with fuller harmonies, (all sections repeated) then Coda.The Melody goes back and forth between Parts I and II and stays within the range of 1 octave. Part III is super easy and just gently rocks back and forth on 4 repeated half notes (minims) to help anchor the beat and maintain harmony and key while the other parts move around and syncopate.This song teaches light syncopation with a tie into Beat 3. Great harmonies are created when all 3 parts are together. But you won't think about that because this version is so much fun to play!
