A delightfully light and celebratory arrangement of 'He We Come A Wassailing' arranged here for three standard Bb Clarinets in a swung style. Please take a moment to listen to the mp3 audio recording as you'll really hear how this trio works perfectly for the cheeky joyous nature of the clarinet. This is ideal for mixed ability trio groups (so the less confident player - who prefers lower notes!) can opt to take the lower part, a more confident player can take middle, and the most confident can take the upper part. Lower part range = low F below the stave to G (2nd line up) so all low register, Middle part range = D above the stave to C# below the stave, Top part range = Top D above the stave - C below the stave.The Wassail Swing is one of seven original pieces from www.masquerade-music.co.uk 's 'Christmas Trios' book, and is also available in SAT/AAT Sax, and Flute trio editions. The book includes 'O come O come Emmanuel' - a haunting arrangement (sounds EPIC in a church/big reverb etc!), I Saw Three Ships (more challenging as mostly in 7/8 time).The Youtube video link given shows all seven pieces from the 'Christmas Trios' book. These are to be viewed as a guide (though in a variety of formats...flutes, clarinet, sax editions etc).Â

As each piece comprises only one or two pages the players will be able to read directly from the scores, without the need for separate parts (which also gives the advantage of being able to see what the others are playing. This is part of a series of fifteen easy clarinet trios (for 1st or 2nd year students) based on traditional English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish folk songs. I was specially requested to write these arrangements by a clarinet teacher in Italy. The range does not go above the soprano top C (2 ledger lines above the treble clef) and the settings avoid the difficult transition a to b between the chalumeau and clarino ranges. The key signatures (as written) range from two flats to three sharps. The entire collection is available here as a set for $22.00 (15 easy clarinet trios) or, if preferred, the individual pieces are also available separately (at $2.50 each). As each piece comprises only one or two pages the players will be able to read directly from the scores, without the need for separate parts (which also gives the advantage of being able to see what the others are playing. The pieces are as follows: 1. The Waxie's Dargle (also known as The girl I left behind me) 2. Scotland the brave 3. The Ash Grove 4. Men of Harlech 5. The Belle of Belfast city (I'll tell my ma when I get home) 6. Donkey Riding (Were you ever in Quebec) 7. Blow away the morning dew 8. Come live with me 9. The king's joy (When the King comes home again) 10. Drunken Sailor 11. The Oak and the ash (A North country Maid) 12. Spanish Ladies 13. The Mermaid 14. And she shall walk in Silk Attire 15. Capriccio      This lively capriccio features a bouncy melody that is imitated in canon through the other two clarinets. Then the descending fourth motive introduced early is developed in a series of succinct statements. The movement ends with a three part canon with each clarinet racing against the others.  II. Elegy*     After someone leaves our lives there are lingering reminders of the pain of their absence combined with the sweetness of the happiest memories. The middle section represents a flashback to happier times yet the sustained notes hint that something is not quite right. In the end the melody is unable to resolve as it should yet those around it continue on their way.     *Please note that the bass clarinet player should play soprano clarinet for this movement only.  III. Frenetic      This piece would not have been written were it not for the prodding of my friend and fellow composer Felix Rivera. I would joke with him that he may never write a piece not based on tritones and he quipped back that I may never write a piece for clarinets. I decided it was time to fix not having a clarinet selection in my repertoire and this work is the result. One cannot often find the origin of a folk tune or a definitive form, and bewares of modern arrangements (including mine!) The REFRAIN is Kolomeike, кoлoмийкa, a very quick duple-time dance tune, with a variable scale, popular in Ukraine for weddings and other festive occasions, often led by a clarinet with soft reed and many smears. EPISODES are mostly sad love-songs: A. Чом ти не прийшов: a girl sings Why did you not come and meet me in the moonlight? Wouldn't your mother let you? Dorian mode. B. Slow Waltz: I have seen this with G major accompaniment, but I have used G mixolydian: a popular mode in Ukraine.The bass has the melody. C. O, in the cherry orchard Ой, у Вишневому Саду. A girl (Clarinet) sings that she begged her boyfriend to take her home from the orchard, as it was late, but he took a different girl. Mother knows what has been going on, but is sympathetic. G minor. D Tanietz: a very fast dance tune led by the Clarinet: I do not know its name. E a reprise of the Cherry Orchard. F.Ти ж мене підманула You tricked me and let me down. I have seen and heard this sung cheerfully and very fast, but its lyrics are really sad. A young man complains that his girlfriend never turns up for their dates. Players will choose a tempo. The basic melody was attributed to Semen Klimovski. Here, the Bass sings the melody. DURATION: 11 minutes. INSTRUMENTATION: Two Bb CLarinets, Bass Clarinet.

An interesting snippet of information I happened upon about old Mozart pertaining to this piece, he was attending a concert series in Vienna in 1781 and wrote to his father Leopold that nothing is played but Handel and Bach!. So after studying works by the Bach family he wrote this piece, naturally he composed the fugue first in his head (as you do!!), then wrote it down while he was thinking about the Prelude!! So here is the Fugue for three competent Clarinettists, I hope you enjoy playing it in a generous acoustic!!

Bremner's original 1780 London publication and also arranged by Hugo Riemann, and again wrongly attributed to Giovanni Pergolesi.It is actually made up of 3 different pieces: Gallo's 2nd Trio Sonata in Bb. Mvts I and III, and Trio Sonata No 8 in Eb.All 3 Gallo mvts were used by Igor Stravinsky in the 3rd mvt. Scherzinoof his Neo Classical Pulcinella Suite. There is few bars joining the 3 mvts...one is Stravinsky's own, one is from a Pergolesi Opera.The Pulcinella Suite for small chamber orchestra and 3 vocalists which was derived from the ballet, was written in 1922 and has no vocal parts. But even though Stravinsky used Pergolesi's(which were in this case Gallo's) melodies and bass lines with little change, he managed to put his own unmistakable stamp on the music through his use of modern harmonies and occasional rhythmic modifications.I have used transcriptions of the original pieces, but have transposed them into the keys used by Stravinsky. I have included the original Pergolesi Aria as the first link, and a scale passage of my own for the second.My arrangement is in the same format as Stravinsky's so is a complete work.I have another upload with the 3 separate movts in their original keys.This arrangement is interesting to play and  do not sound too dissimilar to Stravinsky's final work.It is arranged for clarinet trio (2 Bb and bass)https://youtu.be/PMC-84MmuYw

There are interpretive marks in every measure as each part independently adds to the stunning polyphonic weaving. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. A great piece to show your musicianship as a group.
