This arrangement of Scottish traditional songs includes three iconic Scottish melodies: Bluebells of Scotland, Turn Again, Thou Fair Elisa, and Annie Laurie. The long soaring melodies and bagpipe-style drones of these songs work beautifully for horn quartet. These arrangements are ideal for weddings, preludes, funerals, and any recital.The origins of Scottish traditional music date back to at least the late Middle Ages, with songs passed down orally until many of the songs were published in collections in the 18th century. Scotland’s National Poet Robert Burns (1759-1796) famously collected Scottish folk songs and adapted many of the melodies to include his poetry. Today, elements of Scottish traditional music are found in epic film soundtracks such as Braveheart, Mary Queen of Scots, and Rob Roy, as well as classical symphonic works including Mendelssohn’s Scottish symphony. Bluebells of Scotland was most famously used by Arthur Pryor in his piece Blue Bells of Scotland for solo trombone and band. There are a few different versions of the melody Turn Again, Thou Fair Elisa, but the melody Robert Burns used (as published in the 1903 edition of The Songs of Robert Burns) is arguably the most beautiful. The timeless song Annie Laurie describes the ill-fated romance between Scottish soldier William Douglas and Annie Laurie, the young daughter of a British aristocrat. The music is often attributed to Lady John Scott (1810-1900).

The Praludium and Postlude were originally written for keyboard. Bruckner was probably the finest organ improvisor of his time, but he wrote very few pieces for that instrument. The Chorale is adapted from an early quartet for men's voices c. 1848. Fortunately these three pieces work perfectly together for four horns. Bruckner's unmistakable harmonies, counterpoint, and drama are all present in this work. All attempts were made to create an edition that accurately reflects Bruckner's music as if he had originally written it for horn quartet. Enharmonic spellings were retained, and the articulations and dynamics were adjusted to both reflect Bruckner's intentions while making the music appropriate for live performances. Praludium, Chorale, and Postlude for Four Horns is a perfect piece for recitals, festivals, weddings, and any other ceremony.

LCH Music #6474671. Published by LCH Music (A0.919037). Enigmatic and highly influential composer Erik Satie wrote over three dozen piano works between 1884 and 1920. Some pieces were outlandish such as his Vexations which repeats 840 times and lasts up to 35 hours, and other pieces were simple with absurd titles like his Three Pieces in the Form of a Pear. Perhaps his best-known piece is his first Gymnopédie for piano that was completed in 1888. The piece consists of a simple accompaniment with a long soaring melody above it. The melody is instantly recognizable and was featured in films including My Dinner with Andre, and The Royal Tenenbaums; video games; and on albums by Blood Sweat & Tears, and Gary Numan. It is also found on most Top-50 lists of All-Time Classical Music Favorites. Satie also wrote two additional Gymnopédie with the collection of all three first published in 1898. Claude Debussy famously orchestrated two of them that same year. The long soaring melody and calm mood of this piece works beautifully for horn quartet. Each member gets the melody for an enjoyable performance. This piece is ideal for weddings, worship services, funerals, and any recital.

This arrangement is in Concert Eb which puts the horn in Bb Major containing two flats, Bb & Eb. The highest note in the Horn 1 part is top line F. The lowest note in Horn 4 is Eb below the staff. Horn 4 is written in bass clef. Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a British hymn traditionally associated with seafarers, and was first written in 1860 by William Whiting (1825—1878), an Anglican churchman from Winchester. According to his recount, Whiting grew up near the ocean and, at the age of thirty-five, had felt his life spared by God when a violent storm nearly claimed the ship he was travelling on. This instilled in him a belief in God's command over the rage and calm of the sea. The music associated with it was written by John B. Dykes (1823—1876), another Anglican clergymen and composer of the music for nearly three hundred hymns. This edition comes in several arrangements for multiple ensembles. At the moment of the first edition it contains the original choir version (with the 1861 lyrics), a voice and piano version, and arrangements for string, cello, trombone, horn, woodwind, brass, and saxophone quartets. The cello, trombone, and horn quartet versions are slightly more elaborated. Additional versions will be created upon request, contact me to know more. This arrangement is dedicated to Martin Smith.
