Published by David McKeown (A0.1112417). The most popular of Scott Joplin’s piano rags during his lifetime, The Maple Leaf Rag was published in 1899. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films. This version for Euphonium and Piano includes all four sections of the original composition. The tempo in recorded versions varies widely between 72 and 126, so the marking of 92 is a suggestion only. Musicians at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The overall performance time is around four minutes. An original 21st Century piece which fuses influences from nearly every genre and period.  The Nocturne showcases the performer's tone quality, particularly in the upper register. The melody has hints of Contemporary Classical, Post-Romantic, and New Age, but overall is Minimalist. The Piano Accompaniment in this section is entirely a 2 chord ostinato in the Right Hand only.  The Rondo has continuity from the Nocturne in that the Piano Accompaniment continues with Right Hand only chords. This section is heavily rhythmic with West Indian/Caribbean rhythms and some pulsing Rock influence, yet still with characteristics of Contemporary Classical.  This Nocturne and Rondo makes a great Audition piece to show your musicianship. One of the better known nocturnes, this piece has a rhythmic freedom that came to characterize Frédéric Chopin's later work. The piece is 85 measures long and in 6/4 meter is written in ternary form; after the primary theme, the secondary theme starts in measure 19, followed by a modified version of the primary theme in measure 70. The opening section moves into a contrasting middle section in the same key signature, which flows back to the opening material in a transitional passage. The reprise of the first section grows out of this, followed by a Picardy third ending.This arrangement for C or Bb Euphonium (or also trombone) with piano accompaniment reflects faithfully the original and is suitable for any purpose and occasion.

With her short attention span and her interesting ideas, the constantly shifting tonality or the interesting resolutions act accordingly. The form gives a little bit of predictability but even then, you never get what you expect the first time around… or the second.

Mr. Sauer's arrangement incorporates three of them: Intermezzo, Rêverie and Sérénade. The Petite Suite was dedicated to the Belgian Countess Louise de Mercy-Argenteau, who was a supporter of Borodin and his music. After Borodin's death in 1887, Glazunov orchestrated the Suite. The music has that Eastern flavor so indicative of Borodin's melodies, mysterious, lyrical and subtle. Advanced performers will enjoy this work of almost 7 minutes which has been so beautifully arranged by Mr. Sauer.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810821). En Bateau (Sailing) is the first movement from Debussy's four movement Petite Suite written around 1886 for four-hand piano duet. Debussy was inspired to write this movement from the poem Fêtes galantes by Paul Verlaine. The Suite has been transcribed for every imaginable instrumentation and is one of the composer's most playable works from a technical standpoint. This lovely 3-minute arrangement for Euphonium and Piano accompaniment by Ralph Sauer is appropriate for moderately advanced performers. Solo part is in bass clef only.
