It was released as a single that peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the US, the single was certified Gold on 6 September 1974 by the RIAA. Many consider this to be Elton John's greatest song. The melody fits well in the tessitura of the solo instrument and features some challenging rhythms for sight-reading. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811241). The Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56, one of Brahms' greatest creations was written and premiered in 1873. It consists of a theme and eight variations, plus a grand finale. It was written in two forms, one for two pianos and the more well-known orchestral version.There is a musicological controversy as to whether the theme is actually from the pen of Haydn or another mystery composer. Some are now referring to it as the Saint Anthony Variations. Nevertheless, this 18-minute work by Brahms is a magnificent work of genius.Not to be outdone, Mr. Sauer has created his own masterpiece of this work, arranged for virtuoso artists of the Euphonium (solo part is in bass clef) and Piano. It will surely become a classic in the repertoire.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811242). Originally titled Sospiri d'Amour, this instrumental miniature, Sospiri (Sighs), Opus 70 was originally intended as a companion to Salut d'Amour. Elgar composed this heartfelt work in 1914 for string orchestra, harp, and organ, just before the outbreak of WWI. It is a bleak adagio of thoughtful intensity that he dedicated as a tribute to W.H. Reed, a dear friend, and the Concertmaster of the London Symphony. The work has been described most beautifully by Michael Kennedy who wrote, It is, though short, a major work of grave beauty, an epitome of Elgar’s ability to express nostalgic regret.Ralph Sauer has arranged this beautiful work for Euphonium and Piano (part is in bass clef) as an homage to the great English master. The work is about 5 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.

A very famous aria (Ombra mai fu) from XerxesSuitable for any venue requiring meditative music. Excellent choice for a recital encore. Xerxes Xerxes is, in fact, an opera seria in three acts by Handel. Moreover, Handel conducted the premiere performance in London in 1738. Handel casts the opera in Persia in 470 BC. The part of Xerxes was indeed originally sung by a soprano castrato. Nowadays, the part is generally sung by a mezzo-soprano or conversely a counter-tenor. In the first place, Xerxes sings an opening aria, Ombra mai fu to a plane tree. Handel sets this aria to one of his most truly famous melodies. Although many refer to it traditionally as Handel’s Largo, Handel has, on the contrary, clearly marked Larghetto in the score. Handel Background George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) was born in Germany but eventually became a British citizen. Nonetheless, he was a famous Baroque composer. In fact, he became famous for his operas, oratorios, anthems, and organ concertos. Handel studied music and, by and large, worked as a composer in Germany and Italy before moving to London. On the whole, Handel was very familiar with the contemporary music of Italy and Germany. Career in England It is essential to realize that Italian opera was all the rage in England at the time. Moreover, Handel was really good at writing them. Therefore, he started not one but three opera companies in England. Alexander's Feast was a huge success in 1736, but Handel began composing English choral works. After success with the Messiah in 1742) he certainly never again wrote an Italian opera. Consequently, he died in 1759, a treasured genius. Accordingly, the English government gave him full state honors at his funeral. Hence, he is buried in Westminster Abbey in London. Legacy Music historians agree that Handel was in general one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era.  To demonstrate, his works such as the Messiah, Water Music, and Music for the Royal Fireworks remain consistently popular up to the present time. He especially composed the coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest for the coronation of George II. Nevertheless, it has specifically been performed at every succeeding British coronation since. His oratorio Solomon has by all means also continued to be prevalent. As a matter of fact, Sinfonia from act 3 was featured the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Handel was particularly prolific. To enumerate, he wrote over forty operas.  Since the late 1960s, we have expressly experienced a revival of baroque music. Similarly, we have especially seen a pique of interest in historically informed musical performances. Since his death in 1779, interest in Handel's music has all in all, expanded. Â

It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five. The Five The Five certainly rejected Western musical influences. However, he did compose a small number of works for the piano, Erinnerung (Memory) being the most well-known. Written around the year 1868, it falls chronologically between the first and second symphonies. The music is poignant, mysterious, grand and harmonically rich. It is appropriate for moderately advanced performers and is about 5-6 minutes in length and would make a perfect piece for a recital or jury. Le Rossignol or the Nightingale is originally a vocalise for Soprano solo from Saint-Saën's incidental orchestral music for the play, Parysatis written in 1902. This 4 minute work is all about mood. For this arrangement, Mr. Sauer transposes into the key of C, which lays perfectly for all of the bird-like calls that are in phrases which are slurred. The music has a lot of ad lib. tempo sections which gives the performer plenty of time to create that magic call of the Nightingale. Early writers thought it was the female that sang, but in fact it is the male. The Nightingale usually sings at night or just before dawn when other birds are silent and has a strong spontaneous song with an impressive range of trills and whistles.

Four Pieces from Opus 11 arranged for Euphonium and Piano by Ralph Sauer are originally from a group of seven pieces for solo Piano written between 1917 and 1918, except for movement 3, Il pleure dans mon coeur comme il pleut sur la ville (It rains in my heart like it rains in the city) from 1910. The writing is very expressive and dark, possibly evoking the mood of Europe in the throes of great upheavals and the Great War. This item is now available with parts in bass and treble clef. About 12 minutes in length, these four movements are appropriate for advanced performers.

Flight of the Bumblebee is an orchestral interlude written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov for his opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan, composed in 1899–1900. Its composition is intended to musically evoke the seemingly chaotic and rapidly changing flying pattern of a bumblebee. Despite the piece's being a rather incidental part of the opera, it is today one of the more familiar classical works because of its frequent use in popular culture. The piece closes Act III, Tableau 1, during which the magic Swan-Bird changes Prince Gvidon Saltanovich (the Tsar's son) into an insect so that he can fly away to visit his father (who does not know that he is alive). The duration of this is 2.07 minutes and it is a difficult level piece.
