Â All four of the parts are equally important. Â While Trombone 1 has the melody, and could be used as a solo piece, the arranger takes great care in ensuring every note across the quartet matters. Â The first half of the arrangment is reminiscent of the Gene Wilder classic, featuring a haunting chorale style. Â After a first trombone chromatic feature, the arranger switches gears, taking this classic melody and adding a happy spin to it. Â As the piece progresses, the melody is played with more and more until building to a satisfying finale! Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955716). This trombone quartet arrangement of Hector Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique contains all the well-known themes of the full orchestral symphony. The beginning is identical with the original, but then proceeds immediately to the March to the Scaffold of the fourth movement. The famous idée fixe of the symphony is first heard at measure 72, and this is followed by other themes from the first movement. The adagio at measure 164 re-creates the pastoral duet of the symphony’s third movement. As indicated on the charts, the first trombone should play this section offstage (as for the oboist in the original), while the others remain on stage. If this is not possible, then the first trombone should play this section muted. This very reflective interlude is followed by my personal favorite, the wondrously jolly waltz from the symphony’s second movement. This is followed by the Witches’ Round Dance, a sort of fugue, which leads to the dies irae – played in four octaves here, with a high Eflat to test your first trombonist! The idée fixe is stated once again before the arrangement concludes in the same way as the original symphony.This is a light-hearted arrangement that is not intended to re-create exactly the grandeur of the original with its huge orchestral forces. Lasting up to 8 min 50 sec, depending on how fast you take some sections, this piece will require some stamina, but every player does get a break and the lead shifts between all four trombones.If you’re not familiar with the full orchestral version, then I suggest you listen to it before attempting this arrangement.Alternative tenor clef parts are included for the tenor trombones.

Psalm 1 by Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672), is taken from his collection of choral settings of several of the biblical Psalms of David, in which Schütz continued the polychoral tradition he had absorbed in Venice as a student of Giovanni Gabrieli. Schütz indicated in his preface to the Psalms, published in 1619, that due to limits on performance during the Thirty Years War, alternate instruments or voices could be employed as available. As Psalm 1 was composed for two choirs of voices, it might be an attractive option to double the parts in this version for brass. Also, the choirs might be placed some distance apart. The original version of Psalm I is for two four-part choirs, one of mixed voices and one of tenors and basses. (The original also calls for continuo accompaniment, but, as in similar works of Gabrieli, the choral parts sound complete in themselves.) Composer/arranger David Fetter (b. 1938) is a Trombone faculty member at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Also a conductor, his works are performed in concert, at festivals, and in educational settings in the U.S. and Europe and they have been recorded by leading soloists. Mr. Fetter is a former member of the Cleveland Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Radio/Telefis Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the U.S. Army Band, and other ensembles, where he performed for conductors who included George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, James Levine, Sergiu Comissiona, and David Zinman. At the Eastman School of Music he was a trombone student of Emory Remington and a member of the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Frederick Fennell. Trombone quartet arrangement for an intermediate to advanced quartet.All parts have a go at the tune and there's a scored solo section. Some notes in the bass trombone part can be taken down the octave, but I've deliberately written the part so it can be performed with straight trombones.The Preacher is based on the chords to Show Me The Way To Go Home, which Horace Silver often played at the end of his gigs. The producer of the recording, Alfred Lion, didn't want to release it because he considered it old fashioned. The band insisted and the tune became a jazz standard.Â
