This arrangement of the opening of Mussorgsky's best-known work is ideally suited as an opening or closing statement piece for a group of 4 early-intermediate trombones (1 bass trombone or tuba) or other bass clef instruments. It stays true to the original piece with adaptations in range for developing players and an adapted ending better suited for standalone performance. The estimated duration of the performance is 1m 30s.Pictures at an Exhibition is a suite of pieces for piano based on pictures by Mussorgsky's friend Viktor Hartmann, who died suddenly in 1873, aged 39. A memorial exhibition of Hartmann's works was staged in St. Petersburg the following year, and Mussorgsky's suite depicts walk around it, viewing 10 pictures in total. In addition to the pieces inspired by individual pictures, the suite contains several variations of the 'Promenade' theme, which depicts Mussorgsky roving through the exhibition, now leisurely, now briskly in order to come close to a picture that had attracted his attention, and at times sadly, thinking of his departed friend. (Vladimir Stasov). This arrangement presents the opening version of the 'Promenade', adapted to suit a group of 4 trombones (1 bass trombone or tuba) or similar group of bass clef instruments. The ranges have been reduced to accommodate young or developing players. The 1st part goes no higher than F4, and the bass part no lower than Bb1 (optionally A1). The melody is mainly in the 1st part, with passages in the 2nd and 3rd parts from time to time, but as the texture of Mussorgksy's composition is almost exclusively homophonic, all parts have equal importance. I have inserted additional dynamics and accents to aid phrasing, and adapted the ending to suit a standalone performance.

Kyrie - by Francesco Durante; Trombone Quartet – Intermediate – Digital Download. “Kyrieâ€, originally written for a four-part vocal ensemble by Francesco Durante, has now been transcribed, edited and arranged by Regis Bookshar, for a Trombone Quartet. It would be a welcomed addition to any music library. This short composition, which lasts less than two minutes, will provide many students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long phrases, and to help them to continue to develop good intonation because many of the phrases cadence on a unison note. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (7 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble’s extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quartet version of this composition for many church services, especially funerals, when we were asked to supply something more somber and introspective rather than the louder, more festive music which many people come to expect from a Trumpet Ensemble. Francesco Durante was an Italian composer who was born on March 31, 1684 at Frattamaggiore, in the Kingdom of Naples. At an early age he entered the Conservatorio dei poveri di Gesu Cristo, in Naples, where he received lessons from Gaetano Greco. Later he became a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio. He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant’Onofrio and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Nicola Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria de Loreto, also in Naples. He held this post for thirteen years, until his death on September 30, 1755. His fame as a teacher was considerable, and, unlike his Neapolitan contemporaries, who attracted international notice with their operas, Francesco Durante achieved recognition through his church music, along with some vocal chamber and instrumental works. His concern was not quantity. A complete collection of Durante’s works, consisting almost exclusively of sacred music, was presented by Gaspare Selveggi, a Neapolitan art collector and music theorist, to the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. The imperial library of Vienna also preserves a valuable collection of Durante’s manuscripts. The fact that Durante never composed for the stage brought him an exaggerated reputation as a composer of sacred music. He was considered one of the best church composers of his style and period. In his masses, requiems, litanies and Lamentations, he could provide strong expressive moments, as he does in this “Kyrieâ€. In addition to this arrangement for a Trombone Quartet, Regis Bookshar has also made other arrangements of this selection. There are Quartets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. Psalm 1 by Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672), is taken from his collection of choral settings of several of the biblical Psalms of David, in which Schütz continued the polychoral tradition he had absorbed in Venice as a student of Giovanni Gabrieli. Schütz indicated in his preface to the Psalms, published in 1619, that due to limits on performance during the Thirty Years War, alternate instruments or voices could be employed as available. As Psalm 1 was composed for two choirs of voices, it might be an attractive option to double the parts in this version for brass. Also, the choirs might be placed some distance apart. The original version of Psalm I is for two four-part choirs, one of mixed voices and one of tenors and basses. (The original also calls for continuo accompaniment, but, as in similar works of Gabrieli, the choral parts sound complete in themselves.) Composer/arranger David Fetter (b. 1938) is a Trombone faculty member at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Also a conductor, his works are performed in concert, at festivals, and in educational settings in the U.S. and Europe and they have been recorded by leading soloists. Mr. Fetter is a former member of the Cleveland Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Radio/Telefis Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the U.S. Army Band, and other ensembles, where he performed for conductors who included George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, James Levine, Sergiu Comissiona, and David Zinman. At the Eastman School of Music he was a trombone student of Emory Remington and a member of the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Frederick Fennell. Sound Visions 2 for 4 Trombones is a composition by the Dresden author, musicologist and composer Friedbert Streller (born December 21, 1931 in Hohburg near Wurzen; †December 24, 2017 in Dresden). In addition to his musicological activities and teaching at the Dresden Music Academy Carl Maria von Weber, Friedbert Streller also devoted himself to composition throughout his life. The piece, composed in 2011, was premiered posthumously at his memorial service at the Dresden Tolkewitz cemetery by Tobias Hasselt, of the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, Eckhard Wiegräbe and Uwe Gebel, of the MDR Symphony Orchestra, and Jörg Richter, of the Elbland Philharmonic. The making of separate parts was dispensed with. Due to the complex nature of the interplay of the individual parts, it makes sense to make music from the score. Although not expressly prescribed by the composer, the use of an alto trombone is strongly recommended for performing the 1st part! It is designed to teach as well as entertain. Each part is featured at various times, thus promoting strength throughout the section. NOTE: Audio sample clip begins at Letter A. Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955716). This trombone quartet arrangement of Hector Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique contains all the well-known themes of the full orchestral symphony. The beginning is identical with the original, but then proceeds immediately to the March to the Scaffold of the fourth movement. The famous idée fixe of the symphony is first heard at measure 72, and this is followed by other themes from the first movement. The adagio at measure 164 re-creates the pastoral duet of the symphony’s third movement. As indicated on the charts, the first trombone should play this section offstage (as for the oboist in the original), while the others remain on stage. If this is not possible, then the first trombone should play this section muted. This very reflective interlude is followed by my personal favorite, the wondrously jolly waltz from the symphony’s second movement. This is followed by the Witches’ Round Dance, a sort of fugue, which leads to the dies irae – played in four octaves here, with a high Eflat to test your first trombonist! The idée fixe is stated once again before the arrangement concludes in the same way as the original symphony.This is a light-hearted arrangement that is not intended to re-create exactly the grandeur of the original with its huge orchestral forces. Lasting up to 8 min 50 sec, depending on how fast you take some sections, this piece will require some stamina, but every player does get a break and the lead shifts between all four trombones.If you’re not familiar with the full orchestral version, then I suggest you listen to it before attempting this arrangement.Alternative tenor clef parts are included for the tenor trombones.
