These TWO SUITES were composed in response to a request form Heini Schneebeli, the musical director of ‘TROMBONANZA 2017’. Santa Fe in Argentina is the backdrop for this exciting annual event involving many hundreds of student and professional players.
The FIRST SUITE has three movements and is intended for a trio of younger tenor trombonists working with a teacher on bass trombone who will add richness and depth to the ensemble sound.
It is my hope that this piece will encourage, entertain and challenge student players and provide useful concert material for use in the promotion of this unique and versatile instrument.

The famous idée fixe of the symphony is first heard at measure 72, and this is followed by other themes from the first movement. The adagio at measure 164 re-creates the pastoral duet of the symphony’s third movement. As indicated on the charts, the first trombone should play this section offstage (as for the oboist in the original), while the others remain on stage. If this is not possible, then the first trombone should play this section muted. This very reflective interlude is followed by my personal favorite, the wondrously jolly waltz from the symphony’s second movement. This is followed by the Witches’ Round Dance, a sort of fugue, which leads to the dies irae – played in four octaves here, with a high Eflat to test your first trombonist! The idée fixe is stated once again before the arrangement concludes in the same way as the original symphony.This is a light-hearted arrangement that is not intended to re-create exactly the grandeur of the original with its huge orchestral forces. Lasting up to 8 min 50 sec, depending on how fast you take some sections, this piece will require some stamina, but every player does get a break and the lead shifts between all four trombones.If you’re not familiar with the full orchestral version, then I suggest you listen to it before attempting this arrangement.Alternative tenor clef parts are included for the tenor trombones.

This arrangement of the opening of Mussorgsky's best-known work is ideally suited as an opening or closing statement piece for a group of 4 early-intermediate trombones (1 bass trombone or tuba) or other bass clef instruments. It stays true to the original piece with adaptations in range for developing players and an adapted ending better suited for standalone performance. The estimated duration of the performance is 1m 30s.Pictures at an Exhibition is a suite of pieces for piano based on pictures by Mussorgsky's friend Viktor Hartmann, who died suddenly in 1873, aged 39. A memorial exhibition of Hartmann's works was staged in St. Petersburg the following year, and Mussorgsky's suite depicts walk around it, viewing 10 pictures in total. In addition to the pieces inspired by individual pictures, the suite contains several variations of the 'Promenade' theme, which depicts Mussorgsky roving through the exhibition, now leisurely, now briskly in order to come close to a picture that had attracted his attention, and at times sadly, thinking of his departed friend. (Vladimir Stasov). This arrangement presents the opening version of the 'Promenade', adapted to suit a group of 4 trombones (1 bass trombone or tuba) or similar group of bass clef instruments. The ranges have been reduced to accommodate young or developing players. The 1st part goes no higher than F4, and the bass part no lower than Bb1 (optionally A1). The melody is mainly in the 1st part, with passages in the 2nd and 3rd parts from time to time, but as the texture of Mussorgksy's composition is almost exclusively homophonic, all parts have equal importance. I have inserted additional dynamics and accents to aid phrasing, and adapted the ending to suit a standalone performance.
