Young Bruckner composed the Missa Brevis WAB 146 for mixed a cappella choir (also known as the Kronstorfer Messe) in 1843 while working as a teaching assistant in the town of Kronstorf. The Mass, to be sung during Lent consists of four movements: 1. Kyrie - Adagio 2. Sanctus - Adagio 3. Benedictus - Andante 4. Agnus Dei - Adagio The work is reminiscent of the style of Palestrina and exists without a Gloria or Credo. Ralph Sauer has beautifully arranged this 5-minute work for 4-part Trombone ensemble. This arrangement of the opening of Mussorgsky's best-known work is ideally suited as an opening or closing statement piece for a group of 4 early-intermediate trombones (1 bass trombone or tuba) or other bass clef instruments. It stays true to the original piece with adaptations in range for developing players and an adapted ending better suited for standalone performance. The estimated duration of the performance is 1m 30s.Pictures at an Exhibition is a suite of pieces for piano based on pictures by Mussorgsky's friend Viktor Hartmann, who died suddenly in 1873, aged 39. A memorial exhibition of Hartmann's works was staged in St. Petersburg the following year, and Mussorgsky's suite depicts walk around it, viewing 10 pictures in total. In addition to the pieces inspired by individual pictures, the suite contains several variations of the 'Promenade' theme, which depicts Mussorgsky roving through the exhibition, now leisurely, now briskly in order to come close to a picture that had attracted his attention, and at times sadly, thinking of his departed friend. (Vladimir Stasov). This arrangement presents the opening version of the 'Promenade', adapted to suit a group of 4 trombones (1 bass trombone or tuba) or similar group of bass clef instruments. The ranges have been reduced to accommodate young or developing players. The 1st part goes no higher than F4, and the bass part no lower than Bb1 (optionally A1). The melody is mainly in the 1st part, with passages in the 2nd and 3rd parts from time to time, but as the texture of Mussorgksy's composition is almost exclusively homophonic, all parts have equal importance. I have inserted additional dynamics and accents to aid phrasing, and adapted the ending to suit a standalone performance.

Beethoven's Turkish March (Op. 113) is the 4th movement of the operatic work: The Ruins of Athens, a set of incidental pieces written in 1812 by Ludwig van Beethoven, where the melody was originally written in 1809 as Theme with Six Variations for Piano, Op. 76. The work was written to accompany the play of the same name by August von Kotzebue, for the dedication of a new theater in Pest. Perhaps the best known part of the composition is the Marcia alla turca, In Latin America, this movement became known in Jean-Jacques Perrey's version (who titled it The Elephant never Forgets) since it was used as the opening theme of the successful Mexican TV comedy El Chavo del Ocho. The opening and the turkish march are often performed separately, and the other pieces in this set are not often heard.

These TWO SUITES were composed in response to a request form Heini Schneebeli, the musical director of ‘TROMBONANZA 2017’. Santa Fe in Argentina is the backdrop for this exciting annual event involving many hundreds of student and professional players.
The FIRST SUITE has three movements and is intended for a trio of younger tenor trombonists working with a teacher on bass trombone who will add richness and depth to the ensemble sound.
It is my hope that this piece will encourage, entertain and challenge student players and provide useful concert material for use in the promotion of this unique and versatile instrument.
