Published by Clive Lane (A0.1470166). ‘Lachrimæ or Seven Tears figured in Seven passionate pavans, with divers other pavans, galliards and allemands, set forth for the lute, viols, or violons, in five parts’is a collection of instrumental music composed by John Dowland and published in 1604. Apart from the sheer quality of the music, it is notable as the first publication of English music scored specifically for strings and for lute, and the first to have used the table layout for consort music.There are seven Lachrimae pavans, which are variations on the theme that Dowland had already made famous as a lute solo and a song (“Flow my tears”).The “divers other” compositions are: two almans (“almands”), nine lively galliards (“galiards”), two sombre pavans, and a “funerall.” There are 21 pieces in all and I have divided them into three books, retaining the original ordering of the pieces.This is Book Three - five galliards and two almans:1. This is a fun piece that your ensemble is sure to enjoy. This arrangement has been carefully transcribed and arranged in the original key to be performed by at least 2 guitars and 1 bass.

I have provided you with both ‘notation’ and ‘notation with tablature’ parts so you have the choice to distribute the version appropriate to your needs or the performers’ reading abilities.

Four themes (Main Theme • Underworld Theme • Underwater Theme • Starman Theme) are included in this arrangement in a variety of time signatures (4/4, 3/4, and 6/8). The original tempos are indicated although you could vary the tempo to suit your ensemble’s skill level. This is a great piece for teaching 16th note (semiquaver) rhythmic groupings and triplets. Rehearsal letters have been used to aid with rehearsals as a number of sections are repeated throughout the piece.

In larger ensembles it might be appropriate to ask some performers to create a percussive accompaniment on their guitars, or to recreate the 8-bit effects from the game on electric guitars (there are some great examples on YouTube).
