I have divided the thick original piano chords into an Instrumental Quintet. When playing this song use your ears to make sure every note of the chord is equally blended and balanced amongst all instruments in your ensemble. The final product is a clean, pleasant recital piece that is not too difficult but sounds rich and more advanced.

I must confess that this is one of my favorite piano works to play and I've always thought that it would make a great piece for small ensemble. This arrangement for two altos, two tenors and baritone saxophone keeps largely to the original voicing and style, with the melodic elements flowing mostly between the alto saxophones and tenor saxophone. Performance notes suggest placing the alto saxes at opposite ends of the ensemble to make the most of the stereo or antiphonal effect from the melody sweeping back and forth. Players of advanced intermediate standard (about grade 5+ ABRSM) will be able to produce a convincing concert or recital performance.

It is sympathetic to the original music and should be easily accessible for intermediate to advanced players. There is also an optional percussion part on Timpani (Bb and F) that can easily be played on old fashioned hand tuned instruments, and will lend a bit more gravitas to any performance. The piece is very musically satisfying to play and will sit well on any concert or recital programme. The duration of the piece is about 4:50 minutes. The PDF is 24 pages long (A4 portrait) containing a full score and parts. Printing guidance - Score (pages1-13 print A4 double sided), all parts p14-24 (with the exception of Timpani p24) are designed to fit 2 x A4 pages on A3). It has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960's and is performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in North America. Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions. Some critics have called it astonishingly rich in detailed inspiration and from beginning to end, beautiful, melodious, original and characteristic. The ballet's first complete performance outside Russia took place in England in 1934. The first complete United States performance was on December 24, 1944, by the San Francisco Ballet. It was such an enormous success that the San Francisco Ballet has presented The Nutcracker every Christmas Eve and throughout the winter season, debuting new productions in 1944, 1954, 1967 and 2004. In Salt Lake City, it has been performed every year since 1963. The New York City Ballet gave its first annual performance in 1954. In addition to annual live stagings of the work, many productions have also been televised or released on home video.The Nutcracker continues to be one of Tchaikovsky's most popular compositions and contains some of his most memorable works. Tchaikovsky made a selection of eight of the numbers from the ballet before the ballet's December 1892 premiere, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, and is intended for concert performance. The suite was first performed, under the composer's direction, on March 19, 1892.
