It has been covered by many jazz and blues artists. The first recording, by Nat King Cole in 1953, achieved some popularity but was not among that year's top 20 songs. It was Bobby Darin's version in his 1959 album That's All that introduced the song to a wider audience. The song is part of the Great American Songbook, and Alec Wilder included it in his book American Popular Song:.

It was their 13th charting hit in the United States, and their second number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It features a Lyricon solo by saxophonist Tom Scott, though Captain mimed to this part on a descant recorder in the promotional video. Do That to Me One More Time was a comeback for the duo, but they failed to achieve further success on Casablanca and their contract was not renewed. One of the most popular explanations of the origins of this tune is from Joe’s brother, Séamus. According to him, the two brothers heard the tune in County Clare being played on a ‘battered old concertina’. Later that night, the two brothers recreated the tune tune as best they could, ‘staying up through the night working and worrying the remembered fragments until finally the reel took shape’. However, instead of 32 bars, it has 64, plus an 8-bar tag. The tag is often dropped when the song is performed. The tune, like many of Porter's, shifts between a major and minor feeling. The A section is in the key of B-flat minor before modulating to B-flat major and back. When the song came out in 1930, a newspaper labelled it as 'in bad taste'; radio stations avoided broadcasting it. Today it is a jazz standard.

It was introduced in the film A Date With Judy when it was sung by Jane Powell in the opening scene with the school orchestra and is later sung in the film by Elizabeth Taylor (dubbed by Jean McLaren) and in the finale in an ensemble]. Beverly Kenney recorded It's a Most Unusual Day in 1957 for her album Beverly Kenney sings for Playboys which is featured in a Lincoln automobile commercial for television as of late 2021. The original arrangement was in 3/4 time. This is a swing version.

In the film, it is heard during the opening credits and later sung by Art Jarrett and chorus, and by Ann Sothern. The major hit at the time of introduction was by Eddy Duchin (vocal by Lew Sherwood). It was originally written in C major with a Moderately Bright tempo marking. As a jazz standard, it is usually played with a medium swing beat.
