The origin of the idea of a yellow ribbon as remembrance may have been the 19th-century practice that some women allegedly had of wearing a yellow ribbon in their hair to signify their devotion to a husband or sweetheart serving in the U.S. Cavalry. The song 'Round Her Neck She Wears a Yeller Ribbon, tracing back centuries but copyrighted by George A. Norton in 1917, and later inspiring the John Wayne movie She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, is a reference to this. The symbol of a yellow ribbon became widely known in civilian life in the 1970s as a reminder that an absent loved one, either in the military or in jail, would be welcomed home on their return. In 2008, Billboard ranked the song as the 37th biggest song of all time in its issue celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Hot 100.

Thanks, John. English singer Joe Cocker released a version of the song on his album I Can Stand a Little Rain. Cocker's version was released as a single in November 1974. It became Cocker's highest-charting solo hit, peaking at number five on the United States' Billboard Hot 100. Billy Preston wrote You Are So Beautiful with one of his regular collaborators, Bruce Fisher. Preston's inspiration was his mother, who worked as a stage actress. According to his friend Sam Moore (who had assumed it was a standard love song), Preston was appalled to learn that Moore was using the song as a means to attract young women each time he sang it in concert. In Moore's description, Preston told him: That song's about my mother!.

Stand by Your Man is a song recorded by American country music artist Tammy Wynette, co-written by Wynette and Billy Sherrill. It was released on September 20, 1968, as the first single and title track from the album Stand by Your Man. It proved to be the most successful record of Wynette's career, and is one of the most familiar songs in country music. The song was placed at number one on CMT's list of the Top 100 Country Music Songs. The song received some criticism during the late 1960s-early 1970s women's liberation movement, as feminist groups deemed it to be too conservative, while, for others, the song made Wynette a spokeswoman for working-class housewives experiencing marital disappointments and changing gender roles in the late 1960s. However, Wynette herself said that she had not intended any social or political slant to it. The Navy Hymn, also known as “Eternal Father, Strong to Saveâ€, holds a special place in the hearts of seafaring men and women, particularly in the American Navy and the royal navies of the British Commonwealth. In1879: Rear Admiral Charles Jackson Train, a Naval Academy graduate, was stationed at the Academy in charge of the Midshipman Choir. He initiated the practice of concluding each Sunday’s Divine Services with the singing of the first verse of this hymn. Thus, it became a cherished tradition at the Naval Academy and eventually throughout the entire Navy.
