It was recorded as a single by Frankie Valli. The song was among his biggest hits, earning a gold record and reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a week, stuck behind Windy by the Association. The song is a staple of television and film soundtracks, even being featured as part of the plot of some films, such as when the lead characters sing or arrange their own version of the song. The Valli version was also used by NASA as a wake-up song on the STS-126 Space Shuttle mission, to celebrate the wedding anniversary of astronaut Christopher Ferguson, one of the mission's crew members.

Richard and Karen were immediately taken with this song and agreed that it should be the follow-up to their previous hits. The Miles Davis Quintet featured tenor saxophone player John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The song became a Miles Davis specialty and it appears on several live session recordings and compilations in different versions. The tune was taken up and performed by countless jazz musicians and is still a favorite in jam sessions.

Listening back, it seems I was creating a nod to Chick Corea's Humpty Dumpty, but at the time I wasn't consciously thinking about Chick's masterpiece. ​ The title refers to the day (the seventh sunrise of the week) as well as a play on words referencing the mythological seventh son trope. ​ Gerald Clayton's genius is apparent here, as the tune is extraordinarily hard to play and he had only a short time to learn it.
