Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576904). Instrumental arrangement of my classical-folk crossover setting of Prévert's poem Pour faire le portrait d'un oiseau (To paint the portrait of a bird). Prévert indicates that you can never capture the real essence of a bird. You can paint a cage, a tree branch for it to sing on, but you have to wait for the actual bird itself to enter your painting - only then can you sign your painting, using a feather from that bird. The music has a Dorian feel - ie with a minor third and seventh but often with a raised sixth - (in this case F#s in an otherwise A minor context). I have provided full score and separate parts and also the melody instrument part with chord names, to enable the guitarist to read along with the melody instrument player and opt for interpretations other than the notated version (eg strumming, rasgueado etc). Published by Luis Cardoso (A0.934366). Imaginary beings 3 come from a subject that fascinates me, especially after reading Jorge Luis Borges's Book of Imaginary Beings. I decided to dedicate some of my compositions to this issue. This is the third composition with that title and only includes Portuguese imaginary beings: 1 - OLHAPIM - Very small entity, a sort of ghost or goblin. It has four eyes, two forward and two backward, to see all around; 2 - JANA - Spirit who makes clothes for the night if you let cake for him. 3 - TRASGO - Imaginary being of small stature, which uses red cap and possesses supernatural powers. This work was requested to be premiered by Wesley Ferreira. Was composed between January and April 2012.

This was originally a song, which I wrote back in my tender years (also available on this site for alto and guitar), but it also works equally well as an instrumental piece. I have therefore also provided versions on this site for guitar with: flute alto saxophone French horn English horn (cor anglais) clarinet oboe violin. After a gentle introductory major chord arpeggio, the tension of the piece comes into play from the third bar where the melody line holds and repeats an augmented 4th suspension above the guitar. This note then returns as the arpeggio chords change underneath to reveal it as a minor third of a chord related by three degrees of separation from the original - C major to E flat minor. The harmonies and melody continue to sway in their relations in a curious and yet logical progression. I have provided score and parts and also a separate version of the guitar part which provides chord names and fretboard symbols; this would make it useful for educational purposes. The sound sample is an electronic preview.

IF (David Gates/Bread) Bb CLARINET and GUITAR DUETFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This simple but charming melody has a guitar accompaniment that uses a clever mixture of stopped and open strings to create a campanella effect. Many of the arrangements that are out there don’t have same notes as the original, and therefore some of the cleverness and simplicity of the original gets lost.This arrangement uses the same shapes as the original, and there’s guitar and tablature as well guitar notation only so that you can easily see that almost all the measures in the music have the same right hand fingering, despite the mix of open and stopped strings making the score look much more complex than it actually is!The original key makes for undue complexity in the clarinet part, so I have arranged the piece to be played by the guitar with a Capo on fret one, so that all the clever shapes can be retained, and the piece moved from 5 sharps in the Clarinet to no sharps. In both the score and the tablature the fingering and positions are marked relative to the Capo, so fret 5 means 5 frets up from the Capo (actually fret 6 on the guitar).I’ve produced two clarinet parts - one sits almost entirely in the chalumeau register, and one sits almost entirely in the clarion register. The span of the piece means there always has to be places where the clarinettist is crossing the break but these are few and far between, making the piece accessible to players from early intermediate upwards.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!
