The Easter Bonnet Bop is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. The origins of the word Bop lie in the scat language of the ‘40s; Bop quickly became associated with the fast Bebop jazz of the period as musicians vocalised the offbeat rhythms of their angular melodies. Later in the ‘50s when Rockabilly and Rock’n’Roll first appeared, Bop was used to describe both the dance moves and the dance venues themselves. This version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Bassoon. The words and music of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot are credited to Wallis Willis, a Native American freedman from Oklahoma. A local minister transcribed the song in 1865 and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite. In recent times Swing Low, Sweet Chariot has been adopted by the Civil Rights movement on one hand, and the England rugby team on the other. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is simply arranged in keys and range best suited to the instruments. The hymn is played three and a half times, once as a ballad, then twice in a slow rock style, before returning to the ballad at the end. The Tulip Ch’Boogie is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. Boogie originally referred to the piano style found in Southern State bars where the driving swung bass-line, often double in octaves, cut through the noise. These bass-line patterns were adapted by Big Bands in the ‘30s, and later by Jump bands like that of Louis Jordan. Later still Boogie was quickly incorporated into Rockabilly and Rock’n’Roll. The Tulip Ch’Boogie is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo and syncopated rhythms and accidentals. This beautiful version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Bassoon. The Londonderry Air was first collected and notated in the mid-nineteenth century in County Londonderry in the North of Ireland, however, the origins of the melody remain unknown. In 1913 the English writer Frederic Weatherley set his poem Danny Boy to the melody. There are many other settings of the Londonderry Air, with various lyrics and in musical styles from orchestral to brass band to jazz, but Danny Boy remains the best known.Londonderry Air is simply arranged in accessible keys and over a range best suited to the instruments. The melody is played twice with a key change and different accompaniment on the second verse and is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above.
