This is a transcription for trombone ensemble of the complete William Tell Overture, written by Gioacchino Rossini, dedicated to the Szeged Trombone Ensemble (SETREN) and further arranged for the Eastman Trombone Choir. In reimagining the work for trombone octet, American composer P. F. Strohm has kept the piece in the original orchestral keys, and retained all the flourish and drama of the original work. The opening Dawn and Storm, the lovely Pastorale, and the touchstone Finale are all there. This tour de force work comes in two different versions, one for eight players (as arranged for SETREN), and this one for large ensembles of 16 or more players (as arranged for the Eastman Trombone Choir). Both versions have eight parts, and are intended for trombone ensembles with the highest levels of technique and musicianship. Advanced level of difficulty, with a performance time of 11:45. Published by James Haynor (A0.1450502). One of the few early works of Holst to survive his scrupulous self-criticism is an unassuming setting of the Ave Maria for eight-part female chorus. Completed in 1900, shortly after he abruptly left the Royal College of Music, the composition is dedicated to the memory of his mother, Clara Lediard Holst, who died when he was a child.Scored here for Trombone Octet, “ Ave Maria “ is a lovely setting for a haunting rendition of a familiar theme. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792083). Bach's Fantasia in G BWV 572 was most likely composed before 1712 and was originally for Organ. It survives thanks to his students who transcribed many of his works during the years before 1723. The original work is in three movements, however in this setting Mr. Sauer has used the Grave central movement which is slow, dense and serious. In this work Bach departs from his previous style of writing music that is interchangeable between the Organ and Harpsichord. Mr. Sauer has done a masterful job of scoring this 5 voice work for an eight-part Trombone Ensemble of moderately advanced performers.

The movements are: Les Marionnettes (The Puppets), Chanson du Chasseur (The Hunter's Song), Petites Litanies de Jesus (The Little Litanies of Jesus), Chanson de L'Escarpolette (Song of the Swing), Berceuse de la Poupeé (Lullaby for a Doll). Brian McDonie has beautifully arranged the five contrasting movements to comprise a suite for 8-part Trombone ensemble of moderately advanced performers.

Wilborn: Tsunami, for eight trombones, is designed to capture some of the energy and drama of a tsunami wave speeding towards a coastline. The opening musical themes are powerful and bold. These melodies are accompanied by pulsating and aggressive rhythms. After a while, the tension of the music subsides as a calm serene sound of Polynesian music emerges. Here the joyful entertaining atmosphere is a total contrast to the previous themes. The scene captures a moment of frivolity and images of participants who are totally unaware of impending danger. But that moment is brief as the tsunami music abruptly returns. The work concludes by capturing the image of the powerful tsunami wave racing for the coastline. At this point, a tsunami siren blares, and the music builds with great intensity. Upon hearing unexpected silence followed by a loud minor chord, it becomes clear that the massive wave has hit the coast. The destruction is done and the dreadful event is over. All seems well until the siren again sounds and the infamous opening tsunami music returns. This 8-minute work is appropriate for moderately advanced performers. The range is moderate and all the parts are in bass clef.
