Cascades is a three-movement composition for flute choir that represents both the waterfall definition of the word and the mountain range in the Pacific Northwest. The first movement represents Multnomah Falls, the tallest waterfall in Oregon. It drops 635 feet in two tiers. The music has cascading musical figures as well as sense of power and beauty. Mt. Hood is the inspiration for second movement. Standing at 11,249 feet above sea level, this majestic mountain is dramatically visible from the valley floor and is snow covered most of the year. The music of this movement depicts the rising from the valley floor with its low to high orchestration. The almost symmetrical shape is represented by descending lines after the two climaxes.The third movement is a reminder of the relatively youngness of the Cascade mountain range. In 1980, Mt. St. Helens erupted, causing catastrophic damage to the surrounding area and loss of lives. What remains of this former symmetrical mountain is a large crater as a reminder of the volatile nature of the Cascade Range. The music of this movement is filled with tension, from the seismic tremors of the first part to the eruption itself in the second part. A final cascade, this time depicting lava flow rather than a waterfall, brings both the movement and the composition to a close.

Published by JMS Composer (A0.749400). Petrichor is the scientific name given to the earthy smell of rain coming into contact with the ground. The work starts with the image of the rain just beginning to occur, with finger snaps, leg slaps, and the sound of palms rubbing together simulating the rain fall. The music starts at a slow tempo and increases over the length of the piece as the downpour accelerates. By the end, one might even imagine walking out onto a porch to enjoy watching the rain continue to fall, as it offers up even a moment of peace.From a rehearsal standpoint, Petrichor is not technically demanding. It focuses on the patterns that occur during rainfall, using them to help build towards the exciting conclusion. Working each pattern independently before bringing them together is very helpful, as it will help lock in the mix of rhythms. The opening does not need to feel rushed and should be allowed to breathe, and each increase in the tempo should not be telegraphed, but should flow from the previous tempo. The ending combines straight eighths and sixteenths with a running triplet pattern between them; the triplet pattern should feel like it sits on top of everything else, almost floating along like a cloud.This was a pleasure to compose, and I hope you enjoy rehearsing and performing Petrichor.

The first two sections are then heard again before a modulation takes place to give the piece a final lift before the end. The piece concludes quietly with a snippet of the opening motif. I have set it to intermediate level but the whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. The music would be a great addition to any repertoire as a happy piece, programmatic with a world/travelling theme in mind. Full score 16 pages-parts 4 pages. 4 mins 30 in length. (Other flute choir versions are also available) It is a descriptive exciting piece, and the intention was to make it a dramatic and mysterious in style- with a film -like storyline flowing through it. It has a calm intro going into a heavily syncopated driving 4 as the main theme punctuated by a heavy accented ostinato figure to add tension. The middle section is calmer and more relaxed where elements of the 1st theme appear in fragmented form. The intro returns once again before returning to the main theme which has slight modifications-extra accents etc, and the piece ends with the recurring stabs heard earlier before flourishing out.The ranges of the flutes are between one and a half octaves and 2 octaves depending on the part. Set at intermediate level but the full score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability.It runs at4 Mins 35 in length. Ideal as a showpiece, contest/festival, concert etc or an additional piece for the repertoire.Price is for the full score and all parts.

It would be a lovely addition to a wedding or similar ceremony, or for a quiet meditative moment in a religious service or concert program. The notes are easy, making this piece an excellent opportunity to focus on ensemble skills, such as balance and intonation. The work is only about a minute and a half in length. You might want to experiment with repeating the entire work, possibly with the top four voices (Flutes 1 & 2, alto, bass 1) up an octave.
