Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1485610 Composed by Domenico Cimarosa. Arranged by Nick Rossi. Classical. Score. 37 pages. Artaria Editions #1062676. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1485610). The four sonatas in this volume are a tantalising introduction to Artaria Editions' forthcoming publication of the complete keyboard sonatas of Domenico Cimarosa. (Sonata R20, R30, R25 and R27) The present edition attempts to present as accurately as possible the composer's intentions as transmitted in the Florentine MS with the exception of the grouping of the works into multi-movement cycles. Cimarosa's scant markings have been preserved throughout and, on occasion, applied to parallel passages. As in the original, the editor has placed the onus of responsibility for interpretation back on the performer although he has made occasional tempo suggestions where they are missing from the source. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment; editorial emendations with no authority from the source are placed within brackets. Nick Rossi Sadly Nick Rossi died before this edition went to press. In the course of its preparation we discussed many issues relating to the genesis of the sonatas and the risk the editor takes in presenting the works to the public with so little help in the matter of interpretation. I have tried to incorporate all of Nick's final thoughts on the sonatas in the edition that follows. Allan Badley.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1487257 Composed by Daniel Gottlob Turk. Arranged by Angélica Minero Escobar and Michael Tsalka. Classical. Score. 68 pages. Artaria Editions #1064231. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1487257). A critical edition of the forty-eight keyboard sonatas of the North German composer, performer, theorist, and pedagogue, Daniel Gottlob Türk has long been overdue. Today, Türk remains best known for his extensive and extremely detailed musical treatise, Klavierschule (1789), one of the most important sources for keyboard performance practice of the late eighteenth century. He is also recognized among piano teachers as the composer of a collection of extremely useful keyboard miniatures, the Kleine Handstucke fur angehende Klavierspieler, which systematically prepare beginning students for the many challenges of more advanced repertoire. The present editions begin to close the existing gap between Türk the theorist and pedagogue and Türk the composer by presenting two of a projected four volume series of his complete keyboard sonatas in critical editions prepared by Michael Tsalka and Angelica Minero Escobar.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1485608 Composed by Joseph Martin Kraus. Arranged by Bertil van Boer. Classical. Score. 52 pages. Artaria Editions #1062673. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1485608). The dates of the two sonatas is not known, although it is clear stylistically that the E major is a much more advanced work compositionally than the E-flat major. The latter also exists in a version as a sonata for violin and keyboard, which can be dated to Kraus's grand tour, having been written in Paris in 1785 and subsequently distributed by the Viennese publisher Johann Traeg. Since there are substantive differences in the two versions, it is impossible to say which came first, and Hans Eppstein has suggested that their may even have been a third, now lost original for fortepiano, since the extant solo keyboard version clearly represents a more advanced version. This cannot be proven, but it seems clear that the version presented here can be considered Kraus's last word in this tortuous compositional trail, probably receiving its final form for publication as part of the Due Sonata per il Forte Piano that hlstrm published about 1788 as one of the first editions stemming from his new privilege. Given that the E major work is one of considerable complexity and virtuosity, it is probable that this sonata at least was composed especially for the publication. In any case, hlstrm's edition is the earliest source of the works; a number of additional copies dating from about 1795 and later all can be traced back to it. That the composer himself was involved intimately with the edition can be seen by the unusual number of clear and precise markings and articulations. These have been accepted without comment or alteration. Occasional obvious wrong notes, the result of overlooked proof reading, have been tacitly corrected, and some of the slurrings have been regularized according to parallel passages where such do not appear to have been deliberately varied. It is the suggestion of the editor that the Adagio of the E majot sonata should be performed la C.P.E.Bach in a fantasia manner with considerable flexibility in terms of tempo and relative rhythm; to play it in a strict fashion obliviates the flow of the movement. Bertil van Boer.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1485607 Composed by Charles Dibdin, John Davy, Samuel Arnold, Stephen Storace, Thomas Augustine Arne, Thomas Linley, and William Shield. Arranged by Robert Hoskins. Classical. Score. 130 pages. Artaria Editions #1062672. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1485607). The period 1760-1800 was the golden age of English comic opera. Each of the London playhouses – Covent Garden, Drury Lane and the Little Theatre in the Haymarket – employed a resident composer who wrote for plays, pantomimes, three-act mainpiece operas, and one or two-act afterpieces. Successful premieres were followed up with the publication of piano reductions to satisfy the insatiable home entertainment market. This volume includes overtures by all of the major figures of the period, including Dibdin, Arne, Arnold, Shield, Storace and Davy, whose opera What a blunder! provides the title for this fascinating anthology.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1487271 Composed by Johann Baptist Wanhal. Arranged by Allan Badley. Classical. Score. 54 pages. Artaria Editions #1064246. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1487271). Like his younger compatriot Leopold Koželuh, Johann Baptist Wanhal derived a considerable part of his income from teaching, and his large output of keyboard music – which includes solos, chamber works with keyboard and instructional pieces – reflects this. Along with the usual sets of variations, dances and other small-scale works, he published sonatinas and progressive sonatas for young performers which reveal his experience as teacher and his gift of making the simplest music attractive as well as instructive. Wanhal’s output of solo keyboard music also includes far more complex and ambitious works, among them, several sets of pieces styled “Capriccio”. These works are in essence multi-movement sonatas, their capriciousness largely evident in their discursive first movements which include an element of modest tonal adventure. The works are very attractive, technically demanding yet well within the scope of the many fine amateur fortepianists in Vienna. Wanhal’s capriccios were eagerly sought after in other centres as well and were issued by publishers in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Offenbach am Main as well as in Vienna.

Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1487261). Clementi’s most musically fascinating piano works after the sonatas and Gradus ad Parnassum are undoubtedly his Capriccios, which are scattered across his entire output and span about forty years of his fifty year-long career. Collating these various Capriccios in a completed edition brings perspective and insight into Clementi’s evolving personality as improviser at the keyboard. In particular, the 2 Capriccios Op.47 of 1821, representative of Clementi’s late style, are large-scale, three-movement, grand-sonata-like works with substantial introductions, which challenge the very definition of the Capriccio as being typically short and free in form.Content: Foreword Critical Commentary Capriccio, Op.17 (1787, revised c.1802) Capriccio, Op.34 No.1 (1795, revised 1804) Capriccio, Op.34 No.2 (1795, revised 1804) ‘Scena Patetica’, Exercise 39 from Gradus ad Parnassum Op.44, Book 2 (1819) ‘Capriccio’, Exercise 80 from Gradus ad Parnassum Op.44, Book 3 (1826) Capriccio, Op.47 No.1 (1821) Capriccio, Op.47 No.2 (1821)

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1487252 Composed by Ignaz Josef Pleyel. Arranged by Allan Badley. Classical. Score. 11 pages. Artaria Editions #1064226. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1487252). Ignaz Pleyel (1757-1831) was at one time the most famous composer in the world. The popularity of his music eclipsed that of even his teacher Haydn and publishers vied to bring out his latest works as soon as they were finished. Some 2000 separate prints of Pleyel works had appeared by 1800 and his fame extended to every corner of Europe and as far afield as North America. Pleyel's career as a composer spanned less than thirty years with the majority of his works composed in the 1780s. He founded a successful publishing house in Paris in the mid-1790s and later began manufacturing keyboard instruments. With increasing demands on his time from his business concerns Pleyel's productivity as a composer dropped sharply and he ceased composing around 1805. Pleyel wrote very little solo keyboard music preferring instead to compose accompanied sonatas (i.e. piano trios). The attractive Rondeau in E flat (Benton 613), suitable for performance by either harp or fortepiano, illustrates many of Pleyel's strengths as a composer. It is attractive, technically resourceful and unerring in its sense of dramatic pace. Its principal theme is lively and distinctive, not too difficult technically and yet rewarding to play. The principal theme and the episodic material are elegantly constructed and reveal a sensitivity to the tone colour of the instrument. The minore section is dramatic and the octave doublings lend it a strength and power which contrasts effectively with the gentle rondeau theme. The final episode, the most technically challenging, adds a thrilling touch of drama to the closing phase of the piece.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1487260 Composed by Cesar Antonovich Cui. Arranged by Jeffrey Biegel. Classical. Score. 48 pages. Artaria Editions #1064234. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1487260). The Preludes by Cesar Cui are a fascinating set of pieces, with a distinctive character for each tonality. The pianistic challenges are equal to any other set composed before, during and after its time, and the musical attributes bring out the tender, passionate and soulful emotions of the human spirit. Beginning and ending in C Major, the structure of the set goes from minor to Major for each tonality, for example, after C major, e minor, then G Major, followed by b minor then D Major, etc. After reaching the most accidentals ('sharp's), the composer uses their enharmonic key signatures with most 'flat' minor and Major key signatures until he is back to one 'flat' and, then 'a minor' and finally, 'C Major' to conclude the set. The Preludes were brought to my attention in the 1980s from Charles Ervin, who frequented international piano competitions, and asked if I had ever encountered the opus.. From microfilm, I printed the Jurgenson edition, edited them, and recorded the first integral set of the 25 Preludes for the Marco Polo label, which was further re-printed for Naxos (8.555557). A military engineer, Cesar Cui was also a General, and composed under the tutelage of Mily Balakirev. Having French and Lithuanian parentage, he was not Russian, yet, because of his relationship with Balakirev, became known as one of the Russian Five (Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov). His music is often attributed to Robert Schumann, and more French in style than Russian. It is my hope that this set of compositions will become as well known as those by Chopin, Rachmaninov, Scriabin and the like, and performed more frequently by pianists of today and the future.Jeffrey Biegel.

Ries studied pianoforte (but not composition) with Beethoven in Vienna and the two men remained on cordial terms for the rest of their lives. In the last year of his life Ries co-wrote a book of Beethoven reminiscences that remain one of the most valuable sources of information about his life and character. The Pianoforte Sonatas, Op.1 were composed during the period 1804-1806 and published with a dedication to Beethoven. They are very impressive works, bold, powerful and imaginative, and worthy in every sense to be associated with the name of his illustrious teacher.

As in the original, the editor has placed the onus of responsibility for interpretation back on the performer although he has made occasional tempo suggestions where they are missing from the source. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment; editorial emendations with no authority from the source are placed within brackets. Nick Rossi.
