From my in-progress collection of intermediate and late-intermediate piano compositions in Impressionist styles, this is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in his minuets (like the middle movement of the Sonatine and the minuet from Le tombeau de Couperin). It means The Sunken Garden, and I'll explain why below.It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), large rolled chords, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music. All of these can be disorienting to students encountering Ravel's music for the first time, so students will benefit from Ravel-preparatory repertoire, like this piece, that introduces these techniques.Since most currently published collections of Impressionist-style pedagogical repertoire focus on Claude Debussy's language, this piece is a welcome addition to the student piano literature and will help bridge the gaps between standard teaching repertoire and pieces like Ravel's Sonatine, while also exposing students to a new, rich, and inviting tonal language that will inspire them to seek out more of Ravel's compositions.On a more personal level, this piece was inspired by the Sunken Garden, a former landmark on the Indiana University campus that sat across the street from the practice building in which I taught dozens of piano students, coached numerous singers, and learned piles of repertoire before moving away last year. The Jordan Hall greenhouse now sits on the former Sunken Garden site.Because the Wells Quad dorms are right next door, I hear this piece as a recollection of a social dance night that the dorms probably held frequently back when the Sunken Garden existed. Wells Quad served as a classroom/academic office complex for years after Jordan Hall was built in the 50s, but they are now back-converting the buildings into dorms again. (As of this writing, two of the buildings now serve as dorms, while the other two are still academic buildings. While I was pursuing my doctoral minor in composition, the composition professors' studios were almost all in Wells Quad's Sycamore Hall. They upgraded to the East Studio Building as soon as they could, though!).

Vignettes is a set of 5 short (2 or 3-page) late-intermediate piano pieces that introduce unique aspects of Maurice Ravel's piano writing that students tend to find challenging. Given that Ravel himself wrote very little at the intermediate level for solo piano (except the recently rediscovered Prelude in A minor), I saw a great need for appropriate Ravel-preparatory repertoire.Notes on the Pieces in Vignettes1. Réminiscences d’EspagneThis work is an homage to Maurice Ravel's Habañera-styled pieces. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: numerous hand and arm crossings, 3-against-4 polyrhythms as evident in the habañera, very high registers, dissonances like German 7th chords and diminished thirds, and Spanish-flavored modal writing, to name a few. This piece also recalls my time as a cruise ship duo pianist aboard the ms Maasdam, which visited five ports in Spain.2. Le jardin des papillons (The Butterfly Garden)Le jardin des papillons is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in pieces including the Sonatine, Le tombeau de Couperin, and others. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), whole tone sonorities, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music.3. Le jardin englouti (The Sunken Garden)Le jardin englouti is an homage to Maurice Ravel's minuets (like the middle movement of the Sonatine and the minuet from Le tombeau de Couperin). The Biology Building greenhouse now sits on the former Sunken Garden site.4. Point PeléePoint Pelée is an homage to Maurice Ravel's toccata-style movements, like the finale of the Sonatine or the toccata from Le tombeau de Couperin. This piece can be programmed with Le jardin des papillons and Le jardin englouti to form a three-movement suite that roughly corresponds to the Sonatine. This movement was inspired by Point Pelée National Park, in Ontario, Canada, a frequent roosting spot for monarch butterflies making the long migration from Canada to southern Mexico. In this piece I tried to capture the flutters of the roosting monarchs' wings as they'd settle into the trees at night and venture out across Lake Erie after resting. À la manière d'une PavaneÀ la manière d'une Pavane is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in his Pavane pour une infante défunte and the Pavane from the Mother Goose suite. It combines Baroque-reminiscent polyphony with the clarity and delicacy of articulation required more widely in the Ravel repertoire.

The combined message of these two Easter hymns intertwined together provides a powerful moment of introspection and meditation regarding the work of Christ on the cross and how we are to interface with that. It should be performed with great care and sensitivity, taking the time for expression and reverence. The opening verse eighth notes need to be played lightly and effortlessly. By way of contrast, the key change provides opportunity for a strong musical statement, followed by a transition back to a quieter final contemplation of Were you there when they crucified my Lord. The ending requires extreme delicacy and practice to get the timing with the sustain pedal, and with the soft pedal down, to play the chords as lightly as possible while still having every note sound.

The River Jordan is not in fact very deep, nor is it very wide. However, the longing to cross over it into camp ground in the promised land is very deep indeed! Based on the biblical story of Moses and the tribes of Israel wandering in the desert for forty years, this song is about exile and yearning for somewhere to belong. It applies to everyone, not just to the African-Americans who first sang this song, with their own history of heartache over so many centuries. Anyone who feels alienated by life and who is searching for inner peace is invited to respond to its soulfulness. Surprisingly - says the song - there are those who don't want to go to that gospel feast. But the song just continues its own search for the promised peace, convinced that the answer lies deep within us, perhaps across our own, personal deep river. The old African-American Spiritual Deep River is here set for piano solo in a relatively straightforward arrangement, based on the arranger's own barbershop quartet setting of the same song. Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862657). The Prelude in C# minor was the bane of Rachmaninoff's existence as a performer. Audiences could NOT get enough of it, and he could not bear to play it one more time! Such is Fame and Success. Well, we Normal Humans have had to look at the traditional setting of it, in two grand staves, with enough double-accidentals to blind a scribe, and try to emulate The Master from that pirate's treasure map. No longer. Here is a single-grand staff setting, with only the most minor modifications to accommodate the average hand, and spellings that show the true nature of the chords. The single best aspect of our setting here is the Total Elimination of the crossed-hand octaves throughout. When I realized these were only three or four-note triads, and not a pile of interlocking harmonies, I determined to make things clearer, for myself, and other players. The low notes all correspond to Rachmaninoff's bassline, except for one passage near the end. Only TWO octave doublings have been removed to make a smaller leap from the former lower grand staff to the upper. When I was a young student, this sort of music was baffling to my eyes, but not my ears. Now we can all see it and play it for what it is, an early masterwork, based on S.R.'s training in harmony from the Moscow Conservatory. A note can be the root, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and even 9th of some chord. They are all on display here, with a nice summation at the end, in quietude. MBB.

Kleio 4. Khronos. The NUMES collection contains: * Sonatina * Sonata * Toccata * Intermezzo * Postlude * Four Canticles without Words * Fantasia. Scores are typed elegantly and accurately. The notation, from the positioning of the notes, passing through the direction of the stems, and arriving at legatos that do not cross staves and measures, seeks to be clear and intuitive. The form is evidenced by the bar numbering placed at the beginning of the main phrases. And the use of double bars is restricted to section changes, not tonal changes as in older notations. Dynamics are not structuring and therefore are not prefixed. And each score is preceded by an epigraph that situates the general character of the music, whose tempo is indicated by the name of the Divinity.

Written in 1905 by Charles Gabriel and Civilla D, Martin, this song was sung by Ethel Waters and used in her biography. Whitney Houston made this song popular again in the 1976 movie Sparkle, in which the plot was inspired by the history of The Supremes singing trio, in the late 1950's-early 60's in Harlam, New York. Use lots of expression in the first verse and ending; more motion in the 2nd verse and chorus. Key of F Major, helpful fingering suggested. The LH begins with a simple ostinato pattern and a single melody line. In a later verse the RH uses 3-4 note chords and LH arpeggios. (To simplify the RH, leave off the lowest note of a 4 note chord, and the lower note of octaves.) The intro/interlude consists of 6th in the RH and creates a beautiful, haunting melody.
