C. Handy in the blues style and published in September 1914. It was one of the first blues songs to succeed as a pop song and remains a fundamental part of jazz musicians' repertoire. This arrangement is unique in that it is written as a jazz waltz; which Gershwin would later play on various piano rolls. He has been studying piano since the fifth grade of elementary school. Now he works as psychiatrist in Taiwan. Dr. Su began to experiment and compose music during the university period, and held a personal piano recital of the Liszt track (including B minor sonata) in the school's auditorium in May 2012. In 2015, he obtained a Taiwanese doctor's license after graduating from university. In 2016, the piano collection States of Mind published by him during the military service included 12 different ensembles of Concert Études. Later, he also published a collection of 12 other tonal piano concert Etudes - Wonders. Dr. Su began receiving psychiatry residency training programs at the Taoyuan Psychiatric Center in August 2017. Colorful, challenging piano solo traces an Ojibwe family’s harrowing journey by canoe down the Brule River and across Lake Superior to safety Canoe (2022) by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) For solo piano Duration 9:22 Difficulty 5 advanced Canoe (2022) by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP), commissioned by Dr. Joseph Choi for solo piano, tells a harrowing story through music of the composer’s Ojibwe ancestor, Wabegiah, and her three young children. Wabegiah grew up at Upper Lake St. Croix in Wisconsin, married the French trader Mr. Couture, and had three children. Mr. Couture died suddenly just as the tensions with the Sioux became quite threatening. To protect her children from being killed by the Sioux, she took them on the long journey in a birch bark canoe down the Brule River and along the coast of Lake Superior all the way to Sault Ste. Marie. As you would expect, much of the music represents water, but it also captures moments during their flight. Loud dissonant chords mark Mr. Couture’s death and Wabegiah’s grief. The unsettling fear motive in Locrian mode predominates as they begin to flee. As they head away from danger, the courage theme follows them downstream. In a dissonant conversation with an Ojibwe man on the Brule River, he refused to give the hungry travelers food, but told them to continue to the river’s mouth to find Wabegiah’s aunt and uncle. The restful and nourishing family time on the shores of Lake Superior allows for variations on the family theme, playful, sleepy, and reflecting on the coming of autumn. With the courage theme as the subject, a fugue tracks their difficult passage across Lake Superior to the safety of Sault Ste. Marie. Recounted by Eliza Morrison, a daughter from Wabegiah’s second marriage, this journey took place in the early 1830s. The three children were born in 1828, 1829, and 1830. The youngest of the children was Angelique, the composer’s great great grandmother.

Once again the influence of George Winston and Mannheim Steamroller can be heard as this prelude begins with a burst of joy and energy that does not subside, but only grows with each verse. The changing meters make this piece a challenge to play and requires a strong technique to handle some of the scale passages. This arrangement is a far cry from the original music of Mendelssohn, but the lyrics inspired me to create something full of vibrancy and passion to match the glorious news that the angels came to deliver! The first verse establishes the 5/4 meter heard throughout the prelude and is filled with the pealing of church bells in the right hand as they send forth the melody in octaves! Meanwhile, the left hand continues the broken chord pattern established in the opening. In the next verse, the left hand is now rising and falling, while the right is still playing the melody in octaves. Only now it is filling the spaces with eighth notes to match the left hand…essentially combining the two hands of the previous verse. For the final verse, the left hand takes on the orchestral role of brass and percussion with thunderous chords punctuating the rhythm of the melody in the right hand. There are moments of fireworks as the hands break free of the 5/4 meter for some wonderful, albeit brief, scales which increase the growing excitement. The piece concludes with a return of the rhythmic material from the opening as the hands work their way down the piano in arpeggiated fashion only to race back up the keyboard for a final flourish before a resounding Amen: Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Glory to the new-born King!

I first wrote a five-part vocal to be sung by the group Five By Design (of which I was a member) back in the late 1990s or early 2000s. Unfortunately, it never found its way in to our repertoire. It sat on my computer for quite a few years before I revised it to be sung as a trio with my brother, Kurt, and his wife, Lorie. I had written a vocal arrangement of the carol for us to sing at some Christmas concerts and a few years later, when putting this album together, I returned to the first chart and adapted it for piano solo. The meter of the song moves back and forth between 3/4 and 2/4 and conveys the joy and hopefulness of the opening lyrics: “He is born, the Divine Child, Play the oboe, resound the bagpipes. He is born, the Divine Child, Let us all sing of his arrival.†It is this combination of instruments that I tried to emulate in the introduction, with the bagpipes in the left hand and the oboes in the right. When the tune proper begins, there is a definite rhythmic vitality that is maintained throughout the prelude as it celebrates the long-awaited birth of Jesus as foretold by the prophets over 4,000 years ago. From start to finish, the influence of both George Winston and Mannheim Steamroller can be heard in the music.

The left hand stubbornly repeats the same four notes as the melody begins to weave its way above, searching for a place to rest that seems only all too elusive. The melody repeats, but is now joined by another voice which only adds to the feeling of despondency as it snakes around creating a melancholy harmony. The title refers to a house that has been forgotten to time and is slowly being covered by the encroaching forest. With no one around to witness the end of a home that once knew laughter, but now knows only sadness and decay, the piece ends with the sighing of the wind through the branches of the trees.

She was one of the earliest advocates and scholars on historically informed performance practices, and she made the first-ever recording of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations on the harpsichord.Landowska was born in Warsaw in 1879 and started playing the piano when she was four years old. As a child, she studied with Jan KleczyÅ?ski and then Aleksander Michalowski. Kleczynski noticed in her lessons that she had an affinity for older Baroque music, and he didn't want to impose his sensibilities onto the already apparent musical prodigy. Consequently, her mother decided that Kleczynski was too lenient of a teacher and sent her to study with the stricter Michalowski, who was a Chopin specialist. When she was 16 years old, Landowska moved to Berlin to study composition with Heinrich Urban, but was discouraged by the rigid curriculum. However, while in Berlin she composed songs and orchestral works, and she met her future husband, Henry Lew. In 1900, the young couple moved to Paris and got married. There she became associated with the Schola Cantorum, and was introduced to Vincent D'Indy, Albert Schweitzer, and other prominent performers and musicologists of the era.Throughout the next ten years, Landowska toured Europe and Russia, and dedicated herself to researching the authentic performance practices of older music. Her husband assisted her in this research, and they often utilized libraries that they encountered while touring. She concluded that it's more appropriate to play Baroque keyboard music on the harpsichord rather than on the piano. By 1909, Landowska and her husband published the book Musique Ancienne, which was the culmination of all of their research regarding the performance practices of Baroque music. She also started teaching harpsichord classes in 1913 at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin.Ten years later, Landowska made her debut in the United States, performing with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Stokowski. Also in 1923, she performed in the world premiere of Manuel de Falla's El retablo de maese Pedro, where she met Francis Poulenc and asked him to write a harpsichord concerto for her. She also commissioned a concerto from Falla in 1925, which would prove to be a modern masterpiece. In 1929, Landowska performed the premiere of Poulenc's Concert champêtre in Paris. By this time, she had settled in a town north of Paris, and was teaching from her school L'Ã?cole de Musique Ancienne, which she established in 1925. She offered private and group courses and an annual summer concert series that was very popular. Landowska taught and performed in this capacity until 1940, when she had to abandon the school, her extensive library, and her home because of World War II. With the assistance of her student Denise Restout, she escaped to Portugal and then sailed to the United States, and eventually settled in Lakeville, Connecticut. She continued to perform and teach in the U.S., and at the age of 70 she recorded the complete Well-Tempered Clavier, which was highly acclaimed. Landowska was 80 years old when she passed away in Lakeville in 1959.
